Training Montage
"Mom?" Elena whispered, her voice shaking. "How is this possible? You died. I saw your grave."
The woman who looked exactly like Elena's mother smiled softly. "There's much you don't know, sweetheart. Death isn't always final in our world."
Before Elena could run to her mother, Lucian grabbed her arm. "Wait," he warned. "This could be a trick."
Elena's mother nodded. "He's right to be careful. Ask me something only your real mother would know."
Elena's mind raced. "What did you call my stuffed rabbit when I was six?"
"Mr. Twitch," her mother answered without doubt. "Because his nose twitched when you squeezed him."
Tears filled Elena's eyes. This was really her mother! She rushed forward into her arms, feeling the same warm hug she'd missed for so many years.
"I have a safe place," her mother said, looking over Elena's shoulder at Lucian. "The mountain temple Lily saw. I've been living there since I escaped the Shadow Council."
"Escaped?" Lucian asked, still suspicious.
"They didn't kill me. They captured me to study my blood." She showed them scars on her arms. "I've been hiding, gathering strength. Now we must hurry. This forest isn't safe."
They followed Elena's mother through the dark woods. After hours of walking, they reached a secret cave behind a waterfall. Inside, stone steps led deep into the mountain.
At the bottom, they entered a large room lit with bright blue crystals. The walls were covered with the same symbols Elena had on her skin.
"This is the last temple of the daywalker witches," her mother explained. "Our ancestors built it thousands of years ago."
Elena touched the wall symbols. "They match my marks."
Her mother nodded. "Because they're part of you. And now, we must train you to use your power. The red moon is coming in seven days."
The next morning, Elena stood in the temple's center chamber. Her mother put crystals in a circle around her.
"Focus on the light inside you," her mother advised. "Feel it moving through your body to your hands."
Elena closed her eyes. She imagined the blue glow as a river running through her veins. When she opened her eyes, her hands were surrounded by blue flames that didn't burn.
"Good!" her mother said. "Now, direct it outward. Imagine a shield."
Elena pushed the energy forward. A wall of blue light formed in front of her. But seconds later, it flickered and vanished. She fell to her knees, tired.
"I can't hold it," she gasped.
"You'll get stronger," her mother promised. "Every day, a little more."
In another room, Lucian taught Elena how to fight.
"Vampires are fast, but predictable," he explained, circling her. "We always protect our hearts and necks."
He lunged suddenly. Elena dodged as her mother had taught her, using her smaller size to duck under his arm.
"Good!" Lucian said. "Now counter-attack."
Elena directed her energy into her hand and touched Lucian's arm. Blue light spread from her fingers. Lucian hissed as the light burned him slightly.
"Sorry!" Elena cried.
"Don't apologize," Lucian said with a rare smile. "That's exactly what you should do to an enemy."

Days passed. Elena trained from sunrise to sunset. Each morning, her mother taught her witch skills. Each afternoon, Lucian taught her fighting.
Her powers got stronger. She could hold her shield longer now. The blue fire didn't make her tired anymore. Once, when she was upset during practice, she accidentally flew three feet off the ground.
"You're learning faster than I did," her mother said proudly.
On the fifth day, Elena found she could heal. Lucian cut his arm during training. Without thinking, Elena put her hand over the wound. Blue light flowed from her fingers, and the cut closed completely.
"Your power is growing," her mother noted. "But be careful. Healing takes much energy."
That night, Elena heard Lucian and her mother talking in whispers.
"She's not ready," Lucian said. "The Council is too strong."
"She's stronger than you think," her mother argued. "And we're running out of time."

On the sixth day, Elena was practicing making her blue fire form different shapes when she felt a strange pain in her chest. She fell to her knees, gasping.
"What's happening?" she cried.
Her mother rushed to her side. "Your connection to the other daywalkers. Something's wrong."
Lucian burst into the room. "We've got trouble. I can sense vampires nearby."
Elena's mother looked scared. "They've found us. We need to move deeper into the temple."
They hurried through tight passages, going deeper into the mountain. They entered a huge chamber with a domed roof. Stars were drawn above them, surrounding a red moon.
"This is the Heart Chamber," her mother explained. "The most sacred room in the temple."
In the center stood a stone altar covered with old writing. Elena identified symbols matching her marks.
"What is this place for?" she asked.
Before her mother could answer, a familiar voice spoke from the shadows.
"It's where daywalker witches perform their most powerful magic."
Elena spun around. Amara stepped into the light, her black eyes sparkling. Behind her stood Victor, his face covered in cuts and bruises.
"I'm sorry, Elena," Victor said softly. "They followed me."
Elena raised her hands, blue fire appearing around her fingers. "Stay back!"
Amara laughed. "Your power has grown! Good. That will make the ritual even stronger."
"What do you want?" Elena asked.
"To help you understand your true purpose," Amara said. She pointed to the altar. "This is where your ancestors did something terrible. They cursed vampires to fear the sun."
Elena looked at her mother in confusion.
"It's true," her mother admitted. "Our ancestors created a spell that made vampires burn in sunlight. They believed it would protect humans."
"And now," Amara added, "with your blood and the power of the red moon, we can break that curse forever."
"Don't listen to her," Lucian warned. "There's more she's not telling you."
Amara smiled sweetly. "Like what? That your mother isn't who she claims to be?"
Elena felt cold suddenly. "What does that mean?"
Her mother's face hardened. "Ignore her lies, Elena."
"Am I lying?" Amara asked. She walked toward Elena's mother. "Show her who you really are."
Elena watched in horror as her mother's face started to change. Her features changed, becoming someone else entirely.
"Mom?" Elena whispered.
The woman's kind smile changed into a cruel grin. "I'm not your mother, child. Your mother is truly dead."
Elena stumbled backward. "Who are you?"
The woman's eyes turned black, just like Amara's.
"I am Selene," she said, her voice deeper now. "The eighth member of the Shadow Council. The one they don't talk about."
Elena's world fell around her. All this time, she'd been training with the enemy. Learning from someone who wanted to use her power. Revealing all her new powers.
"Where is my real mother?" Elena asked, blue fire swirling around her hands.
Selene laughed. "Ashes and dust, child. But soon, you'll join her."
The ground beneath them began to shake as Elena's power burst outward in her rage.
