Chapter 92 Henry Made a Mistake
After Joanna went to work on Monday, she was swamped because there had been a multi-car pileup over the weekend. Many patients were brought in, and she was busy with surgeries, so she couldn't check on Sandra.
When she finally got a break, she had dinner with Angelo.
"To celebrate us securing the partnership, and to celebrate your divorce!" Angelo raised his glass of red wine with a charming smile.
Joanna smiled and clinked glasses with him. "Thank you! Now that the divorce is settled, I'll definitely work hard and help your hospital make money!"
Angelo laughed out loud. "The old you would have said 'save more patients.' How come now it's about helping me make money?"
He had many businesses under his name. Whether one hospital made money or lost it didn't affect his income.
Joanna laughed it off. "Well, I don't have much else to repay you with!"
Angelo's smile faded a bit as he became serious. "If you want to repay me, how about coming with me to an event? It's my mom's birthday. My dad is specially holding an auction, and the proceeds will be donated to charity for mountain areas."
"That's a great thing!" Joanna was about to agree.
Then she heard Angelo say, "But Cooper Corporation might send someone to this event. I'm not sure if it'll be your ex-husband Chris."
In the business world, these interactions were unavoidable.
Even though Angelo didn't want to work with Cooper Corporation, he couldn't make things too awkward on the surface.
And even if he didn't like Chris, he couldn't ask his parents to be cold to the Coopers either.
Joanna actually understood. After a brief hesitation, she declined Angelo's invitation. "Although you've helped me a lot, Angelo, we just saw each other last weekend and had an argument. I'm afraid if we meet at this auction, I might get into a fight with him and ruin the event."
"It's okay, I'll just go by myself then." Angelo smiled, a bit disappointed but not angry.
Joanna felt guilty and offered, "Even though I can't go in person, I'll definitely prepare a gift for Mrs. Smith! When the time comes, just let me know what kind of clothes Mrs. Smith likes."
Angelo was a bit surprised, but quickly remembered that Joanna had won first place in the Blue Ocean Design Contest and understood.
He suggested, "How about you design formal wear for the three of us for the event?"
"Sure!" Joanna agreed. "But I can't charge you. This is a gift to thank Angelo! If you insist on paying, I won't do it."
Besides the hospital patients and the competition piece for Mr. Stone's charity project, she did have time to design formal wear for Angelo's family.
Angelo smiled helplessly. "Alright then, thanks for your trouble, Joanna."
He was looking forward to wearing clothes designed by Joanna herself.
After dinner, Joanna bought flowers and went to the nursing home to visit Sandra.
She went to arrange the flowers as usual, but noticed that Sandra didn't seem very happy and often spaced out, not responding when called.
Joanna was worried and asked while Sandra was eating, "Mom, are you feeling unwell somewhere?"
Sandra hadn't decided whether to say anything yet, so she just shook her head. "I heard from Dr. Bruce that they're going to try new medication on me soon. I'm a bit worried."
"So that's what it is!" Joanna remembered she hadn't told Sandra about the trial medication yet, and quickly explained her thinking.
"I attended the symposium and truly believe in the research institute's capabilities. This new medication is very suitable for your condition, Mom, which is why I made the decision for you to try it. Please don't be angry."
Sandra shook her head. "You're doing everything for my health. How could I possibly blame you?"
"That's good! I was worried you'd be too conservative and afraid to try new medication." Joanna joked.
Seeing that Sandra had finished eating, she cleaned up the leftovers and brought water to wash Sandra's feet.
Watching Joanna care for her so devotedly, Sandra's nose tingled as she asked, "Joanna, do you remember the question I asked you last time? If your father really did something bad, what would you want me to do?"
Joanna paused and said, "I already answered you, Mom. Did you find out something?"
If the first time was just curiosity, then the second time... meant Sandra had really found some clues.
Joanna's intuition told her this was likely related to that suspicious project.
Sandra said with red eyes, "Your father has a project at the company that's been selling fake medicine in large quantities. I asked Byron to investigate, and there were several cases where people died. The project changed companies and managers several times, so the people who got caught each time were just scapegoats. Joanna, should I expose and report him?"
Joanna didn't expect that the truth behind Henry's project was like this!
Her expression changed as she stood up. "Mom, how did you find out about this project? You weren't involved, were you?"
Sandra pressed her lips together and showed her the photos on her phone. "Earlier, I knew you weren't doing well at the company, so I asked Byron to look into it. But Byron had already left the company and didn't know much. He told me there was indeed a project at the company that no one was working on, but it kept making profits. A few days ago, I went home and found these transaction records and contract documents in the safe."
And in this information, some were filled in with Sandra's name.
She hadn't signed these. Henry had used his authority as her husband to do evil things, signing contract after contract in her name.
Sandra didn't know whether she should report it. Once the matter was exposed, it wouldn't just be Henry going to prison, but herself as well.
Having caused so many deaths, whatever price Henry paid would be deserved, but Sandra wasn't ready to leave her children behind.
So she had been hesitating these past few days, not knowing what to do.
Joanna quickly scrolled through the photos. After finishing, she also fell silent.
She emptied the footbath, washed her face to calm down, then came back and helped Sandra onto the bed.
"Mom, I'll figure out these things. Just pretend you don't know. You've been in the hospital all these years, so we can find hospitalization records. The court won't hold you responsible. I'll consult with a lawyer and the company's management. Don't overthink it. I won't let you go down with Henry."
By the end, Joanna's voice was already trembling with fear and choking up.
No one expected that Henry's project had actually killed people and gotten this serious. Prison was inevitable!
But she needed to find a way to minimize the damage.
Leaving the hospital, Joanna immediately called Angelo. "Angelo, I might... need your help."
