Chapter 335
Chapter 335
Tristan shouted again, "I said, nobody goes!"
He rarely raises his voice at home, so the outburst left both Mrs. Lang and Gloria speechless — Gloria even dropped her apple in fright.
"Tristan, what's gotten into you? Gloria is pregnant! What if you harm my grandchild?"
Tristan looked over at Gloria, his eyes cold as ice.
Gloria was so scared, she stumbled back two steps.
Mrs. Lang immediately stood up for Gloria, putting her arm around her waist and glaring at Tristan. "Don't you dare mistreat Gloria just because you saw Britney for five minutes. After the divorce, weren't you the one sleeping in Gloria's arms every single night? Don't think I don't know."
Tristan said nothing. He turned and walked straight to his study.
Gloria let out a breath of relief, then put on a pitiful face and cried on Mrs. Lang's arms. "Mom, Tristan must be disgusted with me now. What am I supposed to do?"
Mrs. Lang comforted her. "Don't worry, I'm here. As long as I'm alive, he won't dare mistreat you. Besides, you're carrying my grandchild. Once that baby is born, Tristan will make sure you're taken care of for the rest of your life — for the child's sake."
Gloria wiped her tears and looked at Mrs. Lang gratefully. "Mom, I don't know what I'd do without you."
……
The next day, Tristan said he was heading back to the base. He left with just a bag on his back, without saying a word to Gloria.
The moment he was gone, Gloria started complaining to Mrs. Lang again. "He left without even saying goodbye. What if he didn't actually go back to the base? What if he's off somewhere doing something else?"
Mrs. Lang waved it off. "How could that be? Tristan has always been serious about his career. If he's not going back to base, what's he going to do — go out and mess around? Just relax."
Gloria's eyes darted around. "Mom, wasn't Britney always unable to get pregnant before? But yesterday at the hospital, I heard she's pregnant now. How did she find a man so fast?"
Mrs. Lang slapped her thigh. "I always knew she was no good. When she ran off and moved into the dorms, I said she had to be seeing someone on the side. Tristan was never home — there's no way she just sat around waiting. She probably had someone lined up long before."
"But Tristan loves her. The moment he heard she was pregnant, he went pale. He clearly can't let her go."
Mrs. Lang clenched her hands. "I want to see exactly what kind of man this Britney has found."
……
When Matilda arrived at the hospital that morning, she spotted an old woman standing outside the outpatient building, looking around.
She felt a flicker of recognition, and then it hit her — wasn't that Britney's ex-mother-in-law? She knew firsthand how nasty that woman could be.
What's this old witch up to now?
Matilda quickly took a photo and sent it to Britney, telling her not to come through the main entrance.
Britney had just arrived at the hospital too, but she'd come through the staff motorcycle entrance, which didn't go past the main gate.
She'd ridden over on Sun's motorcycle.
It was a seriously cool bike — heads turned whenever it went down the street. Britney had found it too flashy at first, but after a few rides, she had to admit it was exciting.
She parked the bike and handed the helmet back to Sun. "I'm here."
Sun kissed her. "Work hard. No slacking."
"When have I ever slacked off?" Britney laughed.
Lately Sun talked to her like he was coaxing a little kid.
"I'll be home waiting for you."
"Okay!" Britney was worried someone might see, so she didn't kiss him back.
Sun had just left when she took out her phone and saw the photo Matilda had sent. Her expression darkened.
They were already divorced. What was that woman doing here?
But she was pregnant now, and Matilda was right — better to avoid any direct confrontation. She didn't need the stress affecting the baby.
She wasn't going to waste time picturing Mrs. Lang's face either. She'd heard that if you kept thinking about ugly people during pregnancy, your baby would come out ugly.
Whatever. Time to go to the clinic.
In the outpatient building, Matilda walked up to Mrs. Lang with a friendly smile. "Oh, aren't you Britney's ex-mother-in-law?"
Mrs. Lang looked at her and recognized her immediately.
Matilda was the kind of face you couldn't forget — stunning, with a voice like honey.
"I'm waiting for someone!" Mrs. Lang said.
"You're waiting for Britney, aren't you?" Matilda asked.
"None of your business."
Matilda put on an indignant look. "I told Britney early on not to divorce Tristan, but she wouldn't listen. See? Now she's lost such a wonderful mother-in-law."
Mrs. Lang looked at her, puzzled. "Aren't you her close friend? Why are you saying nice things about me?"
"I'm not blind. I can tell who's good and who isn't. Britney just doesn't know a good thing when she sees it — that's why her life has turned out the way it has."
"Her life? What do you mean?"
"You don't know? She's... ugh, I don't even want to get into it. Ever since she divorced your son, she's been hanging around with a bad crowd. Let me show you some photos."
Mrs. Lang's interest was piqued. "Let me see."
Matilda pulled up a photo of Britney at a bar. "After the divorce, Britney started running with a rough crowd. See all the tattoos? This one here is her current boyfriend. And this scary-looking one — he's a well-known troublemaker. I said a few things to Britney one day, and his crew ambushed me on the street. If a police officer hadn't happened to walk by, I don't know what would've happened to me."
"Really?" Mrs. Lang shuddered at the thought.
"And there's more. Look at these." Matilda pulled up photos of Rooster's crew.
Chamberlain had sent them to her. Rooster and his friends were dressed in outrageous costumes, filming a goofy video where they played gangster bosses.
"See these guys? They're all part of her circle now — street people. Anyone who crosses Britney might find themselves getting jumped in a dark alley at night. The police can't even touch them — they've got connections inside the force. You'd be the one who ends up losing."
Mrs. Lang stared at Matilda. "You're not making this up, are you?"
Matilda smiled. "Why would I do such? If you don't believe me, go ahead and cause a scene. Just don't say I didn't warn you."
With that, Matilda turned and walked back into the building.
Mrs. Lang stood frozen outside, not sure whether to go in or leave. She stood there for about ten minutes, then finally slunk away.
……
At that moment, Tristan had not gone back to the base.
He'd only returned to the military compound — the apartment there hadn't been handed back yet.
He slept there at night and spent his days staking out the area near the hospital.
