Chapter 122 Special Blood
Joanna was absolutely certain that Sandra had never been abroad before, so there was no way she could have met Victor overseas.
So where did this sense of familiarity come from?
"Could you be remembering wrong?" she offered as an explanation.
Sandra shook her head. "I don't think so. It's not like I hit my head and lost my memory. How could I not know whether I've met someone before?"
In the end, they discussed this question without reaching any conclusion.
Joanna didn't take it to heart. She still thought Sandra had remembered incorrectly.
People meet so many others in their lifetime. Sometimes even a face seen once on the street can feel familiar when encountered again.
Or perhaps Sandra, who used to love reading medical books and newspapers, had learned about Idris that way.
In short, there were too many possibilities. If they insisted on finding a definite answer, it would be very troublesome.
After comforting Sandra and seeing that break time was almost over, Joanna hurried back to her department to get busy.
Victor didn't stay in Austin City very long. Although he was looking forward to the new drug trial, current medical methods still couldn't cure Idris.
So after the inspection, he took Idris back to Valeria.
By the time Joanna found out, they had already left.
She could only ask Luke to deliver her gift.
After all, if it weren't for Victor's persistence and the research institute's development of the new drug, Sandra's condition might never have improved.
Before throwing herself completely into designing the charity work, Henry suddenly demanded to see her.
Joanna specifically picked a day off to visit the prison.
As soon as they met, Henry glared at Joanna viciously. "You got Chad arrested too? Joanna, are you trying to destroy this family? You ungrateful daughter, what kind of daughter does this? If word gets out, people will curse you to death!"
Joanna said calmly, "People finding out I have a father who disregards others' lives and sells fake medicine for profit—that's what would get me cursed to death. If you're just going to say useless things to scold me, don't bother. If there's nothing else, I'm leaving."
She felt Henry hadn't learned anything at all. He still thought what he did was right.
Seeing this result, Joanna was disappointed.
But Henry continued his twisted cursing: "Heartless bitch! If I'd known you'd ruin me and Chad, I should have strangled you at birth! Your mother's a useless waste too, just watching her own daughter send her husband and son to prison, turning a perfectly good family into chaos. Now she's enjoying being taken care of while not caring if we live or die?"
Joanna's face turned cold. She grabbed the water on the table and splashed it at Henry.
Then asked, "Have you calmed down?"
Henry gritted his teeth. No matter how much resentment he felt inside, he had to calm down first.
He finally stated his purpose: "Find a way to get Chad out. He's still young, he can't go to prison!"
Joanna asked coldly, "Why should I listen to you?"
"Unless you want your mother to die! I know a huge secret about her. Actually, your mother's illness can't be cured at all. There's something wrong with her blood. Even if the brain cancer can be controlled through surgery, her blood is very special. Not only can it not heal wounds properly, it's also extremely valuable. If you don't want your mother's blood to become known to those special black market industries, do as I say and get Chad out!"
Henry had thought about having Joanna get him out too.
But his crimes had been proven, and those lives required him to pay the debt.
Chad, on the other hand, just had a minor charge of embezzlement—he could easily be released.
He could die, but Chad had to live well, better than Joanna!
Joanna hadn't taken Henry's words seriously at first, but hearing the latter part, she became serious.
"Medical methods can't detect any problem with my mom's blood. Why would I believe you just saying it?"
Henry smiled viciously. "Because it's hereditary, it can't be detected! Joanna, aren't you curious why you've never met your grandfather or uncle?"
"What do you mean, my mom's parents are still alive?" Joanna pressed.
But Henry wouldn't say more.
His meaning was clear—he absolutely had to have Joanna get Chad out.
Otherwise, he wouldn't let Joanna have a comfortable life either!
Seeing his expression, Joanna knew she had pushed Henry to desperation.
She left the prison with a heavy heart and quickly returned to the nursing home, bringing Dr. Bruce to do blood tests on Sandra.
But the results showed normal type O blood.
Joanna asked hesitantly, "Dr. Bruce, do you know about special blood types?"
Dr. Bruce was somewhat surprised. "Actually, you already have the answer to this question in your heart, right? Special blood types are very difficult to detect with current technology. They look just like ordinary blood types, but carry different factors in the gene sequence. Once special blood is identified, it often comes with both benefits and risks, so many times our hospital keeps patients' blood conditions confidential, preferring not to detect them at all."
Joanna's mood instantly became melancholy.
She had thought Sandra's illness was getting better.
She never expected Henry to be hiding such a huge secret.
If she chose not to believe it, could Sandra really successfully recover after the third surgery?
Or, if Sandra's special blood was detected and attracted countless people's covetousness, would she and Sandra be unable to live in peace?
Either outcome seemed unacceptable to Joanna.
She asked Dr. Bruce, "Since you say special blood can't be detected, how is it determined to be special?"
Dr. Bruce explained, "It's not that it can't be detected at all. Out of a hundred tests, you might discover something different once, and then inform the person. I heard the Valeria research institute has been studying special blood detection. Maybe they'll invent detection equipment soon. Why is Miss Jones suddenly interested in this? Could it be your mother's blood type has a problem?"
Dr. Bruce wasn't stupid—he quickly guessed the reason.
But Joanna didn't dare admit it. She just smiled. "No, I just happened to read an article about special blood today and suddenly felt concerned. My mother's blood has been tested many times, hasn't it? You can put your doubts to rest, Dr. Bruce."
Dr. Bruce laughed a couple times, then went off to his work.
Joanna didn't know if he believed her. She could only worry alone.
She also asked Sandra, "Mom, I don't think I've ever heard you mention grandpa and grandma. Don't you remember them?"
Sandra's expression showed confusion for a few seconds, then she slowly shook her head.
"They were just ordinary farmers with many health problems, so they passed away early. Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
