The powers of the council
The powers of the council
"That'll give us ten minutes, maybe less," Isabella said, slumping back with exhaustion. "I'm running low on power. We need to end this soon, or I'll be useless when we need magic most."
"Conserve your strength," Elena said, pushing the truck to its limits. "We'll need you at the monastery."
They drove in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Elena tried to quiet her racing mind, to focus on the immediate challenges ahead. But doubts kept creeping in.
What if they were already too late?
What if Elijah really was The Architect, and he had been planning this for fifteen years?
What if Lucas had already been changed by the ritual, his magic stolen, his very essence altered?
What if she failed her son again, just like she'd failed him three years ago?
No, Elena told herself firmly. I won't fail. Not this time. Whatever it takes.
"We're five minutes out," Katherine announced, checking her GPS. "Elena, when we get there, let me go first. I know the layout, and I can get us through the outer wards without triggering alarms."
"Fine," Elena agreed. "But the moment we're inside, I'm taking point. This is my son we're rescuing."
"Understood," Katherine said. Then, more quietly: "Elena, I need to tell you something. About why I really got involved in the conspiracy originally."
"Now's not the time for confessions," Elena said.
"It might be my only time," Katherine said. "If we don't make it out of there... you should know the truth. I joined the conspiracy because of you."
Elena's hands tightened on the wheel. "What?"
"Five years ago, I was in love with someone in the pack," Katherine said. "Someone who didn't feel the same way. Someone who only had eyes for his true mate. I was angry and hurt, and when the conspiracy approached me with promises of changing how mate bonds worked, of giving people choices instead of destiny... I listened."
"Who?" Elena asked, though part of her already knew the answer.
"Harrison," Katherine admitted. "I was in love with Harrison. And I hated that he chose you over me, even though I knew mate bonds don't work that way. So I joined people who wanted to destroy the very concept of mate bonds. I helped them plan attacks on packs. I gave them intelligence about the Blackwood bloodline. Elena, Lucas's kidnapping... I'm partially responsible for that."
The truck swerved slightly as Elena processed this revelation. "You're telling me this now? Right before we walk into a potentially fatal situation?"
"Because if we don't make it out, you deserve to know why this all happened," Katherine said. "And if we do make it out... you can decide what to do with that information. I'll accept whatever punishment you and Harrison decide."
"You've already been punished," Isabella said quietly from the back. "Look at that scar on your arm. Whatever they did to you when you tried to leave wasn't pretty."
"It wasn't," Katherine agreed. "But I deserved it. I deserved worse."
"We'll discuss this later," Elena said, forcing her anger down. "Right now, I need you focused. Can you still do this? Can you still help me save my son despite your history?"
"Yes," Katherine said without hesitation. "Saving Lucas is how I start to make amends. It won't erase what I did, but it's a beginning."
The monastery appeared ahead, a dark silhouette against the night sky. It looked exactly like the ruins it was supposed to be—crumbling stone walls, broken windows, collapsed sections. But Elena could feel the power emanating from it. Dark magic wrapped around the structure like chains.
"Park here," Katherine instructed. "We'll approach on foot. The outer wards start about a hundred yards from the building."
They climbed out of the truck, and Elena took a moment to stretch her cramped muscles. The night air was cold and carried the scent of old stone and older magic.
"I can feel it," Isabella whispered. "The ritual has already started. They're trying to pull the power out of Lucas right now."
Elena's heart clenched. "How long do we have?"
"Thirty minutes, maybe less," Isabella said. "After that, the transfer will be complete. Elena, even if we stop the ritual, if they've already begun extracting the magic..."
"What?" Elena demanded when Isabella trailed off.
"It might have already damaged Lucas's connection to his wolf," Isabella finished reluctantly. "The Original Pack magic is intertwined with his very soul. Tearing it out could leave him... broken."
"Then we make sure they don't succeed," Elena said with fierce determination. "Katherine, lead the way."
They moved through the darkness, Katherine navigating by memory and magical sense. The ruins loomed larger as they approached, and Elena could hear chanting now. Multiple voices speaking in a language that made her skin crawl.
"The outer wards," Katherine whispered, stopping them at an invisible barrier. She pulled out a knife and cut her palm, letting blood drip onto the ground in a specific pattern. "This should convince the wards that we're expected guests."
The air shimmered, and Elena felt a pressure release around them. They stepped forward, now inside the first layer of protection.
"Two more to go," Katherine said, already moving toward the monastery's north entrance. "And we need to hurry. I can feel the ritual intensifying."
They reached the monastery's broken wall, and Katherine led them through a narrow gap that had once been a delivery entrance. Inside, the ruins were deceiving. What looked like collapsed corridors from outside were actually cleverly disguised passages. The conspiracy had rebuilt inside the shell of the old monastery, creating a hidden facility.
"Clever," Isabella muttered. "From above or from a distance, this place looks completely abandoned. But inside, it's fully operational."
"The middle wards are here," Katherine said, gesturing to a doorway that glowed faintly with magical energy. "This is where it gets tricky. We need to…"
She stopped abruptly as a figure stepped out of the shadows ahead of them. A woman with long silver hair and eyes that glowed with power.
Morgana Blackthorn.
"Well," the dark witch said, a smile playing at her lips
