Jensen’s POV
“What’s your mom’s name?” I asked curiously. Jessie seemed innocent to me. A person who has an innocent character tells the truth. That’s what I knew.
“Megan. But, since we met, I’ve been thinking that maybe Megan isn’t my biological mom. I’m so confused. What do you think I should do?” she asked. She looked like a confused person. Women are easily confused.
“Just answer all my questions first, then I’ll tell you the way out. You don’t need to be confused. I also want to know the truth,” I replied, trying to calm her down.
“Oh well. Please ask what you want to know,” she said. She was cute and obedient. I liked her.
“Megan is my mom’s cousin. So, does she treat you well? Think well,” I asked.
She paused and seemed to think hard. Then she shook her head. I let out a quick breath. “I guessed it. Does she behave well when you’re around your dad?”
She nodded twice.
“I guessed it. So, are your dad and Megan married?” I asked.
“Shouldn’t you call her Aunt Megan?” she asked, biting her nails. The same habit as Mom.
“You should call my mom Aunt Piper too,” I retorted.
“No, not Aunt Piper but Mom,” she replied with a smile. Her smile was beautiful and her face looked radiant. She must be my little sister. We have the same eye color and hair color. Our faces are similar too. It’s too mysterious.
Mom once told me that Aunt Megan and her mother had been bad to Mom, so they kicked Mom and Grandma out of my great-grandmother’s mansion. The conclusion was that Aunt Megan was someone to watch out for, and she must have been sneaky enough to do this. It made me curious.
“Hey, why are you quiet?” Jessie asked.
I gave her a sharp look. “So, is your dad married to Megan?”
“I don’t know.”
“So, what do you know? It’s giving me a headache. Can you find out?” I asked. I have high hopes for you, Jessie.
“Hmm, I think so. Take it easy. Then, what’s my duty?” she asked. Somehow, I wasn’t sure if she could do what I asked.
“Do you doubt me?” she asked as she looked into my eyes.
“Yes. Ok, sorry. I’ll try to trust you, but don’t let anyone know about this. Ok?” I asked. Although I was worried, there was no other way. We had to work together.
“Of course. Now tell me what to do?” she asked.
“Take a sample of your father’s hair, then yours. Put it in a safe container. After that, give the sample to me. Then, find out about the marital status between your dad and Megan. For everything else, wait for further orders from me. Understood?” I asked.
“Okay. I envy you,” she said with a sad look on her face. Her face looked down at the floor. Her fingers were moving in an uncertain direction.
“Seriously. You’re jealous of me? You’re a rich kid and you never feel deprived of anything. We used to eat only one meal a day when Mom couldn’t find a job. Now we’re much better off,” I replied as I invited her to sit in a chair.
We both sat and stared at the volleyball court right in front of us. She was quiet and didn’t respond.
“I wish I had a mom like Piper. My mom and dad are rarely home. I do a lot of things accompanied by Lily, the assistant in our house. So, I was lonely. Mom hardly ever hugs or kisses me. Aren’t you much luckier?” she replied.
I didn’t know she was that miserable. Although my mom, grandma, and I lived in poverty, I never lacked love. I had a warm and caring family. Jessie must have suffered a lot. We were both suffering.
“Hopefully, the tests I’m going to do on the hair samples will give the results I’m hoping for. It’s just that I’m not sure if your dad is a good man.”
“What? He’s a good man, handsome and rich,” Jessie replied.
“Yes, he is rich. Then why hasn’t he been looking for me and Mom all this time?” I asked as I looked into Jessie’s eyes, which were the same color as mine.
“I didn’t even know that Piper had a son who looked like me. Maybe my dad doesn’t know about it either. Let’s find out,” she invited.
“Let me find out. You can just be an informant. Oh yeah, what’s your cell phone number? Let’s communicate with each other,” I asked. Then, we exchanged cell phone numbers.
“Looks like we’ve been outside for too long. Now let’s go back to the main hall before Mom goes around looking for us all over the school,” I said.
So, we rushed to the main hall. When I got there, I saw Mom and Grandma still sitting in the audience seats, talking. When they saw us coming, they immediately took us to a nearby restaurant.
Arriving at the restaurant, Mom explained everything, even though she didn’t know the truth. We all had the same question as her. So, who was my twin sister named Daisy? Was it possible that Aunt Megan had a hand in all this?
From Mom’s story, it seemed like Jessie’s dad already knew about this. If we met, then what should I do? What would I say? For six years we lived without him, of course. Now it would be much more difficult for me and Mom to accept his presence. However, I was happy enough to know that I had a father. I thought he had died just like Mom had said.
After the restaurant, a man named Ken, whom I had met some time ago, came to pick us up. He kept looking at me while smiling. He seemed to have figured something out. I had to ask Jessie to move faster.
Later that night, when everyone was asleep. I sent a message to Jessie.
“Jessie, are you asleep?” I asked in a text message.
Five minutes later, she replied, “Not yet. But, it’s late. Kids our age should be asleep.”
“Did you get the hair sample as I told you to?” I asked.
“I did.”
“Good. Then, do you know the marital status of your mom and dad?” I asked.
“Yes, I do. But, I won’t tell you via text message. I’ll tell you tomorrow when we meet. Where will we meet? You are going to test the DNA of the four of us, right? My dad has a famous doctor friend at a private hospital. I’ll take you to see him tomorrow. I’m sure he can help us,” Jessie said.
“Okay. Then I’ll see you tomorrow. I’m already very sleepy,” I said as I ended our conversation.
The next day, Jessie picked me up, and we rushed to the hospital with hair samples from Jessie’s dad, Jessie, Mom, and me.
