Chapter 337
Chapter 337
"Y-you should remarry Tristan."
Britney was so shocked by Mrs. Lang's words that she started trembling. Was this old woman really this shameless?
"What makes you think I'd remarry Tristan? Let me tell you straight - I'm pregnant with someone else's child."
“I know,” Mrs. Lang replied, unfazed. “Have the baby. I’ll help raise it. We’ll simply tell everyone it’s yours and Tristan’s.”
Britney felt her entire worldview shaking and shattering: "Didn't Tristan's cousin get pregnant with his child? Wait, it's not his?"
Mrs. Lang looked ashamed: "It's not his. That little tramp actually lied to me."
Just as she thought.
Britney knew it was Tristan's problem, not hers.
"Since there's already a baby and Tristan can't have kids, why don't you just have Tristan raise that child as his own? You're relatives anyway - wouldn't that be even better?"
Mrs. Lang said bitterly: "No way. That little tramp Gloria is carrying some guy from her hometown - he does odd jobs at construction sites and can barely read. How good could a child from him be? Better to raise yours. You're educated, so your child won't turn out bad. It'll be easier to raise too."
Britney clenched her fists tightly. She couldn't believe someone could be this shameless!
Britney said, "This child isn't just mine. The father gets a say too."
She already knew that Matilda had warned Mrs. Lang using the child's father.
Mrs. Lang thought of the photos Matilda had shown her and shuddered. Still, she gathered her courage. "But I heard the baby's father is a thug. Can someone like that last? He won't be with you forever - he'll dump you sooner or later."
“And if he’s a thug, aren’t you worried the baby might take after him?” Britney shot back, exasperated.
"That works out perfectly - my Tristan was in the military. He's trained to handle thugs."
Britney took out her phone, pretending to call Sun. "Honey, my ex-husband's mom came to see me. She wants me to remarry my ex... You're coming over now? You want to teach her a lesson? No, don't---I'm afraid you'll actually hurt someone..."
Mrs. Lang was terrified. Before Britney could say more, she said, "I'm leaving, I'm leaving right now, okay?"
After Mrs. Lang left, Britney put down her phone, still furious.
How shameless!
She had planned to keep Sun at a distance a little longer, but that visit changed everything. She would go home with him after all.
...
Britney quickly took time off and went back to her hometown with Sun.
Her hometown was in a small county town. Her mother had passed away, and she still had a father and an older brother. Her brother was already married with kids. Her father usually handled picking up and dropping off his grandson from school and did things like grocery shopping at home.
Her father and brother knew she was divorced. At the time, since they'd heard it was because Britney couldn't have children, the family had nothing to say and accepted this loss. But now hearing that Britney was pregnant and had found a man several years younger than her, they were surprised.
They eyed Sun with open suspicion, clearly wondering if he was another unreliable drifter.
When Sun arrived at Britney's home, he changed from his usual lazy, quiet self. He bought cigarettes and alcohol for Britney's father Mr. Woolf, choosing expensive ones, and also bought gifts for Britney's brother, sister-in-law, and niece and nephew, leaving the whole family with nothing to criticize.
Later, after Sun stepped out, Mr. Woolf pulled Britney aside. “Be honest with me. Is this young man truly reliable?”
Britney looked up at the sky, then slowly said,: "Whether he's reliable or not needs time to prove. We all thought Tristan was very reliable back then, but didn't he fail to stand the test of time?"
Mr. Woolf sighed and said to Britney, "Your mom died early, and in the beginning you had to send money home for her treatment. Life was just getting better, and now you're divorced. You've really suffered. You're a college graduate, the most educated in the family. I trust you have your own thoughts and judgment. You can marry whoever you want, but if you're ever wronged, you must tell the family. I'll risk my old life to stand up for you."
Britney smiled, "Thanks, Dad."
After staying home for two days, they flew to Sun's home.
To Britney's surprise, Sun's family wasn't poor at all. The quiet, guitar-playing bar singer came from comfortable roots. Since middle school, he had chased music instead of academics.
And Sun had pretty open-minded parents who respected his interests and hobbies, but they had one requirement: he had to make it on his own, and if he couldn't, he shouldn't come back to mooch off them. That's why Sun didn't keep in touch with his family much.
Sun's family had two apartments in the city - not some small county town, so the properties were very valuable. They were large flats, about 3,000 square feet. Sun's bedroom alone was 300 square feet with its own bathroom.
Britney thought, no wonder Sun had such a good personality. He could sing at bars every day and still remain humble and emotionally stable. He must have been well-raised from childhood.
When they met Britney, Sun's parents were very warm. Knowing she was pregnant, they'd prepared new slippers and new pajamas early on. The coffee table was full of kiwis, blueberries, and nuts suitable for pregnant women.
Sun's mom Mrs. Ovens even joked. "Samuel told us you're a few years older than him. I thought you'd be much older, but looking at you now, you're not old at all. People who don't know might even think you're younger than Samuel."
Britney blushed, recognizing the kind flattery. Sun’s real name—Samuel—still felt formal to her ears.
Mrs. Ovens continued and said, "Samuel said you're a doctor. Being a doctor requires advanced education. It's really his luck that you'd choose this brat."
Britney laughed, "Mrs. Ovens, please stop praising me. Any more and I'll get a big head."
"Don't get a big head---we're counting on you to keep this kid in line."
Britney said, "Sun is actually very sensible and good at taking care of people."
Sun groaned, covering his face. “Can you two please stop? I’m dying of embarrassment over here. Let’s just eat!”
"Okay, okay."
They took Britney to eat local specialties. During the meal, Mr. and Mrs. Ovens couldn't help but complain about him.
"This kid was really asking for it when he was little. In elementary school, he and some friends competed to see whose dad had the smelliest feet. To prove his dad's feet were the smelliest, he invited his friends over to take turns smelling his dad's stinky feet..."
Britney laughed so hard her sides hurt.
