Chapter 69 He Said, Let's Get a Divorce!
Chris was so angry he grabbed the pen, about to sign, but suddenly realizing this was exactly what Joanna wanted, he threw the pen down.
"Joanna, you think I'm stupid enough to let you provoke me into signing? I won't let you have your way!"
Joanna felt a bit disappointed that Chris had suddenly regained his composure.
Cynthia, standing nearby, seemed unwilling to give up. As if unable to control her emotions, she broke down crying: "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, it's all my fault. Miss Jones, please don't be mad at Mr. Cooper. If you can't accept this baby, I'll make him disappear. I won't let this ruin your relationship with Mr. Cooper!"
With that, Cynthia ran out before Chris could stop her.
Thinking about the baby in Cynthia's belly, Chris's face changed: "Joanna! This is all your fault. If Cynthia does something reckless because she's too emotional, I won't forgive you."
He turned and chased after her.
As Joanna put away the supplementary agreement, her numb heart felt a slight stir. Was she really... in the wrong?
Just as Joanna was hesitating whether to follow them, she suddenly heard someone shout: "Cynthia's going to jump!"
Her face changed, and she hurried outside with the other employees, watching helplessly as Cynthia stood at the highest point with Chris worriedly trying to talk her down.
Joanna suddenly smiled. Others might not see it, but she knew this was Cynthia's deliberate act.
With this jumping scene, it wouldn't be long before Chris came down and agreed to the divorce.
Having figured this out, Joanna wasn't in a hurry to leave anymore.
She went back to the lounge to wait. Before long, Chris passed by the lounge supporting Cynthia.
His suit jacket was already draped over Cynthia's shoulders. Faced with Cynthia's tears, Chris simply couldn't ignore her.
Fifteen minutes later, Chris walked in rubbing his temples. "Joanna, let's get divorced!"
Before Joanna could feel happy, he continued: "Cynthia still can't accept the idea of giving the baby to you to raise. She's pregnant now and emotionally unstable. I've always seen her as a sister, I can't just ignore her. But don't worry, this is just a fake divorce. After the baby is born, we'll remarry!"
Joanna directly pulled out the supplementary agreement for him to sign. As for Chris's talk of remarrying, her heart felt nothing.
Whether Chris wanted a fake divorce or a real one, as long as she successfully got the divorce certificate, whatever happened between him and Cynthia would be none of her business.
Chris quickly signed his name.
Joanna immediately took the supplementary agreement, confirmed everything was in order, and put it away.
"When are you free? We can go to the marriage registry office."
Now that she had both the divorce agreement and the supplementary terms, plus all that evidence of his affair, even if Chris dragged his feet about going to the registry office, she could still get divorced.
If the lawsuit process wasn't so long, requiring separation observation and other procedures, Joanna would have filed already.
Chris felt uncomfortable seeing her not upset at all: "What's the rush? I'm negotiating a company deal recently, I don't have time. When I'm free, I'll have Matthew notify you."
Joanna didn't believe him and said directly: "I'll arrange the schedule with Matthew myself. This time, Mr. Cooper, please don't stand me up again!"
With that, she left.
In the lounge, Chris downed a cup of coffee to soothe his throbbing headache.
Regarding Joanna's complete lack of anger after hearing about the fake divorce, while he felt somewhat relieved, he also felt vaguely uncomfortable.
Did Joanna not believe it was fake?
If the divorce went too smoothly later, would there still be a chance for him and Joanna to remarry?
Joanna left the building and took a cab home in a good mood.
Although the process today wasn't smooth, at least she got the supplementary agreement. Chris had proposed the fake divorce himself, and as long as he cooperated, getting the divorce certificate wouldn't be far off.
She felt today was truly a day worth celebrating.
That evening.
Nicole, hearing that Joanna had agreed to the divorce, was happily about to have the kitchen add a few more dishes.
But then Cynthia, clutching her belly, said weakly: "It's all my fault. I couldn't control my emotions today, and Chris signed the divorce agreement in anger. He even has to split half his assets. Auntie, go ahead and scold me."
Nicole didn't hear anything else. Upon learning Joanna was getting half the assets, she immediately raised her voice angrily: "What? She's getting half? What right does she have to take half? She's been married in for three years without even having a child, and she still wants to take half of Chris's assets! If you ask me, someone like that should leave with nothing."
Chris, who had been working in the study and only came out to get water, was pulled aside by Nicole.
After hearing Nicole's point, Chris just frowned: "Joanna and I are only getting a fake divorce. When we remarry later, those assets will still be mine."
"I don't agree!" Nicole said angrily. "Fake divorce, real divorce, whatever - once Joanna walks out of the Coopers' door, she shouldn't think about coming back! Cynthia is already carrying your child. If you don't marry her, are you going to let people laugh at her?"
Chris glanced at the pitiful Cynthia, felt his headache coming on, and irritably threw out: "The agreement is already signed anyway. I have a lot of work to do, stop bothering me with this!"
With that, all that remained was the sound of the study door slamming shut.
Nicole was so angry her chest kept heaving. The more she thought about it, the more upset she became: "Chris must be under Joanna's spell! He was reluctant to divorce before, and now that he's finally made up his mind, he's giving away so much money. We Coopers worked so hard for this - why should it go to an outsider?"
Cynthia patted Nicole's back to calm her down, soothing her: "Don't worry, they haven't gotten the divorce certificate yet, right? Even if Miss Jones divorces, she can only get assets under Chris's name. What belongs to the Coopers, she can't touch. Besides, if the woman's fault is greater, the marriage registry office will reassess the asset division ratio."
This reminded Nicole.
She said nothing more, already planning in her mind how to transfer Chris's assets.
Having achieved her goal, Cynthia touched her belly and smiled. She wouldn't let that bitch Joanna benefit.
These past couple days, Joanna went to work as usual. After work, when visiting Sandra, she took the initiative to suggest calling Henry.
Sandra was somewhat surprised: "You're willing to forgive your father? That's good. It's better to clear up misunderstandings sooner."
She happily dialed the number on her phone. At first, Henry's tone was impatient.
"What is it? If you're in the hospital and need money, ask Joanna. Don't think you're getting money from me!"
The smile on Sandra's face stiffened a bit, clearly disappointed, but she still chatted in a relaxed tone: "I'm doing fine. Joanna is taking care of me. She is your daughter after all, and doesn't want things between you two to get too tense. Okay, you two talk."
With that, the phone was in Joanna's hands.
She smiled and asked about Henry's health, then complained about the company being hard to manage, just like chatting with Chad.
"Dad, I can't find the employees in charge of so many projects. Last time I gave a project to Chad, he actually refused. I'm young and don't have many people I trust at the company. How about you help me out?"
