Chapter 8
What's Angelo doing here?
Joanna's mind was a mess. She watched as Angelo calmly called security to clear out the reporters and escorted her all the way to his car.
She suddenly snapped back to reality, remembering her purpose. She said anxiously, "Thank you for saving me, but I came to find Sean. My brother's case needs him. I have to go now!"
Angelo was silent for a moment. "Sean already posted online that he's taking Cynthia's dog injury case."
He tapped on his screen and brought up the trending topic for Joanna to see.
Even though she already knew about this yesterday, Joanna couldn't help but feel hurt.
Chris had never once chosen her.
Between her and Cynthia, she was always the one being abandoned.
Fortunately, she had decided to get divorced.
She couldn't count on a man like this, and she shouldn't have any more expectations.
"Let me take you to the hospital to bandage that first," Angelo suddenly spoke.
His reminder made Joanna notice the scrape on her forehead. She put her hand behind her back. "It's just a little scratch, I can just slather some cream on it when I get home. Nothing serious."
"Joanna, you gotta take care of yourself! We're going to the hospital to treat your wound!"
"My brother's case is more urgent. Even without Sean, I need to find someone who can defend him first. Angelo, please let me out."
Chad's case needed a defense lawyer. Even if Sean wouldn't take it, there had to be other lawyers.
Angelo reached out and tapped the back of the passenger seat. "Peter, introduce yourself."
A head suddenly popped up from the front. "Miss Jones, my name is Peter Lauer. I'm a criminal case lawyer. Compared to Sean, I should be more suitable for you."
Joanna looked at that familiar face, so shocked she couldn't speak.
Peter had once defended a hit-and-run case and ultimately proved it was deliberate extortion by the other party. That case was very famous.
"With Peter here, your brother's case should have a better chance. Can you go to the hospital to get bandaged now?"
What was there to worry about? Joanna immediately nodded. "Peter, thank you so much. Let's exchange phone numbers first. I'll send you the case materials..."
After Chris finished discussing Cynthia's case with Sean, he couldn't help but ask about Joanna. "How is she? Did she leave safely?"
Sean pushed up his glasses. "When security arrived, she had already been rescued by a man."
Chris froze. A man? What man?
There were only two men in the Jones now: Chad, who was in detention, and Joanna's father, Henry.
But Chris knew that Henry would never rescue Joanna.
He immediately checked the surveillance footage. When he saw her being taken away by a handsome stranger, he was furious.
When did Joanna have a man like this around her?
Cynthia poured Chris a glass of water. "Chris, Joanna really seems to trust that friend. And he looks like he takes good care of her, so don't worry."
Hearing this, Chris got even angrier.
The moment someone else showed a little concern, Joanna went running to them!
"We're not even divorced yet, and she's already involved with another man. What does that look like!"
"Don't be angry. Joanna was probably just anxious about her brother's case and forgot herself for a moment." Cynthia seemed to comfort him, but was actually hinting that Joanna was having an affair with another man.
Sure enough, with her prompting, Chris got even angrier. Cynthia smiled slightly, her mood improving.
"If you were handling Chad's case, where would you start?" Chris asked Sean.
"I just looked into his case online. Good thing you didn't have me take it. That case is hard to win, especially with the family determined to extort money. But if we could get the bar's surveillance footage, we might be able to find evidence that the other party started the fight."
"Surveillance footage?" Chris pondered this.
Meanwhile, after getting her wound bandaged, Joanna heard the exact same response from Peter.
"Actually, there were a lot of customers at the bar. Someone must have seen what really happened. Right now, the other party is insisting that your brother started it, and they're focusing on the fact that someone died. If you want to save him, you can only get the surveillance footage and find witness testimony that's favorable to your brother."
"I understand. Thank you, Peter." Joanna was very grateful. "For your fee, I'm willing to pay double. Please do your best."
Peter chuckled. "You don't need to pay. Angelo already did."
Joanna was a bit surprised and turned to look at Angelo.
He shrugged, as if it didn't matter. "You already owe me so many favors, one more doesn't make a difference. Focus on solving your brother's situation first."
Joanna gripped her clothes tightly and said through gritted teeth, "I'll find a way to pay you back."
"I'll remember that." Angelo smiled.
"I'll contact the witnesses. Joanna, you can go to the bar and get the footage."
Joanna nodded. "Thank you, Peter."
Angelo had other things to do, so he dropped Joanna off at an intersection. He reminded her worriedly, "Call me if you run into trouble, especially things like what happened today."
After the car disappeared, Joanna immediately called Henry. "Dad, send me the address of the bar where Chad got into trouble. I got a lawyer named Peter. He said..."
Before she could finish, she was interrupted. "What Peter? Didn't I tell you to get Sean! Joanna, are you even taking your brother's situation seriously? If something happens to him, don't expect to live well either!"
She didn't sleep well last night, and after the scare just now, Joanna was wiped out. But she still tried to explain. "Peter is very famous. We couldn't even get near him normally."
But Henry didn't believe her. "That's just because you're useless! You can't handle even a small thing! Did you make Chris angry again? Didn't I tell you to beg him? How could you..."
Joanna didn't want to listen and hung up directly.
She searched online for related posts and finally found the bar's address under one topic.
Joanna didn't delay and immediately took a cab there.
But after she explained why she was there, the bar owner said, "Oh, you're too late. Someone already took the footage."
