89. Sleeping Arrangements
Reiss
Such a simple statement caused a solemn wave to wash over me. It had me thinking about the situation between Emery and I. She really was my best friend, still would be if it wasn’t for the stunts she pulled with Cindy. And those hurtful words she said. But I was the one that hurt her first. We were on speaking terms now, however it was mainly because we worked together.
I sighed. It was too soon, I shouldn’t push it. Turns out we both have a ton of things we need to atone for.
To my surprise, Cindy rolled her eyes. “No use crying over what could have been. This was for the best and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Glen smiled and so did I. As I watched them, a strange feeling settled inside me. Maybe it was the smell of the food or hearing Glen and Antonio bond over wearing braces in middle school. It could have even been the way gray clouds blocked out the sun and the cool breeze passed us by. It’s as if this was picture perfect, as if everything was set into place. A puzzle I never knew I was putting together.
Fate had brought us all here in a way I never expected. In a strange way, if Roger hadn’t been such a backstabbing dictator, I wouldn’t have known that in a pack 3 hours away, there would be a woman that could change my life for the better.
Cindy
That evening
The clouds from earlier were just a fair warning compared to now. Thunder shook the ground while rain poured like a scattered waterfall. I hugged the folded blanket close to my chest, standing and watching the rain through the upper floor window.
I heard someone coming towards me and turned my head to see Glen heading my way. He lowered the phone from his ear.
“What did he say?” I asked, turning to him fully.
“Just as you’d expect. He already spoke with Alpha Reiss so he didn’t sound all that surprised when I filled him in.”
“Didn’t Reiss tell you to call him by his first name? Without the title?”
“‘Reiss’. I don’t know, it feels weird to say it.” He lifted his cellphone. “He wants to talk to you.”
I froze, but nodded and took the phone away from him. I pressed it against me. “Hello? Alpha Colt?”
“From what I heard it seems like you will be my new daughter in law.” His voice coming from the other end sounded humorous, almost playful. I forced a smile even when I knew that he couldn’t see me.
“Seems that way, yeah.”
“Well I'm happy for you two. I can’t think of a better match for my son. However, there are a lot of things we need to talk about considering our lineage and how to best sort out this… complicated situation.”
“Okay..?” I narrowed my eyes, already not liking where this was going.
“You're a Luna which comes with a lot of responsibilities. Not only would you be in charge of Alpha Reiss’ pack but you would be in charge of ours as well. A lot of changes need to be made, not to mention the distance which could complicate things. Above all, you will need to prioritize which pack needs the most of your attention. Which shouldn’t be hard seeing as-”
“Alpha Colt,” I kept my voice firm, yet respectful. “This isn’t the place nor the time. We already have enough to think about with the meeting tomorrow. I understand why this would be important to you but we have plenty of time to think over the details. Everyone is trying their best. When the time comes, Glen and I will discuss what we want to do for the future of our pack. Same goes for me and Reiss. I’m well aware that there are a lot of things I still don’t know, but there is nothing stopping me from learning and doing what’s best for both packs. I hope you understand.”
He was silent, then cleared his throat.
“I agree. Sorry If I made it seem like I was pressuring you to choose.”
“You were,” I interrupted him. “But that’s okay. It’s every Alpha for his pack. I’m just happy that reiss is exactly who he claims to be, or you would have sent me to the dogs.”
“Uh.”
“We’ll see you later, Alpha Colt.” I hung up the phone only to look up and see Glen’s shocked expression. “What?”
“I can’t believe you did that,” he said.
I couldn’t believe it either. A couple of months ago I would have never dared to speak to my Alpha like that. But after everything I’ve witnessed and been through, I know that there are scarier things in the world than speaking to my future father-in-law like an equal.
Still, I clasped my hands together. “If he eats me alive, will you save me?”
“I can’t save you if you’re already in someone’s stomach,” Glen jested.
I slapped his shoulder as he laughed his ass off.
“Domestic abuse in this weather? Have mercy!”
“Humph!” I lifted my nose in the air and marched in the direction of the bedrooms. Glen followed suit with a smile I knew all too well.
We stopped in front of one of the guest bedrooms. This was my room, or at least the room I was using while I was here. Glen glanced at me, and I gazed at him.
“So, uh.” He scratched the back of his head. “I know Colt was out of line, but he was right about one thing. We need to figure out the sleeping arrangements for tonight.”
I tilted my head. “I mean, you and I both have our rooms.”
“Yes but…” A hint of red dusted his cheeks.
My hand covered my mouth as I giggled. “Aww, you want to know if you can sleep with me, don’t you? The only thing stopping you is that you don’t want to get in Antonio’s or Reiss’ way.”
“That might be the case,” he admitted.
I rubbed my chin. A genius idea formed in my mind.
“I know exactly what to do!” I told him.
