The room was still, and the blood that had once stained the floor was now only a fading memory, replaced by the overwhelming silence that hung heavy in the air.
Gabrielle sat beside Matthew, her hand clutching his, her body trembling with fear, worry, and exhaustion.
She could feel the weight of the moment, the reality of what had just transpired sinking in deeper with every passing second.
Matthew’s body was still, his chest barely rising and falling with shallow breaths. His once vibrant skin had paled, and his normally radiant aura was now a distant shadow of its usual intensity. Gabrielle’s heart ached as she watched him, helpless, as if the man who had once been so powerful and invincible was now lying broken before her.
But she refused to give up.
Taking a deep breath, she reached for the cloth at the side of the bed, gently dabbing at the blood that still marred his wound. Her movements were careful, tender, as if she feared that the slightest mistake might make things worse. She had to do something, anything to help him.
Suddenly, Matthew’s hand twitched. Gabrielle froze, her heart racing, her fingers stilling on his skin. For a moment, there was nothing but the quiet sound of their breathing and the soft hum of the air in the room.
Then, his eyes fluttered open.
Gabrielle gasped, her eyes widening with disbelief as she stared down at him. “Matthew?” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “You’re awake.”
His gaze met hers, and for the briefest moment, there was confusion in his eyes, as if he were still trying to shake off the fog of unconsciousness. His lips parted, and he breathed in deeply, as though coming back from the depths of a dark sleep.
“Gabrielle…” His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper, but it still sent a ripple of relief through her.
“I thought I lost you,” she breathed, tears threatening to spill over. “I thought I couldn’t save you.”
Matthew’s lips curled into a faint, pained smile. “You… did save me,” he said, his voice growing stronger. He blinked slowly, his pupils adjusting as his mind started to clear.
Gabrielle gently placed her hand on his chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breathing. She knew what had happened. His body had started to heal on its own. Vampires, especially powerful ones like Matthew, had extraordinary regenerative abilities. Though his injuries had been grave, his body would mend itself. But seeing him so vulnerable—seeing him in pain—had shaken her in ways she hadn’t imagined possible.
Matthew slowly sat up, groaning slightly as the healing process worked its way through him. The wound on his side was closing, the blood evaporating, leaving behind only the faintest traces of scarring. His strength was returning, but it was clear he was still weak, still recovering from the assault he had endured.
Gabrielle could hardly believe it. He was healing before her very eyes. The deep gash in his side had already become little more than a faint scar, and she could see his strength returning as the wounds fully closed up. Vampires were resilient, but witnessing it firsthand still left her in awe.
“You heal fast,” Gabrielle murmured, her voice thick with both wonder and relief.
Matthew’s eyes darkened, his expression softening. “It’s not the kind of healing I wanted,” he admitted. “Not like this.”
Gabrielle’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Matthew sighed, a pained look crossing his face as he leaned back against the bed, his body still adjusting to the change. “Ruelle. Evelyn. They’ve taken something from me—something important. I can heal, yes, but the damage they’ve caused… that won’t be so easily repaired.”
Gabrielle frowned. “What are you talking about? What did they take?”
Matthew’s eyes were clouded with a deep, unspoken worry. “The silver key,” he said quietly. “It’s more than just a symbol of power—it’s a key to something far greater. And if they have it, they’ll have the leverage to destroy everything I’ve fought for. Everything I’ve built. The throne. The legacy.”
Gabrielle’s heart sank at his words. “But you’ll get it back, right? You’ll find a way.”
Matthew looked at her, his eyes softer now, though the weight of the situation still hung heavy in the air. “I don’t know if I can. But I’ll try. For you. For us.”
Gabrielle could feel the sincerity in his words. She could feel the depth of his emotions in the way he looked at her, the intensity of the bond that had formed between them over the past weeks. Despite everything that had happened, despite the danger that still loomed over them, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of hope.
Matthew reached for her hand, his touch warm and familiar. “Thank you for not giving up on me,” he whispered, his voice thick with gratitude. “I don’t deserve you.”
Gabrielle squeezed his hand gently, shaking her head. “You don’t have to say that. I believe in you, Matthew. I always will.”
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence in the room was heavy, but it was a comfortable kind of silence—one that spoke of understanding, of trust, and of the connection that had grown between them over the course of their tumultuous journey.
And as the minutes ticked by, Gabrielle could feel the tension between them shift. They were no longer just a vampire and his contract wife. They were something more.
Something unspoken but undeniable.
And even though danger still lurked on the horizon, even though there was still much to be done, Gabrielle knew one thing for sure.
She wasn’t going to let him face this fight alone.
“Whatever happens,” she said softly, her voice full of determination, “we’ll face it together. You and me.”
Matthew’s smile was faint but genuine. “Together,” he repeated, his hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face.
And for the first time in a long while, Gabrielle felt as though they just might have a chance.
