Chapter 74 New coalitions, New Fault Lines
"Rever, the council is in chaos," Elder Tamsin rumored over a worn rustic table in the dimly lit room, speaking so vocally her words were just a breath on the air and laced with despair." Those who retain the old path are weakening, and a new body of elders is arising, demanding extreme reform."
Rever’s eyes narrowed as he heeded, his voice steady but laced with concern. “ What exactly are they proposing, Tamsin? I’ve heard whispers that they want to break with tradition entirely to dismiss the old prognostics and our sacred duty in favor of a further combative approach. ”
A gruff voice cut in from across the table." They say that our inactivity has only served to strengthen the adversary," snarled Farren, his voice cracking." They say that we must act now, strongly, to bed out internal treason and defy the chaos head- on. It's as if they are crying out for a revolution within the castle walls."
Nalin shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes fixed on the fluttering candle." I understand they're angry," he rumored," but we've to be conservative. The vaticination and the business within our own species are disturbing enough, but to abandon all that we've erected could be disastrous. Our solidarity is our guard."
Tamsin breathed out a shriek, her voice shaking on the cusp of stopgap and despair." Our people suffer, Rever. They see our leaders — both old and new — floundering with secrets and deception. They cry out for change, an honest direction cutting through the fog of tone- deception. They tell us that our current line only deepens the fault lines that divide us."
Rever's aspect dropped to his fists, gripped in hard frustration." I have spent my life guarding this pack," he said sluggishly, his voice heavy with remorse and determination." But maybe I have come too careful, too unintentional to take extreme measures in the face of adding peril. However, also we must hear them out but with caution, If these new elders believe radical change is what we must have in order to survive."
Farren's eyes were ablaze with outrage." perceptiveness? Our men are empty for action! While you fritter your time down, the foe grows more important. What's your prudence also if it exposes us to those who would ruin us from the inside?
Nalin entered vocally," Farren, violence of no thought is just as dangerous. Our own internal conflicts formerly induce gossip. We must achieve a balance between bold leadership and the perception of our customs. We must n't let this body's unreasonableness serve as a wedge that splinters our solidarity.".
There was a simulated silence before Tamsin spoke to them again, her voice pulsing with honest conjuration." Rever, you led us all with your vision before — a vision of concinnity and of a unborn guided by the ancient prognostics. Can you still give that for us, indeed if that means embracing some of the change the new elders demand?"
Rever looked up, his expression both sad and bent ." I still believe in our participated heritage," he said still." But the times are different. The exposures about the vaticination, the substantiation of disloyalty among our own species they have shaken me to my core. I sweat that adhering too tightly to old ways without conforming may seal our doom. But I sweat also that abandoning our sacred ideals may cast us into lawlessness.".
Farren’s voice broke the silence with a sharp edge, “ You speak in mysteries again, Rever. We’re living in a time of extremity. Our people need clear answers and decisive action, not half- trueness and hesitance. ”
Rever's aspect stoned," I've no want to speak in dichotomies, Farren. I've a purpose to cover our people. And if the new party believes that it's only by shattering the established ways that we may rebuild, also they must see that destruction without agreement is no result at all. We must n't be careless in letting the internal strife give the entrance to the external adversaries."
Nalin went on," It seems to me that the new party is not inescapably our adversary but rather a symptom of our fear and query. They crave change because they're feeling betrayed and lost. However, maybe we can repair the crack before it spreads beyond the point of no return, If we can be honest with them about their enterprises.".
Tamsin jounced sluggishly." perhaps this is an occasion for us to review our values. perhaps the radical departure they offer is n't a rejection of the history, but an assignation to integrate new with our previous literacy. perhaps it's by combining the old and the new that we forge a path that honors our tradition and secures our future?
Rever's voice was soft but bent as he replied," That's the challenge we now face. I propose that we call a council meeting — a meeting of both the old guard and the new body. Let us have open discussion about our fears, our expedients, and our fancies for the future. Only through honest discussion can we hope to heal these fault lines.".
Farren strangled," And what if that just gives them further grist to tear us piecemeal? You and I both know that words are as murderous as blades in these times."
Nalin's tone was calm," Yes, but if we continue to let disharmony seethe in private, it'll erupt all the more catastrophically. Honesty, still painful, is our stylish chance at precluding farther division.".
Tamsin stood up," I agree with Nalin. Our people have a right to know that their voices matter. If we can show that we're willing to change — without losing the veritably substance of what we are — also hope and new solidarity can be the druthers to this fear that drives this revolutionist movement."
Rever looked around the room at the gathering of elders, his expression a admixture of sadness and determination. I understand the pain and wrathfulness that have led us to this call for radical metamorphosis," he spoke sluggishly." Our history has been marked by treason, and our present is filled with dubitation . But I supplicate of you all must we tear down in order to make again? Can we not, rather, mend the cracks of our concinnity with compassion, with minds and hearts open?
There was a murmur of uncertain assent from a many of the elders, but others changed cautious aesthetics ." Rever," Farren eventually said, his tone grudging but sincere," if you are convinced there is a middle path, also lead us there. But be advised our tolerance is thinning, and if our people are to emaciate under inactivity any longer, the call for change will come ever louder.".
Rever's eyes blazed with an inner honey as he replied," Let us also begin with a council — one in which we hear to the voices on both sides of this gulf. Pride and fear we must set away, and hear. The future of our pack hangs in the balance of our capability to change and not lose ourselves.".
Nalin intruded," We'll plan a secret meeting. There, only those most trusted by us will go, the bones who have shown unvarying commitment to our cause. Let us use this time to cut a new path of action that benefits both our holy prognostics and the critical need for it in these bloody times."
Tamsin spoke vocally but forcefully." I'll speak for the new body, and those who still cleave to the old. We must compromise, indeed if that means looking at some unpalatable trueness about ourselves and our leadership.".
Rever jounced, his expression stern." I'm set to hear to those trueness. Our heritage is n't one case of treason, but the opinions we make later. Let this council be the turning point — a time when we set aside our differences and unite for the benefit of our future.".
Farren’s tone, though still laced with dubitation , softened slightly. “ I’m not entirely vended, but if there’s indeed a chance to end this internal strife and cover our people, I’m willing to hear. Just flash back , conduct speak louder than words. ”
Rever's answer was subdued but establishment," also let our conduct be guided by our concinnity. We'll gather our leaders, make our grievances known, and seek a result that does n't farther divide us. Our pack is stronger united, and anyhow of how deep the fault lines run, we must learn to bridge them.".
As the elders who had assembled dispersed to arrange for the covert council meeting, Rever dallied, his studies burdened by the weight of responsibility. He knew the future that lay ahead was fraught with query and that the fragile thread of durability and extreme change was tenuously balanced. But at that moment, he set his mind forcefully to meet the impending tempest head- on with steely resoluteness.
Let us supplicate," Rever rumored to himself as he peered out at the star- filled night sky," that in our struggle to mend these broken faithfulness, we can forge a future where our participated heritage burns brighter than the murk of our history.".
