Dreams and Memories

Dreams and Memories
Elena's eyes flew open in the dark. Her heart was racing, but she wasn't in the old church anymore. She was in a small room with stone walls. Moonlight poured through a tiny window.
She looked down and gasped. These weren't her hands. They were bigger, stronger, and belonged to a young man. She was seeing through someone else's eyes.
"Lucian," she whispered, realizing she was in his memory.
The door burst open. A woman with long dark hair rushed in. "They're coming!" she cried. "Father says we must hide!"
Elena felt Lucian's fear as he grabbed a sword from the wall. "I won't hide, Maria. I'll fight for our family."
Elena watched through Lucian's eyes as he ran down a tight hallway. Outside, men on horses circled a small stone house. They brought torches and swords.
"Blackthorn!" their leader yelled. "Come out and face justice!"
Lucian's father stepped outside, his hands raised. "Please," he begged. "My family has done nothing wrong."
The leader laughed. "You harbor a witch. That's enough."
With a sharp move, he sent his men forward. Elena felt Lucian's rage as he ran to help his father. But he was too late. A sword flashed in the torchlight, and his father fell.
"No!" Lucian screamed, charging forward.
The scene changed. Elena was now in a dark forest. Lucian was running, carrying his little sister. Behind them, their home burned. His mother and father were dead. His brother had been taken.
"We'll be safe soon," he told his sister, though he didn't believe it.
A shadow moved between the trees. Lucian froze. A woman stepped into a patch of moonlight. She was beautiful, with gray hair and golden eyes.
"Amara," Elena breathed.
"I can save you both," Amara said, her voice soft as silk. "But there is a price."
Elena felt Lucian's frantic hope. "Anything," he said. "Just save my sister."
Amara smiled, showing sharp teeth. "Then come to me."
The memory moved again. Elena felt terrible pain as Amara's teeth sank into Lucian's neck. His sister screamed somewhere close. He tried to fight, but couldn't move.
"Your blood is special," Amara whispered. "Just like your mother's."
As darkness closed in, Lucian saw his sister in Amara's arms. "You promised!" he cried.
"I promised to save her," Amara said. "And I will. She'll be my daughter now."
Elena jerked awake, tears on her face. She was back in the secret room, lying on the small bed. Serena sat close, watching her with worried eyes.
"You were dreaming," she said. "About him, wasn't you?"
Elena nodded, her throat tight. "I saw how he became a vampire. Amara turned him after killing his family."
"The Life Debt is growing stronger," Serena explained. "Soon you'll share more than just dreams."
Elena sat up, wiping her tears. "Where is Lucian now? Is he still... controlled?"
"Victor is trying to break the blood control," Serena said. "But it's not easy."
The door opened, and Amara walked in. She looked different now—tired and sad.
"Amara killed Lucian's family," Elena said, anger rising inside her. "I saw it in his memories."
Amara didn't deny it. "I've killed many families over the centuries. Lucian's was just one of many."
"Why?" Elena asked. "Why would you do that?"
"Power," Amara said simply. "Lucian's family had witch blood, like yours. I needed it to survive."
Elena felt sick. "And my parents? Did you kill them for the same reason?"
Amara's bright eyes met hers. "Yes," she admitted. "But I didn't know then what I know now."
"What's that?" Elena asked.
"That you're the key to something greater than mere survival," Amara said. "You can control the Shadow Walker."
Before Elena could ask more, the room shook. Dust fell from the roof.
"They're getting closer," Serena warned.
Elena stood up, holding the crystal vial. "What about Victor? We can't leave him."
"Victor can take care of himself," Amara said. "We need to reach the cathedral before the Council does."
They rushed through another hidden passage. As they walked, Elena felt a strange pull in her chest. The Life Debt was pulling her toward Lucian.
"I can feel him," she said. "He's in pain."
Amara nodded. "The Council's control is strong. But your connection is stronger."
They exited in a narrow street. Rain fell from a dark sky. In the distance, Elena could see the cathedral's broken towers.
"There," Amara pointed. "That's where we'll make our stand."
They raced through empty streets, staying to the shadows. As they neared the church, Elena felt the pull grow stronger. Lucian was close.
Inside the church, moonlight streamed through broken windows. The altar stone glowed with a faint blue light that matched Elena's marks.
"What now?" Elena asked.
Amara took the crystal bottle from Elena's hand. "Now we wait."
Footsteps echoed outside. Elena's heart pounded as the church doors burst open. Victor stumbled in, bleeding from a wound in his side.
"Run!" he gasped. "It's a trap!"
Too late. Council vampires poured in behind him. And there, at the center, stood Lucian. His eyes were still empty, but Elena could feel something fighting beneath the surface.
"Lucian," she called. "I know you're in there. I've seen your memories. I know what Amara did to you."
Lucian's face twitched. For a moment, his eyes cleared. "Elena?" he whispered.
Then the coldness returned. He lunged forward, grabbing Elena's arm. "The Council wants you alive," he said. "For now."
To Elena's shock, Amara didn't fight. Instead, she smiled and stepped back. "Perfect," she said. "Bring her to the altar."
Victor tried to stop them, but two vampires held him down. "Amara is working with the Council!" he yelled. "She always has been!"
Elena squirmed in Lucian's grip. "What is he talking about?"
Amara's smile widened. "Did you really think I would share power with a half-blood like you?"
She turned to the Council vampires. "Place her on the altar. When the moon reaches its peak, the Shadow Walker will rise."
Lucian pulled Elena toward the altar. Through their bond, she could feel his real self trying to break free.
"Remember your sister," she whispered. "Remember what Amara took from you."
Lucian's grip tightened painfully. Then, suddenly, it loosened. He looked down at her, his eyes clear.
"Elena," he said, his voice his own again.
Before she could answer, a blinding light filled the cathedral. The floor beneath the altar cracked open, showing a swirling darkness.
"The Shadow Walker," Amara gasped, her face filled with joy. "It's coming!"
From the darkness, a tall form began to rise. Not a vampire, not a witch, but something older and more terrible.
And as its shadowy face turned toward them, Elena saw with fear that it wore Lucian's sister's face.
