Shadow Council
Shadow Council
Elena woke up with a gasp, her body hurting all over. She was lying on a soft bed in a room she didn't recognize. Warm sunlight streamed through tall windows, making dust dance in the air.
"You're awake," Lucian said from a chair beside her. His face was tired, with cuts that were slowly healing.
The memories came rushing back - the temple, Amara, the floor breaking open beneath them. Elena sat up quickly.
"What happened? Where are we?"
"Victor's safe house," Lucian stated. "We fell through the temple floor into underground tunnels. Victor helped us escape before the whole place collapsed."
Elena looked around the simple room. "And Amara?"
"Gone," Lucian said, his voice tight. "But not dead. Creatures like her are hard to kill."
Elena's blue marks had faded to thin silver lines on her skin. She touched them gently, remembering how they had flared with power in the temple.
"How long was I out?"
"Three days," Lucian answered. "You used a lot of power down there."
The door opened, and Victor walked in. He looked better than he had in the temple, but still weak. He held a tray with food and a steaming mug.
"You need to eat," he said, setting the tray beside her.
Elena took the mug and sipped. It was hot chocolate - just like her mother used to make. The familiar taste brought tears to her eyes.
"How did you know?" she asked.
Victor's face relaxed. "I told you - I knew your mother. She made this for you every Sunday morning."
While Elena ate, Victor pulled out an old leather case. Inside were old photos. He gave one to Elena.
She gasped. It showed her mother and father, smiling in front of their old house. Beside them stood Victor, looking exactly the same as he did now.
"You really did know them," she whispered.
"I was your mother's protector," Victor said. "Assigned by the last members of the Midnight Coven to keep her safe."
"And you failed," Lucian said coldly.
Victor glared at him. "At least I wasn't hunting them."
Elena raised a hand to stop their argument. "I need to understand what's happening. What is the Shadow Council? Amara mentioned them."
The two men traded looks.
"They're the oldest vampires in the world," Victor finally said. "Seven leaders who control everything from the shadows. They've ruled for thousands of years."
"And they want you dead," Lucian added frankly.
Elena nearly dropped her mug. "Me? Why?"
"Because you're a threat," Victor stated. "Daywalker witches have power over vampires. You can give them the ability to walk in sunlight - or take it away."
Lucian moved to the window, looking outside. "The Shadow Council fears what they can't control. And they can't control you."
"But I barely understand my own powers," Elena protested.
"That doesn't matter to them," Victor said. "What matters is what you might become."
Elena remembered the temple, how it had reacted to her blood. "And what is that?"
Before either could answer, the door burst open. Izzy rushed in, her eyes wide with fear.
"They've found us," she gasped. "The whole city is looking for Elena."
She threw a paper onto the bed. Elena picked it up and felt her heart stop. It was a wanted sign with her face on it. The text read: "WANTED: Elena Carter. Reward for capture - alive only."
"They're offering a blood debt to any vampire who brings you in," Izzy explained. "They've never done that before."
Elena looked at Lucian. "What's a blood debt?"
"It means they'll grant any request," he said grimly. "Wealth, power, territory - anything."
"How did they get my picture?" Elena asked, her voice shaking.
"The Shadow Council has eyes everywhere," Victor said. "They've probably been watching you for years."
Izzy sat on the edge of the bed. "It's not just vampires looking for you. They've hired human hunters too. Your face is all over the city."
Elena felt stuck. Just days ago, she'd been a normal woman with a normal life. Now she was being hunted by the most powerful creatures in the world.
"We need to leave Ravenshore," Lucian decided.
"Where would we go?" Elena asked.
"I know a place," Victor said. "A hidden community of supernatural beings. They've been fighting the Shadow Council for centuries."
Lucian shook his head. "That's a fairy tale, Victor. The Resistance isn't real."
"It is," Victor maintained. "I've seen it."
Elena looked between them. "The Resistance?"
"A group of vampires, witches, and others who oppose the Shadow Council's rule," Victor stated. "Your mother was going to take you there before..."
He trailed off, but Elena understood. Before they were killed.
"How do we find them?" she asked.
"I know the way," Victor said. "But we need to leave tonight."
Izzy pulled out a map of the city. "The vampires have set up checkpoints at all the main exits. We'll have to go through the tunnels."
As they planned their escape, Elena noticed something odd. Her marks were starting to glow again, pulsing softly.
"Elena?" Lucian asked, noticing her distraction.
She held up her arm. "Something's happening."
The glow grew stronger, spreading up her arm in complex patterns. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her head. Images flashed through her mind - a dark room, seven people in hooded robes, a stone table with her name carved into it.
"They're talking about me," she gasped. "I can see them."
"Who?" Victor asked, frightened.
"The Shadow Council," Elena whispered. "Seven vampires, each older than the last. They're in a room with no windows..."
Her voice changed, becoming deeper as she repeated what she heard: "The daywalker witch must not reach her full power. If she does, our reign ends."
Elena blinked, coming back to herself. The others were looking at her in shock.
"What just happened?" Izzy asked.
"I think..." Elena said slowly, "I think I saw through their eyes. The Shadow Council. They're afraid of me."
Lucian knelt beside her. "Elena, no one has ever been able to see the Shadow Council. Their location is the best-kept secret in the vampire world."
"I know where they are," Elena said with certainty. "They're here in Ravenshore. Under the old clock tower."
Victor and Lucian traded stunned looks.
"This changes everything," Victor said. "If you can see them..."
"Then we have a chance," Lucian finished.
Elena stood up, feeling stronger than before. "We don't run. We fight."
"That's suicide," Izzy argued. "They're the oldest vampires alive!"
"And I'm the last daywalker witch," Elena answered. Her marks glowed brighter, showing her determination. "They want me? They can come and get me."
The floor suddenly trembled beneath them. The windows rocked as a low rumble filled the air.
"What's happening?" Elena asked.
Lucian ran to the window. "They're here."
Outside, the sky had turned dark though it was only noon. Storm clouds gathered above the safe house, swirling strangely.
"How did they find us so fast?" Victor growled.
Elena looked down at her bright marks and understood. "It's me. They followed my power."
The front door of the safe house burst inward with a deafening crash. Footsteps sounded through the house, coming closer.
"Get behind me," Lucian demanded, pushing Elena back.
The bedroom door slowly opened. A tall person stood in the doorway, face hidden by a hood. When it spoke, its voice was ancient and cold.
"Elena Carter," it said. "The Shadow Council requests your presence."
The figure pulled back its hood, showing a face that made everyone in the room gasp.
It was Amara.
"Surprised?" she smiled, her golden eyes now replaced with empty black pits. "I brought friends."
Behind her, six more hooded forms appeared in the hallway.
"The Shadow Council," Victor whispered in horror.
"In the flesh," Amara said. "And we're here to collect what's ours."
