CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

INDIGO'S POV

Ring ring ring

There went the bell and classes for today were over, I heaved a heavy sigh of relief plopping my head on the table.

“Ughh, I'm so exhausted.” I groaned while Winter patted my head.

“What's wrong Indie?”

“I just feel really burnt out. Worst thing is…I feel like I'm making no progress at all with my elemental powers.”

“I really wish I could help but being a necromancer and all.”

I grunted louder and Winter planted a hand on her chin…contemplating. “I have been wanting to ask.”

“Ask away…” I sounded with no hope at all.

“Unlike most elementals…you're pretty bad at it.”

I glanced at her with blunt eyes before letting out a light chuckle.

“You're not wrong. My family…my whole pack was one of necromancers, I was the only elemental. So you know, I'm not too ashamed of how awful I am.”

“Well…for someone who's had absolutely no experience, you're pretty talented.”

“You think so?”

“I know so, from what Coco and Lucas told me, they'd be minced meat if you hadn't held those things till the professors came. With just enough practice you could be a prodigy!” She said in an uplifted voice and I suddenly flushed.

Getting praised like this was embarrassing.

“Not necessarily. I've kept practicing but it doesn't seem like I'm making any progress.”

“Then you should really get in tune with professor Lyriq,” she smiled, packing her books in her bag. “He's the best the school has ever seen and…”She whispered in a low tone, “He's your mate, he might as well give you special treatment.”

With that she walked out of the classroom, leaving me alone with my thoughts and she wasn't wrong. I was here for a reason, I had to learn how to control my powers so I could not only protect myself but be useful to the Sanctum.

It was odd, I didn't even know what they wanted with me but yet, I still so much wanted to make them proud and make my mates proud.

I bit the bottom of my lips.

Up until that night I was attacked I didn't realize how fortunate I was–to be suddenly surrounded by people who cared for me, and who'd run from miles away to save me if I was in danger.

I felt little drops of tears tickling the corners of my eyes and I brushed them away.

Right!
Lyriq…I had to thank him as well and Valtor, but I hadn't seen him lately. Now that I thought about it, I didn't really know much about any of them. Their hobbies, their likes, where they went or what they eat.

I didn't know what it was like having one mate …now three? I had to do something for them at least to show my appreciation.

After circling around for minutes, I couldn't find him.

“Hmm…” I signed, “where could he be?” The last time all three of them found me so effortlessly and it was funny how I felt them coming.

I closed my eyes, focusing, my senses heightened. I smelt, I listened to the passing breeze, I felt life beam around me.

“There.” I opened my eyes and smiled.

I knew where he was.

It wasn't far from the outskirts of the Academy, just a nearby park, with a vending machine and swing. I wondered what he was doing there. I was excited to find out.

I found him leaning against the rods of the swings. It was early noon but only he seemed to be there. It was unlike Lydia to not notice me by now, he seemed deep in thought.

“Lyriq…” I sounded again, waving my hand vigorously before him, searching for any form of life.

“Indigo?” His gaze swept over me, the red hues of the sun hitting those cold eyes, it made them seem warm. “How did you find me?” He asked, not startled at all.

I looked away, my cheeks turning pink. I wasn't going to blatantly admit it.

“I–I was looking for you.” My voice was suddenly high and my heart began racing. It was different from the mate bond. Was I actually nervous right now?

“What for?” His voice was void, I couldn't make out what he was feeling, if he was happy, or sad, or mad…I didn't know at all and that bothered me so badly.

“I brought you this!” I closed my eyes then shoved a sandwich wrapped in brown paper to him. “I made it for you!” I was scared to open my eyes, what would his reaction be? This chic who treated me so poorly is totally insane?

I braced myself and peeled my eyes open and what I saw completely melted my heart. Lyriq was gazing at the sandwich in his hands but his features were so soft, he usually looked frozen but it seemed he melted a little.

I saw the almost invisible grin that highlighted his face.
Imagine a full out one.

“Oh.” He stated, “thank you. What is it for?”

“I want to call it a truce. We started off on the wrong foot, way wrong and since we're — bound now, I think a fresh start is all we need.”

“I should apologize.”

“Huh?”

“For coming off as the ice king, that's just how I am to everybody.”

“So I've heard.” I chuckled and he ruffled up my hair. There it was again, the sounds of my heart pounding so hard.

This really wasn't a mate bond.

“Also, is something troubling you?”

“Does it seem that way?” He looked up into the noon sky, swirls of light and dark blues, white clouds in constant battle until darkness finally took over.

“I called you multiple times, you seemed lost in thought. If you want to, we can't sit down? I'll buy you a drink, then our truce can be sealed.”

We went to sit over at some benches farther into the park and I bought us some warm drinks. It was silent for some moments but it wasn't the awkward kind, it was the kind I wished time might stop and it would just be us left.

Crazy how I was having thoughts like that.

“Winter's coming…” I said in glee, “May the Goddess bless us plentifully. Oh, I can't wait for the first snow!”

“It's always Winter in my pack, so things like ‘the first snow’ never really excited me.”

“I see…” I placed his hand in mine, I looked into his eyes and absolutely perfect face. “It's still worth looking forward to.”
