Chapter 99: Need A Moment

Chapter 99: Need A Moment
Alpha King Caspian's POV:

All of a sudden, as I was standing there in my chambers, I heard an unexpected knock at the door. Well, I guess I could go and see who it was. It's not like I was inappropriately dressed after all, despite being my pants being soaked.

However, when I reached the door, I opened it to find my Beta, Maxwell, standing there on the other side. The look on his face said it all when he saw me standing there dripping wet from the waist down. He even had to choke back a bit of laughter or two to keep from making it even more apparent what my current predicament was.

"Do you not have something better to do than laugh at my current situation?" I asked him, trying to use sarcasm in my voice as I stepped back away from the door, leaving it open for him to come on in if he so chose.

"Well, Your Highness," he said as he coughed several more times. He even tried to clear his throat in his attempt not to laugh openly. "I was merely trying to demonstrate what not to do in Your presence."

"Mmm... hmm...," I said in my response as I turned to walk back over to my dresser. As we walked together, I spoke softly, trying to keep conversation to a minimum so as not to disturb our Mate in the bathroom, since the door was still open. That's when I asked him, "What brings you here?"

"I am not sure how to tell you this, Your Highness, but there is evidence to believe that one of the captives that was brought back... very well may be a former pack member from our own nation," he said, using a tone he did not want to believe, even though he is the one who said it.

'Could it be? From how long ago, if that was the case? I don't think Beta would say it without being certain of it. Especially since he says the captive was a former member of ours?' (Cash asked inquisitively.)

"Has this been confirmed by others who may or may not know this individual?" I asked him, trying to appease my Wolf as well.

At that moment, I turned around to look over at Maxwell, and he took that as his cue to turn his head around as I was about to get changed. "Yes, Your Highness," he responded to me as he was pacing back and forth a bit, waiting for me to finish. "One of our members here did recognize him. He was also one of the returning members who brought back the captives as well."

He made sure to stay next to my door, turning his back to me so I could quickly change out of my sopping wet clothes, drying myself in the process so I could put on something dry.

After I had changed into my dry set of clothes, Beta Maxwell turned back around to face me, and that's when I asked him, "I assume you got this evidence if this is the case. Perhaps on video?"

"We did indeed, Your Highness. If you prefer, we can head straight over to your study so you can view this for yourself. I can have it set up in your study if you prefer that."

"Sure, we can do that, but I don't want to be gone all that long. Here, let us head there now so that we can give her some time to herself," I said as I headed straight over to the still open door. "Although, do keep in mind that I don't want to be gone all that long on the chance that she may need me again."

Just as I approached his position, he bowed his head down before me, and then we both walked out the door, him close on my heels. Before walking down the corridor, I turned to the guard's standing post just outside either side of my chamber and said, "I want you to come and inform me the moment this door opens. If you happen to hear anything inside, come and get me as well."

They both looked at each other before looking back at me, and at the same time, Beta Maxwell closed one of my open double doors to my chambers back as I continued to look between the two Warriors standing there at their post.

"Will do, Your Highness," they both spoke at the exact time.

Without saying anything else, Beta Maxwell and I started to proceed down the corridor to my study. I knew in the back of my mind that I didn't want to be gone all that long, for fear of our newly founded Mate needing something. Still, even if she needed me, I still wanted to give her a chance to have some time to herself. In the event that she did need me, all she had to do was go to the door, and my Warriors would come and get me immediately, as I was only right down the corridor.

No matter, I still needed a moment to get my mind off of her current condition and to discover the outcome of what Beta Maxwell had come to show me. I knew the alone time could do me some good, and I had only hoped it would give her a chance to look around at her surroundings as well.

Just as we reached the doorway of my study, I stopped walking as Beta Maxwell reached for the handle to open it and said, “Well, let's see this video of yours.”

We both walked in, and just as I headed over to sit behind my large desk, he headed to the opposite side to access the small laptop computer I had on top of it. It didn't take him long to log in and let the video start playing.

First, the screen was blank before I saw the image of the interior of the Holding Booth, the one with the small interrogation table with the secure link to the pole set there in the middle. Then, I saw a man who seemed to be older than I was, or so that's what he looked like.
"What did you say this captive's name is?" I asked as I knew the camera was getting set up on the stand, as I could see Beta Maxwell's shoulder in the lower corner of the screen.

"I didn't quite yet, Your Highness, but he did say his name was Hemming," Beta Maxwell told me as he took a seat in one of the chairs opposite my desk.

As I continued to sit there, looking at the computer screen, I couldn't help but notice that the man seemed to have a distinct personality trait. There was something about it, something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. You could just tell that this guy has secrets. A man like this can be dangerous, except that he wasn't from our own nation. However, I would still have to determine for myself the legality of this guy's story. Who was he, really? Traitor or not?
