Chapter 128: Leave Some Organs Behind
Benjamin was present, and they were at a disadvantage.
"I'm sorry for dropping by unannounced today," Kimberly said, wisely showing weakness before Benjamin could lash out.
She then turned to Sophia with a gentle smile. "Sophia, I'm sorry for startling you. I will make it up to you."
Sophia looked at Kimberly with disdain, a sneer of contempt on her lips.
Benjamin stepped forward, his tall and robust form like a dependable mountain, blocking Kimberly's view of Sophia.
"You offend my wife. You certainly should make amends! I wonder whether you'd prefer to leave behind a tongue or an eye as your apology."
As he spoke, his aura was filled with deadly intent. If it weren't for Sophia being there, and the inappropriateness of the setting, he would have strangled Kimberly and Charlotte on the spot.
Charlotte, terrified by Benjamin's words, hung her head, not daring to look at him.
While she was abroad, she had experienced those disgraceful incidents, and after many investigations, she learned they were Benjamin's doing.
Benjamin might appear to be a gentleman of clear character, but in reality, he was a devious schemer, using any means necessary to achieve his goals.
Kimberly, not so easily intimidated despite Benjamin's harsh and powerful demeanor, knew how much Benjamin valued Sophia.
If she could manipulate Sophia, she reasoned, she could control the situation.
"Sophia, my visit today wasn't entirely with bad intentions. I truly have something to trade with you, something you definitely want."
Sophia wasn't naive. She could tell Kimberly was trying to use her to escape.
She glanced at the bodyguards Benjamin had brought with him, each holding batons and looking even more fearsome than Kimberly's people.
A fight would not end well for Kimberly's side.
Involving the police would damage Kimberly's pride, something she valued highly.
So, the best strategy was to use her to make Benjamin calm things down and let them go.
But why would she help Kimberly?
She wished nothing more than for Kimberly, that wicked old witch, and Charlotte to get their comeuppance today.
Sophia stepped forward and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Benjamin.
Her shoulder brushed against his arm.
Benjamin glanced sideways at her, his usually icy gaze softening just a bit.
It was rare for her to willingly come close to him.
"Mrs. Roberts indeed has something I want."
Sophia chuckled lightly, mimicking Benjamin's sinister tone, "I wonder whether you'd prefer to leave behind a tongue or an eye."
Charlotte was scared of Benjamin but not Sophia.
Frustrated by Sophia's bold front, Charlotte was on the verge of exploding. She wanted to lash out and rip Sophia's hair out.
Kimberly quickly pulled back the impulsively storming Charlotte and shielded her.
Sophia's lips curled into a smirk as she dropped the blood-stained handkerchief.
"Kimberly, I despise those eyes of yours that only glare at me, and that mouth of yours that only insults my mother!"
Back when she was younger, Sophia hadn't dared stand up to Kimberly and Carter.
But now, things were different.
"You didn't even see Evelyn on her deathbed, what a pity, huh?" Kimberly suddenly changed the subject.
Sophia frowned, anger sparkling in her eyes, "You have no right to speak my mother's name!"
Kimberly lowered her eyelids, a calm smile on her face, "Sophia, your mother left you a keepsake when she passed."
Sophia's eyes widened with curiosity.
A keepsake from her mother?
"You're lying!" If there really was a keepsake, why hadn't Carter given it to her over all these years?
"Whether I'm lying or not, you'll know once you see the items," Kimberly said, watching Sophia's changing expressions, assured that she still cared about Evelyn.
Her smile grew more confident.
"However, if I lose an eye or a tongue here today, you'll never see your mother's keepsake."
Sophia's hands clenched at the sides of her camel-colored sweater dress, her bright eyes flickering.
Benjamin noticed her clenched fists, the tips of her fingers digging into her palms.
He reached out and wrapped his hands around her tense little fists.
"Arrest them," he commanded.
At his command, Benjamin's bodyguards with batons began to close in on Kimberly and Charlotte.
Both sides prepared for a confrontation.
"Let them go."
Sophia's soft voice reached Benjamin's ears.
Benjamin, surprised, looked down at Sophia, confusion evident in his dark eyes.
He leaned close to her small face, whispering near her ear, "You don't have to worry about them. I can help you get what you want."
Sophia's eyes were red, tears on the brink, and she was trying hard not to cry.
"Benjamin, it hurts..."
Benjamin's gaze dropped to the faint mark on her pale neck. Though the cut had stopped bleeding, it was unclear how deep it was.
Without hesitation, he scooped Sophia into his arms and coldly ordered, "Let them leave!"
The bodyguards looked at one another and stepped aside.
Kimberly breathed a sigh of relief and shot Sophia a cold glance.
Sophia mett Kimberly's gaze devoid of any expression.
Charlotte looked down, her gaze numbly fixed on a dessert fork lying next to the cake on the coffee table.
"Charlotte, let's go," Kimberly urged.
Charlotte was fueled by rage and jealousy.
Memories of her degradation were juxtaposed against the scene of Sophia being tenderly protected by Benjamin.
Why did she have to suffer while Sophia lived so joyfully?
In a fit of anger, Charlotte grabbed several forks from the coffee table and hurled them directly at Benjamin and Sophia.
Benjamin was heading toward the stairs, his back to Charlotte, but Sophia saw the forks flying towards them.
She instinctively lifted her arms around Benjamin's head.
"Watch out!"
