Chapter 340
Chapter 340
"Wentworth, what are you doing?" Matilda had just finished showering and saw Wentworth looking at his phone, so she asked.
Wentworth said, "My car got hit today. I'm contacting the person who caused the accident."
"What? Are you okay?" she asked worriedly.
"Of course I'm fine, otherwise, would I be sitting here in one piece?"
"That's good. What about the car?"
"I dropped it off at the dealership."
Although Matilda used to drive too, she rarely dealt with insurance and only had a vague understanding of the process.
Matilda crawled over to him and put her arms around him. "Who was the driver?"
"A female colleague from work."
"She didn't do it on purpose, did she? Trying to chase after you?" Matilda asked instinctively.
Wentworth pulled her close and laughed. "Do you really think your husband has that much charm? That every woman in the world likes him?"
"I'm not that confident, but you do have quite a bit of charm," Matilda said.
"But I only belong to you."
"Cheesy." She leaned in and kissed him.
They fell back into each other's arms.
……
The next day.
Victoria sent Wentworth a WhatsApp message to arrange the damage assessment.
[Mr. Gonzaga, the damage assessment is at 11 AM today. Will you be available to come?]
Wentworth’s reply came a moment later: [Yes]
Victoria was thrilled. She immediately replied: [I'll wait for you then.]
While at work, Victoria found herself constantly glancing at her phone, almost making mistakes on the financial reports.
At 10:30, she immediately left the office.
Her office was on the same floor as Wentworth's, but separated by several rooms. She didn't feel comfortable going to get him directly, so she just sent a message: [I'm about to leave. Should I wait for you downstairs?]
Wentworth replied: [No need, just go there and wait.]
Victoria smiled to herself. Wentworth was deliberately avoiding suspicion now.
She took a cab to the assessment location and waited for quite a while, but instead of seeing Wentworth, she saw his secretary Leo.
"Ms. Jackman, Mr. Gonzaga asked me to come handle this for him."
"He's not coming?"
"He doesn't have time. He's been in meetings."
A flush of embarrassment heated Victoria’s cheeks; she felt like a fool.
She wasn't sure if Wentworth did it on purpose.
But she didn't dare say anything. She just processed the compensation agreement with Leo. When they finished, she quickly asked Leo, "Did you drive here? Would you mind giving me a ride back? My car is still being repaired, so I probably won't have a car for a while."
Leo quickly said, "I took a cab here too."
"Then let's share a cab back. I'll call one now."
In the ride-share, Victoria asked Leo, "Mr. Gonzaga must be pretty busy right now, right? Is he busy with the eastern development project, or something else? I noticed he's been asking for financial data on that lately."
Leo was already 30. Being Wentworth's secretary meant he wasn't new to the workplace.
"How would I know what the boss is up to? I'm just someone who runs errands."
"Oh, I was just seeing if I could help you guys with anything. I can't do much else, but I can crunch numbers."
Leo didn't respond to that.
Leo had once run into Victoria getting into Colin's car on the street.
It's normal for colleagues to give each other rides, but Victoria got in the passenger seat, and after getting in, she casually pulled down the mirror to touch up her makeup. If there wasn't something going on, he absolutely wouldn't believe it.
Seeing that Leo seemed to be guarding against her, Victoria didn't say more.
Back at the office, she opened WhatsApp, found Wentworth's profile, and thought about what to say to him.
[Mr. Gonzaga, the car insurance claim is all done. Did Leo tell you?]
[Mr. Gonzaga, I'm really sorry. Because I hit your car, it's caused you inconvenience. How about I treat you to dinner?]
She typed and deleted, feeling it was too deliberate.
Seeing that it was almost time to get off work, she simply sent: [Mr. Gonzaga, let me treat you to lunch.]
But she found she couldn't send it. There was an exclamation mark in front of the message—she needed to add him as a friend again.
Wentworth had blocked her!
Victoria immediately deflated like a punctured balloon.
……
Since becoming friends with Jade, Edison had mostly gotten over the gloom of his divorce.
Edison had always liked mature, sophisticated women. Jade had been divorced and experienced betrayal, making her not only mature but also full of charm.
Today, Edison and Jade had arranged to have lunch together again.
Although they spent a lot of time together, it was limited to eating, chatting, and having drinks. They hadn't officially gotten together—they hadn't even held hands.
After they sat down at the restaurant, Edison looked at the menu.
There were dishes he liked—grilled fish and pork ribs.
But he was conflicted.
When he was with Lydia before, she often reminded him to lose weight. Back then, he was naive, thinking that if a woman loved him, she should love all of him.
Later, when Lydia cheated with Ronald, he realized that if someone doesn't look good, they just don't look good. Fat is fat. It's like the same dish—elegant plating can sell for double the price, while rough and cheap presentation is just home cooking.
"Why aren't you ordering?" Jade asked him.
"You order," Edison handed her the menu.
"You order. You're a foodie, you definitely know which dishes are good."
Edison said, "I'm watching my weight."
"Afraid of what? You're already pretty fat, aren't you?" Jade asked.
Edison said, "I'm afraid if I get fatter, I won't be able to find a wife in the future."
Jade burst out laughing.
"How could you not find a wife? You don't rely on looks. Your family has money. If this were the old days, you could marry twenty wives just based on that."
Hearing Jade's tone, Edison knew she hadn't actually fallen for him.
If she had, she wouldn't joke about these things.
So he was just someone to keep Jade company after her divorce.
Jade said, "If you won't order, I will."
She called the waiter over and ordered five dishes, all signature items.
Although the portions were small, five dishes for two people was definitely a lot.
Edison asked, "Why order so much?"
Jade laughed and said, "I'm afraid you won't have enough to eat. Stop worrying about getting fat. Eating well is what matters."
Edison suddenly felt a bit sad.
Jade really didn't care about him. She just saw him as a friend, a chubby, silly big guy.
Edison suddenly said, "I'll just have some vegetables."
"Why? You need to eat meat, otherwise you'll be hungry."
Edison said stubbornly, "I want to lose weight."
Jade laughed, "Lose what weight? Being chubby is cute."
"Being too fat affects your health."
"Don't listen to those experts talking nonsense. People only live a few decades where they can eat well, and they all promote light eating. What a waste."
"Really, being too fat can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar, especially for someone like me," Edison said.
It was strange—before, when Lydia told him to lose weight, he was always indifferent. But in front of Jade, he suddenly felt his former self had been too immature.
