Chapter 33 Chad Wants to Kill
"If you're hungry, go eat!" Joanna didn't want to see Chris at all right now.
Just thinking about how generous Chris was to Cynthia while making things difficult for her, his legitimate wife, made her feel awful.
"You've got hands and feet, don't you? Can't you go to the hospital cafeteria or grab something yourself?" Her tone was sharp, completely different from her attitude this morning.
This sudden change made Chris uncomfortable. That unpleasant feeling came back again.
He held back his temper and warned, "Joanna, have you forgotten what you promised me? Do you want me to make trouble for your father?"
Joanna was sick of this threat. She didn't understand why Chris thought that after being exploited by Henry all this time, she still hadn't learned to fight back. Did he really think she had no temper?
"I haven't even gone after you for the money you spent on Cynthia during our marriage. You even gave her our newlywed house to live in. Chris, is there anything you wouldn't do?"
Chris was stunned for a moment. He hadn't expected Joanna to know about this.
As for Cynthia choosing that house, he initially felt there was no need to tell Joanna. After all, that house was sitting empty, and it was a gift from his mother—it had nothing to do with Joanna.
He didn't understand why Joanna was angry.
"It's just a house. Are you really that petty? Joanna, the value Cynthia brings to the company far exceeds one house. Can you stop being jealous? If you like, I can give you a house too, and you can let whoever you want live in it."
"I don't need it!" Joanna felt that Chris would probably never understand the real issue.
There was no point talking to him. Better to just avoid each other and stop fighting every day.
Seeing Joanna turn to leave, Chris got angry and reached out to grab her. But because of his tailbone spasm, he fell straight to the ground.
His face turned pale, his vision blurred, and he panicked. "Jo... Joanna..."
Joanna had taken two steps when she heard the sound of him falling. She turned around and saw Chris's pale face, which startled her. "What are you doing? I saw your test results—you're perfectly healthy..."
Chris couldn't hear her anymore.
He lost consciousness, not even remembering whether Joanna came back to take care of him.
She must have.
Joanna couldn't bear to see him sick. She would feel bad for him.
That feeling lingered until Chris woke up.
When he opened his eyes and saw Cynthia coming in with breakfast, his face immediately darkened. "Why is it you?"
The worry on Cynthia's face hadn't faded even after a whole night. "Chris, how could Joanna just refuse to take care of you when you're a patient? After you passed out, she went off on a date with another guy, left you with the nurses, and didn't even bother to check on you. She's unbelievable!"
After she finished speaking, Chris was silent for a long time.
His beliefs were somewhat shattered. Chris didn't want to admit it, but it seemed he was no longer the most important person in Joanna's heart.
Thinking about Joanna spending time with Angelo made Chris very uncomfortable. He irritably pounded the hospital bed.
Forget it!
So what if he was used to Joanna's care? He didn't believe he couldn't break the habit!
"Don't mention her," Chris said angrily. "Why did you come to the hospital?"
Cynthia smiled. "I told you yesterday the design work was done—just waiting for your signature and approval. But work isn't the most important thing right now. The doctor said you passed out from stomach cramps. You should eat something first."
Her thoughtfulness made Chris feel a bit better inside. "Yeah, thanks for your trouble."
Joanna had worked at the hospital without sleep for several days. After having dinner with Angelo yesterday, she finally had time to rest.
She didn't go to the hospital the next day and slept in.
But her phone kept vibrating. She glanced at it briefly—all unknown numbers, but all from Austin City.
Unknown calls this urgent to reach her could only be from those few people Joanna had blocked.
She wasn't planning to answer, but the next moment, the screen lit up with another call. Her hand slipped, and she accidentally answered.
"Joanna! Why took you so long? Were you waiting for your brother to die before picking up?"
As expected, it was Henry looking for her.
Joanna still remembered the drugging incident. Her eyes filled with resentment, and she asked coldly, "What is it?"
"Your brother is threatening to kill someone, and I can't stop him. You have to come back!" Henry's tone was urgent. He didn't bother explaining much to Joanna and went straight to threats. "If he kills someone and goes to prison, you'll have a brother in jail for the rest of your life. Good luck focusing on work after that!"
Chad wants to kill someone?
Joanna instantly became alert. She didn't dare gamble on that possibility, but she was also afraid it was another excuse from Henry to trap her, so she said, "Put Chad on the phone. Turn on the video so I can see!"
Though Henry was unhappy about being questioned by his daughter, he still turned on the video.
On screen, Chad was tearing the place apart, eyes wild, looking for a knife. He'd already broken everything he could. He kept yelling, "I'm gonna kill her! She cheated on me!"
Joanna frowned.
Seeing the video, her doubts disappeared.
Chad didn't have those kinds of acting skills. This meant he had really encountered a serious problem, which was why he was so emotional.
Joanna didn't dare delay and said directly, "Hold him back. I'll be right there."
Henry cursed and hung up the phone.
Joanna quickly changed clothes and headed over.
Thanks to the Coopers' help over the years, the Jones family lived in a decent house in the city center, which had been transferred to Chad's name early on.
Joanna hadn't been there in many years and almost couldn't find the place. She had to ask the security guard before finding it. After knocking, she waited cautiously at the door for a while.
Henry opened the door, but seeing she still wouldn't come in, he said impatiently, "What are you doing?"
Joanna said warily, "How do I know you're not trying to trick me again, using me to please Chris?"
"This time it's real!" Henry was very angry. "You're my daughter, and Chris is your husband. Don't talk like that!"
Just then, seeing the door open, Chad rushed straight toward it, scaring Henry into quickly closing the door again.
Henry and Joanna talked outside the door.
Joanna asked, "What exactly happened to him? Who cheated on him?"
Henry's face didn't look good. When he brought up this matter, he was so angry his body was shaking.
"It's that family who scammed us out of a million last time! That Judy isn't even pregnant with your brother's child! While she was with Chad, she was sleeping with someone else. Chad was played for a fool and gave them a million for nothing!"
