Izzy's Return
Izzy's Return
"He's your son?" Elena gasped, looking between Lucian and Lilith.
Lucian's face showed pain and shame. "Elena, I—"
Before he could finish, Victor threw something at Lilith. It burst in a flash of blue light. In the chaos, he grabbed Elena and Lucian, pulling them toward the back door.
"Run!" Victor shouted. "I'll hold them off!"
They burst out of the cabin into the cold night. Behind them, they heard crashes and yells as Victor fought the vampires. Elena's heart ached, knowing he might not live.
"This way!" Lucian pulled her into the thick woods. They ran faster than normal humans could, using their shared skills through their new blood bond.
I can explain about Lilith, Lucian's voice came into Elena's mind.
Not now! Elena thought back furiously. Just run!
The forest was dark and scary. Trees seemed to reach for them with their branches. Somewhere behind them, red eyes followed in the darkness.
Finally, they reached a small cave hidden behind rocks. Lucian moved a boulder away, revealing a narrow opening.
"In here," he whispered. "I prepared this hiding place weeks ago."
Elena crawled inside. The cave was small but dry. Lucian rolled the rock back, covering the entrance. Only a tiny crack let in moonlight.
"They won't find us here," Lucian said. "The cave walls block supernatural tracking."
Elena sat as far from him as possible in the small space. "You lied to me," she said, her voice shaking. "Again."
Lucian hung his head. "I didn't lie. I just... didn't tell you everything."
"That Lilith, the leader of the Shadow Council, is your mother?" Elena's blue fire flickered around her fingers. "That seems important!"
"I was going to tell you after the blood bond," Lucian said. "I thought you might not trust me if you knew."
"And I should trust you now?" Elena asked sadly.
Before Lucian could answer, they heard something outside the cave. Someone was moving the rocks. They both froze, ready to fight.
The rock moved just enough to make a small opening. A voice asked, "Elena? Are you in there?"
Elena's heart stopped. She knew that sound. "Izzy?"
A figure stumbled into the cave. In the dim light, Elena could see it was indeed Izzy - but she looked terrible. Her clothes were torn and bloody. Her face was bruised. She could barely stand.
"Thank god," Izzy whispered, then fell on the cave floor.
Elena rushed to her side, forgetting her anger at Lucian. Izzy was bleeding badly from a wound in her side.
"What happened to you?" Elena asked, helping Izzy sit up against the wall.
"Amara," Izzy said softly. "She found out I was helping you. She... she tried to kill me."
Lucian looked suspicious. "How did you find us?"
"I followed the vampires," Izzy explained, cringing in pain. "I saw them attack the cabin. I watched you escape." She looked at Elena with tears in her eyes. "I know I betrayed you. With Marcus, with everything. But Elena, when I learned what Amara really wanted to do to you... I couldn't be part of it anymore."
Elena felt confused. Part of her was still angry at Izzy's deception. But seeing her friend hurt made her heart soften.
"You need help," Elena said. She looked at the wound in Izzy's side. It was deep.
"I know you hate me," Izzy whispered. "But please... help me."
Elena remembers how she had healed Lucian's cut during training. Maybe she could heal Izzy too. She put her hands over the wound.
"This might hurt," she warned.
Elena closed her eyes and focused. Blue light glowed around her hands. She could feel her power flowing into Izzy's wound, knitting the skin back together.
Izzy gasped, then sighed with relief as the pain eased. "Thank you," she whispered.
When Elena finished, she felt tired but happy. The wound was fixed, though Izzy still looked weak.
"You need to rest," Elena told her.
Izzy nodded, then looked between Elena and Lucian. "What's going on? I feel something different between you two."
"We created a blood bond," Lucian explained. "We can share powers now."
"And Selene used it to find us," Elena added bitterly.
Izzy's eyes widened. "That's not all she's using it for," she said hurriedly. "Elena, that's why I came to warn you. Amara and Selene have a plan."
"What kind of plan?" Lucian asked.
"The red moon is tomorrow night," Izzy said. "They're going to use your blood bond to drain both your powers at once. They need the power of a daywalker witch and a royal vampire together."
"Royal vampire?" Elena looked at Lucian in confusion.
Lucian sighed. "Another thing I didn't tell you. Lilith isn't just the leader of the Shadow Council. She's the first vampire ever created. That makes me..."
"Vampire royalty," Izzy finished. "His blood is special, like yours."
Elena felt cheated all over again. "Any other secrets I should know?"
"There's more," Izzy said quickly. "I heard Amara talking to Selene. They don't just want your powers. They want to open something called the Blood Gate."
"The Blood Gate?" Lucian looked shocked. "That's just a legend."
"What is it?" Elena asked.
"A doorway between worlds," Lucian stated. "Stories say it can bring something ancient and powerful into our world."
"And they need our blood bond to open it," Elena realized.
Izzy nodded weakly. "They've been planning this for centuries. Everything - making you meet, creating the blood bond - it was all part of their plan."
Elena felt sick. She and Lucian had done exactly what the Shadow Council wanted.
"We need to break the bond," Elena said.
"We can't," Lucian answered. "Blood bonds can't be broken. But maybe we can use it against them."
Suddenly, Izzy gasped and grabbed Elena's arm. Her eyes turned totally black, like Selene's had in the temple.
"Izzy?" Elena tried to pull away, but Izzy's grip was too strong.
"I'm sorry," Izzy said, but her voice sounded strange - deeper, older. "I tried to fight her, but she's too strong."
"Selene," Lucian growled, moving to help Elena.
But before he could reach them, Izzy's other hand shot out, pushing something small and sharp into Elena's neck. Elena felt a sting, then numbness spreading through her body.
"What did you do?" Elena asked, her voice slurring as she started to feel sleepy.
"Tracking dust," Izzy said, her eyes clearing as she fought for control. "Elena, run! I can't stop her!"
Lucian pulled Elena away from Izzy, but it was too late. Outside the cave, they heard howls and cries as vampires closed in.
"They found us," Lucian said. He tried to move the boulder to leave, but it wouldn't budge. Someone or something was keeping it in place from outside.
"I'm so sorry," Izzy wept, back to herself now. "I didn't know she could control me like that."
Elena felt her power fading as the drug spread through her system. Through their link, she could feel Lucian trying to give her his power to fight it off.
The rock finally moved, but instead of vampires, they saw Victor. His face was bloody, but he was alive.
"Quick," he said. "I found another way out."
They followed him deeper into the cave, supporting Elena between them. The passage twisted and turned until they hit an underground river.
"We can follow this to safety," Victor said.
But as they reached the water's edge, Elena suddenly froze. Through the blood link, she felt a terrible cold spreading from Lucian.
She turned to look at him just as his eyes turned completely black - just like Izzy's had.
"Lucian?" she whispered.
He smiled, but it wasn't his smile anymore. "Blood calls to blood," he said in Lilith's voice. "Mother and son, forever linked."
Victor understood what was happening and tried to pull Elena away, but Lucian moved with vampire speed, grabbing her arm.
"The Blood Gate opens tomorrow night," Lilith said through Lucian. "And you, dear Elena, have just delivered yourself to us."
The last thing Elena saw before the darkness took her was Lucian's face, fighting against his mother's control, a single tear of blood running down his cheek.
