Chapter 113: Showing Off
The delivery guy muttered a couple of complaints, clearly finding it troublesome.
Joanna quickly said, "I can give you a tip!"
Hearing about the tip, the delivery guy's attitude improved a lot.
Soon he sent over a photo.
When she saw the name, Joanna's whole body trembled.
It was actually Cynthia?
When did she come to this apartment, and she even took the divorce certificate!
After hanging up with the delivery guy, Joanna immediately called to question Cynthia.
She seemed busy - the first two calls didn't go through.
Joanna had to call Chris instead.
A cold, tired voice answered: "What is it?"
Joanna asked directly: "Did you have Cynthia take my divorce certificate? Chris, we both have copies of the divorce certificate. What are you trying to threaten me with by taking mine?"
Chris had just finished a meeting and tiredly rubbed his temples: "What divorce certificate? Did the marriage registry send it?"
Joanna froze.
So Chris hadn't seen the divorce certificate yet.
She was a bit speechless. "Yes! It was sent a few days ago, but my delivery was signed for by Cynthia. I called her but no one answered. You'd better ask her what exactly she's trying to do?"
"It's just a divorce certificate. She was just helping to receive it, maybe she forgot to tell you. Why are you so worked up?" Chris answered impatiently.
Joanna didn't believe it at all and didn't want to argue. She just said, "Then please have Mr. Cooper tell her to return my divorce certificate quickly!"
"Fine."
After hanging up, Chris had Matthew call Cynthia over.
Probably because the incident at the hotel last time had made Chris angry, Cynthia had returned to her career woman image and was busy at the company.
Nicole had been calling constantly these past few days, asking Chris to look after Cynthia more.
But Chris had been avoiding her and hadn't seen Cynthia.
When Cynthia heard the news, she got a bit excited and touched up her makeup before going over.
"Chris, did Mrs. Cooper say something to you again? Don't mind her, she's just worried something might happen to the baby, but I'm in great health, and the prenatal checkups always say everything's fine."
Chris looked up from his documents and glanced at her - she did look healthy.
He made a sound of acknowledgment and asked, "Were mine and Joanna's divorce certificates sent? Matthew said you signed for them?"
Cynthia pinched the flesh of her palm and said with a smile, "Yes, I happened to see it that day, so I signed for it. I was afraid you'd carelessly lose it, so I gave it to Mrs. Cooper to keep."
It's with Nicole?
Chris frowned slightly but didn't blame her.
He just asked, "Why did Joanna say you took her divorce certificate too?"
The two of them had chosen to have them mailed, but to different addresses.
How did Cynthia have time to go to Joanna's apartment and sign for her delivery?
Cynthia acted as if she'd just remembered this, slapping her forehead: "My fault, I forgot about that! At the time, Miss Jones and I had that unpleasant incident at the hotel, so I wanted to apologize. When I went there, I happened to run into the delivery guy, so I signed for it. But Miss Jones wasn't home at the time, so I had to bring the package back with me. Chris, did Miss Jones ask for it? I'll deliver it to her."
Chris had originally wanted to deliver it himself.
He didn't know why, but when he'd just received Joanna's call, his heart had actually leaped with joy.
He wanted to see her.
"Give it to me, I'm going to see a business partner in that area, I'll bring it to her."
Cynthia's smile became a bit stiff: "I should go instead. It definitely won't be convenient for you when meeting a business partner, and it might make them think your family situation is unstable and cancel the deal."
Chris wanted to insist, but Matthew walked over with a serious expression.
"Mr. Cooper, one of our medical aesthetics facilities has a serious reputation problem. Customer complaints are getting out of hand, and the shareholders want you to handle it."
The location was in the opposite direction.
Now it wasn't on the way anymore.
Chris felt annoyed and regretful inside, but could only say, "Then I'll have to trouble you to make the trip. She doesn't speak nicely, so just bear with it and don't upset yourself."
Cynthia lowered her head, her eyes looking wronged, but still forced a smile: "It's okay, I'm used to Miss Jones's attitude."
Chris suddenly felt a bit guilty.
Cynthia was an excellent girl who had endured a lot of grievances to be with him.
Perhaps he should pay more attention to Cynthia and stop letting Joanna draw his gaze away.
Maybe one day when Joanna saw how happy Cynthia was being pampered by him, she'd know regret.
Thinking this, Chris said, "I've booked a candlelit dinner for tonight, want to go together?"
"Yes! Chris, it's been so long since we've had a proper meal together."
Cynthia intimately moved closer and took Chris's arm.
Chris felt a bit uncomfortable but still let her hold on.
The two of them left the company together and only drove off separately when they reached the parking garage.
After Cynthia got in her car, her expression changed.
She lowered her head and touched her belly, a flash of viciousness crossing her eyes.
"Good baby, don't blame me. You don't want someone interfering with mommy and daddy's relationship later, right?"
Half an hour later.
Joanna received a call from Cynthia: "Miss Jones, I've brought your divorce certificate over for you, but for my personal safety, I won't come up. Let's meet at the coffee shop near your apartment."
Personal safety?
Joanna hadn't realized the problem yet, so she just changed clothes and went out.
When she arrived, Cynthia had already ordered coffee.
Seeing the ice cubes in the coffee, out of professional duty as a doctor, she still reminded her: "Pregnant women should avoid these cold things, they're not good for the baby."
Cynthia said with a smile, "It's fine. At home Chris watches me and won't let me drink it, but I've been craving it so much. Just one cup won't cause any problems. Miss Jones, help me keep it from Chris, okay~"
Her tone was very intimate and dependent on Chris.
Joanna felt stuffy inside but didn't say much more.
After all, she'd already given a kind reminder.
Anything more wasn't her business.
"Where's my divorce certificate? Chris said you kept it for me."
Cynthia blinked: "I didn't bring it. I left it at the old Hillside Villa. If Miss Jones isn't busy, you can come with me to get it."
Joanna frowned: "If you didn't bring it, why did you call me down to meet? Please have a servant deliver the divorce certificate to me, I won't go back there."
Cynthia casually took a sip of coffee and said, "What's the rush? I didn't say I wouldn't give it to you. I just wanted to invite Miss Jones to come get it with me. But if you don't want to go, then I'll just have to deliver it to you next time."
Joanna was confused now. "That thing is useless to you, there's no point in you keeping it. Cynthia, with the divorce certificate, Chris and I will have nothing to do with each other anymore, and I won't stand in the way of you two getting married. Why did you take it without permission?"
