Betrayal Revealed
Betrayal Revealed
Izzy's warning came too late. Vampires were already coming into the farmhouse through every broken window. Sunlight streamed in, pushing Lucian back into the shadows.
"Run!" Victor yelled, pulling Elena toward the cellar.
But there were too many of them. Strong hands grabbed Elena from behind. She kicked and screamed as a vampire with bright red hair dragged her away from Lucian.
"Let her go!" Lucian growled, his eyes glowing with anger. He tried to move forward but hissed in pain as sunshine touched his skin.
Izzy stood in the hallway, the crystal vial of Elena's blood still in her hand. But instead of looking pleased, she looked sad.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't have a choice."
The red-haired vampire pulled Elena outside into the bright morning light. She could see five black cars parked on the dirt road. Men and women in dark suits stood guard, their eyes flashing red in the sunshine.
"Take her to Amara," someone ordered.
"No!" Elena screamed. She felt the familiar warm feeling in her arm. The blue marks began to glow brightly. Without thinking, she slammed her arm into her captor's stomach.
The vampire let go, surprised by her strength. Elena didn't waste time. She ran back toward the barn, toward Lucian.
Inside, Victor was facing three vampires at once. Lucian was trapped in a corner, unable to help as sunshine filled most of the room.
"Lucian!" Elena cried.
Their eyes met across the room. Through their bond, Elena felt his pain and fear - not for himself, but for her.
"Stay back!" he warned.
But it was too late. The red-haired vampire caught her again, this time with a friend. They dragged her back outside.
"Wait!" Izzy called, following them. "Amara wants her unharmed."
The vampires ignored her. They pushed Elena into the back seat of the biggest car and slammed the door.
Through the tinted windows, Elena watched hopelessly as more vampires swarmed into the farmhouse. She couldn't see Lucian or Victor anymore.
Izzy climbed into the car beside her. The door locked with a click.
"How could you?" Elena asked, her voice shaking with anger and hurt. "I trusted you."
Izzy looked down at her hands. "It's complicated."
"Try explaining," Elena said coldly.
The car started moving, bouncing down the dirt road. Elena felt each bump like a punch to her gut. Her best friend had betrayed her. Again.
"I've been a vampire for fifteen years," Izzy finally said. "Amara turned me when I was dying from cancer."
Elena stared at her in shock. "Fifteen years? But we've been friends for five years!"
"I was assigned to watch you," Izzy admitted. "To get close to you and report back to the Council."
The pain of this betrayal was worse than seeing Izzy with Marcus. Elena felt sick.
"Was any of it real?" she whispered. "Our friendship? The movie nights? The birthday parties?"
Izzy's eyes filled with tears. "It started as a job. But, Elena, you became my real friend. I care about you."
Elena turned away, unable to look at her. Outside the window, the farmland rushed by in a green blur.
"What about Marcus?" she asked after a long pause.
"He was assigned to you too," Izzy said quietly. "But something happened that the Council didn't expect."
"What?"
"He fell in love with you. For real."
Elena looked back at Izzy, searching her face for lies. But she saw only sadness there.
"The night you found us together," Izzy continued, "I was warning him. The Council discovered he had real feelings for you. They ordered him to kill you."
Elena felt cold all over. "Kill me? Why?"
"Because you're too valuable. Too dangerous." Izzy reached for Elena's hand, but Elena pulled away. "Marcus refused to hurt you. He was going to help you escape."
"Then why were you kissing him?" Elena asked.
"I wasn't. I was saying goodbye." Izzy's voice cracked. "The Council killed him that night. After you ran away. They made me watch."
The car hit a bump, jolting them both. Elena gripped the seat, trying to understand what she was hearing.
"If Marcus is dead, then who was the man in the shadows at his apartment that night?" Elena asked, remembering the figure she'd glimpsed as she'd fled into the rain.
"Probably one of Amara's spies," Izzy said. "She's been watching you your whole life."
Memories flashed through Elena's mind: strange people watching her on the street, losing time during her "episodes," the constant feeling that someone was following her.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Elena asked. "You could have warned me!"
"I was afraid," Izzy revealed. "The Council monitors everything I do. If I betrayed them, they'd kill me too."
"But you're betraying them now," Elena pointed out.
Izzy smiled sadly. "Yes. I guess I am."
The car slowed, turning onto a smoother road. Through the front window, Elena could see they were going back toward the city.
"Where are they taking me?" she asked.
"To the Cathedral," Izzy said. "Amara needs you for a ritual tonight. The blood moon."
Elena felt cold fear in her stomach. "What ritual?"
"I don't know exactly. But it has something to do with the Shadow Walker."
Elena remembers the dark figure with Lucian's sister's face. Whatever Amara was planning, it couldn't be good.
"I need to get back to Lucian," Elena said quickly. "Our bond—can you feel if he's still alive?"
She closed her eyes, trying to sense him through their link. There was pain, but also resolve. He was living!
Elena opened her eyes to find Izzy watching her closely.
"I can help you escape," Izzy whispered, looking nervously at the vampire driving the car. "But you need to trust me one more time."
"Why should I?" Elena asked.
"Because I'm trying to make things right," Izzy said. "And because Marcus died trying to protect you."
Before Elena could answer, the car stopped suddenly. The driver swore loudly.
"What's happening?" Elena asked, looking out the window.
A huge tree had fallen across the road, blocking their way. The driver got out to check.
"Now," Izzy whispered quickly. She pulled something from her pocket—a small key. "The back door. Run when I create a distraction."
Elena paused. Was this another trick?
Suddenly, the driver screamed. Elena looked up to see Victor's knife sticking out of his chest.
Izzy unlocked Elena's door. "Go! Now!"
As Elena jumped out of the car, the sky turned dark with storm clouds. Lightning flashed, and thunder rolled across the hills.
Elena's anger, fear, and sadness boiled over. Her magic rushed through her body. The blue marks on her arms glowed so bright they looked like fire.
The ground beneath her feet began to shake. Cracks emerged in the road. The other vampires scrambled out of their cars, looking around in confusion.
"Elena, control it!" Izzy shouted, climbing out after her.
But Elena couldn't stop the magic now. The earthquake grew stronger. Trees swayed dangerously. The farmhouse in the distance started to collapse.
"Lucian!" Elena screamed, reaching out through their bond.
That's when she saw it—a small stone building half-hidden in the trees. A mausoleum with strange marks carved into its walls. The same marks that were on her arms.
As the ground split open between her and the vampires, Elena ran toward the building. Inside, she'd find answers. She was sure of it.
Behind her, Izzy called her name. But it was too late. Elena pushed open the heavy stone door and stepped into darkness.
