Amara's Plan Revealed

Amara's Plan Revealed
The blue glow from Elena's skin was the only light in the old temple. Amara's cruel smile faded as she realized Elena wasn't scared.
"You won't win," Elena said, standing taller. The kiss she had shared with Lucian gave her strength. She could still feel their link humming between them.
"Brave words from someone who doesn't understand what's happening," Amara laughed. Her bright eyes gleamed in the darkness. "Did you think I brought you here just to kill you? No, Elena. I have bigger plans."
Lucian moved closer to Elena, his body tense. "Whatever game you're playing, it ends now."
"Game?" Amara's voice echoed through the room. "This is no game. This is the end of five hundred years of waiting!"
The temple suddenly shook. Dust fell from the ceiling as the seven doorways around them started to glow brighter.
"We need to find a way out," Lucian whispered to Elena.
"There's no escape," Amara said. With a wave of her hand, old books and scrolls appeared on the stone table where the fake Victor had been. "But since you opened the temple for me, I'll share what you've both been too blind to see."
Elena stepped toward the table, drawn by the books. When she touched the first one, words in a strange tongue lit up under her fingers.
"I can... read this," she said, shocked.
"Of course you can," Amara said. "Your ancestor's blood runs in your veins."
Elena's eyes widened as she read. "The Life Debt isn't what you told us. It's not just a bond."
"Keep reading," Amara said, walking around the table. "Learn the truth your vampire boyfriend has been hiding."
Lucian's face darkened. "Elena, don't listen to her."
But Elena couldn't stop reading. The words seemed to glow brighter, pulling her in. "The Life Debt was created by... you, Amara. You made it to steal power from witches."
"Not steal," Amara amended. "Transfer. There's a difference."
Lucian grabbed Elena's arm. "We need to leave. Now."
"Afraid she'll learn your secret, Lucian?" Amara asked. "Tell her how you've known about her since she was a child. Tell her how you watched her parents die."
Elena pulled away from Lucian, her blue marks burning. "What is she talking about?"
Lucian's eyes were hurt. "It wasn't like that. I tried to save them."
"Liar!" Amara hissed. "You tracked Elena's family for me. You've been hunting witches for centuries!"
The temple shook again, harder this time. One of the doors cracked.
Elena turned back to the books, flipping pages furiously. The truth was here somewhere. Her eyes caught a drawing that made her gasp—it showed a vampire and a witch linked by blue light, with the witch's power flowing into the vampire.
"The ritual," she whispered. "It's not about balance. It's about taking."
"Finally, she understands," Amara said. "The Life Debt ritual doesn't just connect us. When completed under the blood moon, it will transfer your daywalking ability to me. Permanently."
"And what happens to Elena?" Lucian asked.
Amara's smile was cold. "All magic has a price."
Elena felt sick as she read further. "It would kill me."
"A necessary sacrifice," Amara said with a shrug. "Your ancestors understood sacrifice. That's why they cursed me to darkness five hundred years ago."
More bits fell into place as Elena read. "You can't walk in daylight. That's why you need me."
"Need is such a weak word," Amara said. "I've spent centuries searching for a daywalker witch strong enough for the ritual. The others... failed."
"The others?" Elena asked.
"Your mother was close," Amara said. "But not strong enough. Your power is different, Elena. When you kissed Lucian, the bond became complete. Now we just need the final step."
Elena looked at Lucian, betrayal in her eyes. "You knew about this?"
Before he could answer, a new voice echoed through the hall.
"He knew enough."
Victor—the real Victor—stumbled through the opening they had entered from. Blood stained his clothes, but his eyes were clear.
"Victor!" Elena cried.
"Don't trust either of them," Victor gasped, leaning against a wall. "Lucian has been hunting your family for centuries. Amara has been collecting your blood while you slept."
"So dramatic," Amara sighed. "But he's not wrong."
The temple shook again, and a crack spread across the floor.
"What's happening?" Elena asked.
"The temple recognizes its true mistress," Amara said. "It's been waiting for you, Elena. For the last witch of the Midnight Coven."
Elena looked at the growing cracks. Blue light was flowing through them, the same color as her marks.
"I won't help you," she said.
"You already have," Amara laughed. "The temple is awake. The blood moon is high. All I need now is to complete the ritual."
She pulled out a silver knife, its blade shaped like a crescent moon.
"Your heart's blood on the altar, freely given through the Life Debt, will make me unstoppable."
Lucian moved in front of Elena. "You'll have to go through me first."
"Gladly," Amara said. Her form began to change, her skin changing to shadow, her golden eyes burning brighter.
Victor threw something to Elena—a small leather book. "Your mother's journal! The counter-ritual is in there!"
Elena caught it just as Amara lunged at Lucian. They crashed together with supernatural speed, the force throwing Elena back against the altar.
As Lucian and Amara fought, their movements too fast to follow, Elena hurriedly opened her mother's journal. Inside were drawings similar to her own marks, and writing in the same strange language she could somehow read.
"There's a way to break the Life Debt," she realized. "A way to turn it back on Amara."
Victor crawled toward her, his power fading. "Your mother died trying to complete that ritual. It requires a sacrifice."
"What kind of sacrifice?" Elena asked.
"Blood of the bonded," Victor whispered. "Both must bleed willingly on the altar."
Across the room, Amara had Lucian pinned against a pillar, her shadow-hand at his throat.
"Blood willingly given," Elena repeated. She looked down at her glowing arms, then at Lucian fighting against Amara.
She had a choice to make.
The temple rumbled powerfully. Chunks of roof began to fall. The seven doors were now blazing with blue fire.
"It's now or never," Victor pushed.
Elena's mind raced. Her mother had died trying this ritual. Lucian had hunted her family. Amara wanted her dead. But the temple was reacting to her, calling to her blood.
She stood and called out, her voice stronger than she knew it could be: "Amara!"
The elder vampire turned, still holding Lucian.
"You want my power?" Elena said. "Come and take it."
Elena put her palm on the altar. Her marks flashed brighter than ever before, sending blue light racing across the floor toward the center of the room.
Amara's eyes widened. "No! That's not the ritual!"
The floor beneath them split open, showing a swirling vortex of darkness and light.
"What have you done?" Amara screamed as the temple began to fall around them.
Elena looked at Lucian, their eyes meeting across the chaos.
"Trust me," she whispered through their bond.
And then the floor gave way, sending them all into the abyss below.
