AVA'S POV.
I stared blankly at him for a while, unable to digest what he said properly. Jack's pack was responsible for the death of my family? The Jack I knew? My best friend?
How come? Wait…
Did Jack know all about this? Was he innocent? Or has he been watching and observing me all this time—secrets burning in his eyes?
Something rose in my chest. It felt like a dry lump of bread mixed with disbelief, hanging right in my throat, unable to be pushed down.
I kept swallowing, trying to reason his words.
“How is this possible?” I finally breathed out, as calmly as I could. Taking a deep breath, I continued, “How do you know? Have you checked on the information you're releasing carelessly before giving it to me? Does Jack know about this? How much more do you know? What other secrets are you keeping from me?” I asked, unable to keep the questions from tumbling out of me.
“It's the perfect truth. Now, I wouldn't know if he's aware of all these, but there's a slight chance he might know, and that's why I said not to trust him too much with everything about you. If he knows who you truly are, which I'm hoping he doesn't know right now, then you might be in more danger than you ought to be. His parents might choose to hunt you down. You will have to be very careful.” He said, holding his hands behind him.
Swinging my legs out of my bed, I began to pace the room, my hands in my hair, trying to sink it in, swallow it, and face it.
No. Jack wouldn't know even if that was the truth. How could it be his pact that caused a million things to go wrong in my life?
Still pacing, I tried thinking of Jack and all the things we'd said and done together. Could he have known? Could he have been hiding it from me?
“Are you really sure this is true?” I turned around sharply, brushing my bangs out of my face in frustration.
“I will never lie to you or bring you fake facts.” He replied calmly.
To think that I'd come so close to danger. I would have never imagined becoming close with someone whose background was a huge danger to me.
That was so risky.
Jack's parents… They could be the reason I suffered so much, the reason every day was so miserable for me.
Their hands were painted red with the blood of everyone I knew, and they felt no remorse. This was adding to my list of problems.
“This is crazy. I don't know what to do from now hereon.” I said, as my thumb made contact with my lips, getting crushed by my teeth, as I tried to think.
“You can't get weak yet. There is still a lot we have to worry about.” I slumped back onto the bed once more, my head landing on the pillow, as I stared at the ceiling.
“I'm just confused right now. We still have Prince Asher to worry about.” Finally, I went back to my bed, sitting on it as I stared into Jake's eyes, questions filling mine up: “Why is he here? What is he doing here? He rejected me, obviously, so why is he still here? What does he want from me?”
Jake opened his mouth to start explaining. Unfortunately, there was a knock on the door, and we both turned to see it swing open, bringing in a nurse, who had a few syringes on her tray as she came forward.
“Sorry, but you might have to leave for a while. She has to take medication and rest. You can return when she has fully regained her strength.” The nurse said, placing her tray on a table next to my bed. She began to prepare a shot.
This couldn't happen now. I had a lot to discuss with Jake. The shot would definitely put me to sleep. “Can I not have them now? We were talking about something important, and I can't wait…”
She shook her head firmly, “Doctor's orders. We stick to time here, and this is the time for your drugs. Any conversation will sadly have to be continued later.”
Jake raised a hand in agreement, “We will talk later. Very soon.”
“Don't leave.” I said to him.
“I will be waiting right outside. Anytime you need me, you can call me.” He said, getting up, so he could leave the room.
The nurse hummed a song in low tones as she continued preparing the shots, mixing strange liquid together, before finally rubbing on my arm, preparing it for the shot.
The needle slid in sleekly, and I gave a little wince as I felt the hot liquid shoot down my veins, going downward.
“So, after you rest, you should be able to feel better. This will make you heal faster. Tell me if you feel dehydrated, fuzzy, or just out of it. You simply have to press that button and state your concerns. We'll be available.” She said and walked out of the ward.
When I was quite sure she was gone, I got up from my bed, slipping into my slippers before going the same way she went.
Jake was right outside, seated on a bench. When he saw me, he quickly stood.
“You just got a shot. You should be resting and doing nothing else.”
“Do you think I can rest with all that happened today? Today has been crazily hectic. Is Prince Asher looking for me? Why is he looking for me? It can't be for any good reason, can it?”
“You just have to rest. I promise you that I'll look into it, and I'll provide you with all the answers you will need. You only have to trust me.” He said, and I gave a sigh.
It wouldn't be hard to wait, especially that I'd have to keep seeing Jack, and keep wondering if it would have no consequences to keep on trusting him.
“Fine. I'll await your answers.”
