Chapter 28 Misunderstanding

Chapter 28 Misunderstanding
Lira
I was so shocked as the door that was locked earlier opened with a whip, revealing Alicia. The effects of the mist began to fade as air entered the office. I breathed in more of the air, desperate for the lightheadedness to disappear.
It all happened so fast.
Beta Daniel got up to check the door when I mentioned it was locked and the next thing I knew, I felt dizzy and the room started spinning. I tried to hold myself up because the last thing I wanted was to be at his mercy.
We were alone in his office, and I didn’t entire trust him yet. But it didn’t work. My legs gave up before my brain could process anything, and then I braced myself for the floor, but instead I fell into his arms.
“Lira. What’s wrong?” He asked and I couldn’t even answer. He was about to bring me to the chair I was sitting on earlier when the door opened, and his daughter was standing there, accusing me of the impossible.
I removed myself from his arms, my head in my hands as I slowly found the strength to stand again. Everything suddenly clicked and I realized that this was her plan. She was the one that sprayed the mist in the office. She’s trying to set me up.
“Seducing-” I paused and scoffed, not believing that she was really accusing me of doing that. “Who… Are you out of your mind?”
She narrowed her eyes at me as that annoyingly smug smile played on her lips. My eyes moved to the side and landed on Alpha Kael. My breath caught in my throat and my eyes widened slightly in fear.
No… I didn’t want him to misunderstand this. Especially when he seemed to misunderstand mine and Rowan’s relationship. My heart sank as I studied the expression on his face. But Alicia brought my attention back to her woeful self.
“I should be asking you that question you whore!” She retorted with her hands crossed across her chest. “First, it’s my man, and now my father?”
“No… I think this is a misunderstanding Alicia. I wanted to help Lira with the door, but she seemed like she was too weak to stand, so I had to help.” Daniel said, but Alicia didn’t want to let it die and listen to him.
“No, dad. Don’t defend her. She was clearly trying something, because if she wasn’t, she’ll still be ‘too weak to stand’.” She did air quotes in the air as she spoke. “And she is standing perfectly fine.” Her voice softened and she took a step closer to her dad. “Lira was trying to take advantage of you, and I don’t know what her plan is, or what her agenda is against our family but-”
“You’re delusional!” I yelled, unable to take it anymore. “I don’t have anything against your family, nor was I trying to seduce your father. He’s not the one I’m interested in.”
I had slipped up. Fuck.
She gasped, her hand dramatically on her chest. “Oh really? So, who is the person you’re interested in? My man?”
I kept quiet. Not because the answer to the question was yes, but because the answer was no. And I didn’t want her probing her long witch nose in my business.
“See what I’m saying!” Alicia yelled, taking advantage of my silence. “You’re literally a desperate whore. Seeking attention from everyone because no one wants you. You’re so nasty that you want your step brother. Who, for your information, is dating me!”
I rolled my eyes. My head was beginning to hurt again because her shrill voice was hitting against my eardrums.
“Can you keep it down? This is all a misunderstanding.” I turned to Alpha Kael, my eyes pleading. “I really didn’t come into his office to do anything. I didn’t even plan to come here at all.”
“Bullshit.” She spat and took a menacing step forward. “Tell me. Why do you hate my family so much? What is really your agenda? Because firstly, you pushed me into the pool at the charity ball, just because I wanted to check if you were okay. And now, you’re trying to seduce my father. If you had any decency, you’d at least respect the memory of my mother and respect yourself.”
Anger shot through me in all colors of the rainbow as she spoke. My hands balled into fists by my side. I tried to control myself because the moon goddess knew I wanted to hit her face over and over till her teeth fell out.
But if I did that, it’d validate her words, and that’s the exact opposite of what I wanted.
“I didn’t push you. You know that.” My teeth was grinding against each other as I spoke. The way lying came easy to her irritated me. Or maybe she hated me that much to the point where her morals flew out the window.
If you ask me though, I don’t think she had any morals whatsoever.
"Alpha Kael..." My voice came out barely above a whisper, desperate and pleading as I turned to him fully.
I needed him to believe me. I needed him to see that this was Alicia's scheme. But when I met his gaze, my blood ran cold. His eyes were dark, burning with an anger so intense it made my knees weak for an entirely different reason.
He didn't say a single word. Not to defend me. Not to question Alicia. Not to question her dad. Nothing.
The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating, and I felt my heart crack just a little bit more. Was he really going to believe her over me? Again?
Before I could process what was happening, Alpha Kael moved. His hand wrapped around my wrist. His hold was firm, possessive, and burning hot against my skin. He dragged me out of Beta Daniel's office, ignoring Alicia's triumphant smirk and her father's confused expression.
I stumbled after him, struggling to keep up with his long strides as he pulled me down the hallway. My mind raced with a thousand explanations, a thousand pleas I wanted to voice, but the words died in my throat.
We reached his office and he shoved the door open, pulling me inside with him. The moment we entered, he released my wrist only to slam the door shut behind us and lock it.
