Chapter 112 The Missing Divorce Certificate
After seeing Angelo off, Joanna went to bed early.
The next day, after finishing things at the hospital, she went to the police station to tell Chad about the compensation payment.
Chad was obviously excited, thinking she was there to get him released.
"Joanna, you have no reason to lock me up! The Jones company is partly mine too. Taking that money isn't a crime - it's my own money!"
He still showed no sign of remorse, which annoyed Joanna.
"All of Henry's shares have been transferred to me. Your shareholding percentage isn't even enough to attend shareholder meetings. Chad, what makes you think the company will ever come back to you?"
Chad's expression changed: "What do you mean? You sent Dad and me to jail just to fight for the company? Joanna, you're so heartless!"
Originally, Joanna just didn't want the Jones company to keep exploiting her value, which was why she took back the company.
She didn't care whether the company made money, whose name it was under, or who it made money for.
But Chad's words reminded her of something.
If she kept thinking this way, she would end up making money for Chad.
At this thought, Joanna's eyes became clearer. She said seriously: "I'm now the legal representative and shareholder of the company. Your shares only make you a shareholder. What you did was misappropriation of company funds, which can get you several years in prison. I have no intention of competing unfairly with the company, but look at yourselves - in the past few years when the company was in your and Dad's hands, it was almost always losing money. This shows you're completely unsuitable for managing the company! Now someone more suitable is managing it, and the dividends you can get are more than before. What's there to be unhappy about?"
Chad's face turned red, his eyes still full of resentment and unwillingness.
He didn't want to hear Joanna's reasoning.
All he knew was that something that belonged to him had been taken away by Joanna.
And Joanna showed no consideration for their past relationship, sending both him and Henry to jail!
"These are all excuses! You're just ambitious, upset that the family company went to me, so you had to come back and fight for the assets! Joanna, people will despise you. When I get out, I'm definitely going to sue you!"
Seeing that he still didn't understand, Joanna stopped explaining.
In her marriage with Chris, Joanna had learned a lot.
She wouldn't try to wake someone pretending to be asleep. Some people just want to live in their own world, so there's no point in trying to persuade them.
Joanna stood up from the visiting chair and left one final message: "I won't plead for you. For misappropriating company funds, whatever the court decides, you'll have to accept it. You never cared about Mom either. I'll take good care of her and get her treatment. As for the person who tricked you into taking the compensation money, they'll be in here with you soon enough!"
Although the money had already been spent, that person was also charged with fraud.
After serving their sentence, they would still have to pay back the full amount to Jones Corp.
Joanna came today just to see if Chad had any regrets.
Since he didn't, there was no need to save him. Better to let him stay in jail a while longer to reform properly.
With that, Joanna left.
She heard Chad cursing and kicking in the direction she left, but he was quickly taken away by the detention center police.
Walking out of the detention center, Joanna watched the people coming and going, feeling somewhat tired.
She had lived for twenty-seven years, but actually had very little affection in her life.
She thought having a new family would make things different, but it was still a mess.
Now, she could finally break free from all the people who drained her.
A new life was about to begin!
Over the next few days, Joanna kept going to the nursing home to check on her mother's recovery.
Fortunately, the new medication treatment was working well, and the success rate of the first batch of trial patients met expectations.
Grace General Hospital and the research institute launched an official promotional campaign for the drug.
News about the new drug's effectiveness and successful treatment cases was everywhere.
Many more patients came to the hospital for treatment.
Although it wasn't closely related to orthopedics, Joanna could still feel her colleagues' tired but joyful mood.
Another medical challenge had been solved, and more patients would be spared from suffering.
Joanna shuttled between the hospital and the nursing home, and when she had time, she worked on her design for the charity competition.
On a rare day off, she suddenly remembered that the divorce certificate still hadn't been delivered.
She checked the date and confirmed that a month had passed - it should have been delivered by now.
Joanna found the marriage registration office staff's phone number and asked about the divorce certificate delivery.
The answer surprised her: "The divorce certificate shows as delivered and signed for? But I didn't get any call or notice to pick it up. Was it sent to the wrong place?"
The staff member was also surprised and asked: "What address did Miss Jones leave? Could a friend have picked it up?"
The address Joanna left was, of course, her current studio apartment.
She didn't understand why this problem had occurred.
But the staff couldn't verify the specific situation and could only suggest she ask people around her, saying they would help contact the delivery person.
After hanging up, Joanna thought it over and could only think of Angelo.
So she went to knock on Angelo's door.
"Angelo, have you signed for any packages for me these past few days?"
Angelo had just washed his hair, and water droplets were still dripping from his hair into his casual clothes.
Joanna didn't dare look around and just waited for Angelo's answer.
"What? A package got lost? All my packages are sent to the company where my assistant signs for them. I never sign for anything at the apartment, so I haven't seen any packages for you." Angelo looked puzzled.
Joanna pressed her lips together, feeling somewhat defeated: "Sorry to bother you then. I'll ask the delivery person."
"Seems like an important package?" Angelo asked tentatively.
The divorce wasn't a secret anymore, so Joanna didn't hide it from him and directly told him about the missing divorce certificate.
Although this certificate wasn't really needed right now, she still felt she could only relax once she had it in hand.
"Find the delivery person's contact information and ask who signed for it. Even knowing whether it was a man or woman could help you find the divorce certificate faster." Angelo suggested.
Joanna nodded and didn't bother Angelo further, going to wait for the marriage registration office's call.
Before long, she finally got the delivery person's phone number and called.
The person spoke with some regional accent that was hard to understand.
Joanna had to listen several times before she understood: "You mean a woman signed for my package? Could you please check the delivery receipt and see whose name was signed?"
