Sunlight Gift
Sunlight Gift
The Shadow Walker's face changed from Lucian's sister to something darker and more terrible. Then, without notice, the swirling darkness collapsed back into the floor. The cracked stone fixed itself as if nothing had happened.
Elena stood frozen, her heart beating. "What just happened?"
Amara screamed in rage. "No! It was supposed to rise! The ritual was perfect!"
In the chaos, Lucian grabbed Elena's hand and pulled her toward a side door. "Now!" he shouted to Victor, who suddenly broke free from the vampires holding him.
They ran through a narrow hallway as the sounds of fighting exploded behind them. Amara's angry cries bounced off the stone walls.
"This way," Victor said, leading them down a hidden stairwell. "There's an old tunnel that leads out of the city."
As they fell into darkness, Elena's arm markings glowed blue, lighting their way. Her mind was spinning with questions.
"How did you break free from the blood control?" she asked Lucian.
His eyes, now clear and his own again, met hers. "Your voice. When you mentioned my sister... I remembered who I was."
They reached the bottom of the stairs and rushed through a low tunnel. Water dripped from the roof, and rats scurried away from their footsteps.
"The Council will follow," Victor warned. "We need to hide somewhere they won't look."
"I know a place," Lucian said. "But it's dangerous in a different way."
An hour later, they exited from the tunnel into an empty field outside the city. Dawn was coming, the sky turning gray in the east.
"We need to hurry," Lucian said, looking worried at the lightening sky. "The sun will rise soon."
They ran across the field toward an old home sitting alone on a hill. Its windows were boarded up, and the yard was overgrown with weeds.
"What is this place?" Elena asked as they reached the door.
"My home," Lucian answered quietly. "From when I was human."
Inside, the house was dusty but undamaged. Old furniture sat wrapped in sheets, looking like ghosts in the dim light.
"You've kept it all these years?" Victor asked, shocked.
Lucian nodded. "To remember what I lost."
He led them to a secret cellar beneath the kitchen floor. "We'll be safe here," he said. "No vampire would think to look for me in a place with so many windows."
As they settled into the dusty cellar, Elena noticed Lucian groaning in pain. The growing daylight was seeping through the cracks in the floors above.
"The sun hurts you even down here?" she asked.
"Any sunlight burns," Lucian explained. "Even filtered through windows or cracks."
Elena looked at her glowing arm tattoos. An thought formed in her mind.
"My blood," she said suddenly. "Amara said my ancestors could help vampires walk in daylight."
Victor's eyes widened. "The daywalker gift. It's real?"
"It's too dangerous," Lucian shook his head. "If it doesn't work, I'll burn to ash."
"I know it will work," Elena maintained. "I can feel it."
She held out her wrist, the blue marks pulsing with light. "Do you trust me?"
Lucian paused, then nodded slowly. "With my life."
"Just a small amount," Victor warned. "The bond between you is already strong. Too much blood could create something... unpredictable."
Lucian took Elena's wrist gently. His eyes met hers as his teeth cut her skin. Elena felt a sharp pain, then a strange warmth running from her arm throughout her body.
Their Life Debt bond flared brightly in her mind. For a moment, she could see through Lucian's eyes, feel his hunger and his control fighting against each other. She saw flashes of memories - his ages of loneliness, his search for her ancestors, his first glimpse of her in that rainy alley.
When he pulled away, both their arms were glowing with blue light. The markings from Elena's arm had partially transferred to Lucian's skin, forming a pattern like swirling stars.
"How do you feel?" she asked.
"Different," Lucian whispered. "Lighter somehow."
Victor checked the lower stairs. "We should know soon if it worked. The sun is rising."
They climbed back to the main floor of the house. Sunlight was streaming through the cracks in the boarded-up windows, sending bright lines across the dusty floor.
Lucian stood at the edge of a sunbeam, hesitant. "Five hundred years," he muttered. "Five hundred years since I felt the sun without pain."
Slowly, he reached his hand toward the light. His fingers trembled as they touched the golden beam.
Nothing happened.
No smoke, no burning.
Elena watched, her heart pounding, as Lucian stepped fully into the sunshine. It bathed his face, making his dark hair shine with secret red highlights she'd never noticed before.
A single tear slid down his face. "It's warm," he said in wonder. "I'd forgotten how warm it feels."
Something stirred in Elena's heart seeing this dangerous, powerful vampire moved to tears by simple sunshine. For the first time, she saw him not as a monster or a hesitant ally, but as someone who had lost everything and lived in darkness for centuries.
Victor watched them with a strange look. "The gift is temporary," he warned. "It won't last forever."
"How long?" Elena asked.
"A day. Maybe two," Victor answered. "Depends on how strong your blood is."
Lucian walked to one of the boarded windows and pulled away a wood. Sunlight filled the room. He stood in it, eyes closed, face raised to the light.
"We should keep moving," Victor urged. "Amara and the Council will be searching."
"No," Lucian said strongly. "This is the perfect hiding place. No vampire would risk coming here in daylight. And now, I can defend it."
He turned to Elena, his eyes bright with new purpose. "We have time to plan our next move. And I need to tell you everything about Amara and the Shadow Walker."
As Victor reluctantly agreed, Elena felt the tie between her and Lucian hum with energy. Their blood mixing had made it stronger, clearer.
"The Shadow Walker," Elena said. "Why did it have your sister's face?"
Pain flashed across Lucian's features. "Because the Shadow Walker isn't some monster from another world. It's my sister."
"What?" Elena gasped.
"Amara didn't kill her that night," Lucian explained. "She did something worse. She turned her into a vessel, a living prison for an ancient power."
Victor nodded sadly. "The Council has been searching for the Walker for centuries. They want to use its power to rule both vampires and humans."
"And Amara wants to control it through me," Elena realized. "That's why she needs my blood."
Lucian took her hands. "Your blood doesn't just give daywalking. It can bind or free supernatural beings. That's why—"
His words cut off as he doubled over in sudden pain.
"Lucian?" Elena cried, catching him as he stumbled.
His skin began to smoke where the sunshine touched it. The blue markings on his arm were fading quickly.
"Something's wrong," Victor said, pulling Lucian back into the darkness. "The gift shouldn't wear off this quickly."
Elena felt a sharp pain in her chest. Through their link, she could feel Lucian's agony as the sunlight that had brought him joy moments ago now threatened to destroy him.
"What's happening?" she asked desperately.
Victor's face turned grim. "Someone is interfering with your bond."
A soft laugh echoed through the house. Elena spun around to see Izzy standing in the doorway, her eyes glowing red.
"Sorry to interrupt this touching moment," Izzy said with a cruel smile. "But Amara sends her regards."
In her hand was a crystal bottle filled with red liquid. Elena's blood.
"Amazing how much we collected while you slept," Izzy said. "Enough to break any bond you try to create."
As Victor lunged for her, the windows of the house broke inward. Sunlight poured in from all sides, trapping them in a dangerous cage of light.
