Chapter 126: The Bayonne Gate
Chapter 126: The Bayonne Gate
Leon slammed the steering wheel hard to the left, ice-slush spraying against the chain-link fence. The heavy utility truck skidded to a halt, blocking the narrow exit lane of the Bayonne depot. Through the cracked windshield, two black federal sedans were already pulling sideways across the main road.
"They're moving on the lead tanker," Dante said, pulling a heavy iron crowbar from beneath his seat. He kicked his door open into the freezing sleet before the truck had completely stopped vibrating. "Two investigators are out of the cars with clipboards, and the trailing guys have their hands inside their coats."
Aria unbuckled her seatbelt and dropped from the passenger side, her boots hitting the wet gravel with a hard crunch. "Leon, don't let them touch the driver's cabin interface. The mesh tokens are still syncing inside the glovebox."
Leon was already out, his massive frame cutting through the gray mist as he rounded the hood of the truck. He didn't draw his weapon, but his shoulder muscles were tightly coiled beneath his dark work jacket. He stepped directly between the lead Treasury investigator and the driver’s side door of the fuel tanker.
"Step back from the vehicle," the lead investigator shouted, his badge flashing in the dull afternoon light. He didn't drop his clipboard, but his partner moved to his flank, hand resting flat on a holster. "This terminal is under an administrative inspection order from the Department of the Treasury."
"The driver has an emergency municipal routing ticket," Aria said, walking straight up to the investigator without slowing her pace. She thrust a laminated transit sheet directly over his clipboard, forcing him to look down at the official stamp. "This fuel is designated for the Bronx public housing cooperatives under the winter emergency protocol."
The investigator glanced at the paper, his mouth twisting into a tight, hard line as he looked back up at her. "I don't care about your heating coupons, lady, because the cash velocity reports for this entire zip code just flatlined. We’re impounding the truck's digital log until we verify the transaction routing."
"You touch that log," Leon said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that made the driver inside the cab look down in terror, "and you're violating a state-mandated public utility transport during a weather freeze. That's a class-one obstruction charge, and the local port police will have you in cuffs before your supervisor clears the line."
The second investigator stepped forward, his face flushing red under his cap as his hand twitched closer to his belt. "Is that a threat, mister? Because we have federal marshals exactly five minutes down the highway."
"It's a clock," Dante shouted from the back of the tanker, where he was intentionally loud as he slammed his crowbar against a steel pressure valve. The loud clang echoed across the concrete yard, drawing the attention of three yard workers who immediately stopped their tasks. "The local police cruiser is parked at the intersection right behind your sedans, boys."
The lead investigator turned his head, his eyes tracking the blue flashing lights that had just appeared through the freezing fog at the edge of the industrial park. Aria had timed the automated municipal dispatch perfectly; the local precinct had received the emergency route notification ten minutes ago.
"This isn't finished, De Luca," the investigator spat, snatching the laminated paper from Aria’s hand and tossing it back at her chest. He turned on his heel, waving his partner back toward the idling black sedans. "We can trace the fuel delivery points just as easily as the bank accounts."
"The trucks are already empty by the time you get there," Aria said to his back, her voice entirely flat as she watched them retreat. She turned to Leon, nodding toward the cab. "Get the driver moving before the port police start asking for trip logs."
Leon hit the side of the tanker with the flat of his hand, signaling the driver to punch the gas. The massive diesel engine roared to life, spewing a thick cloud of black exhaust into the mist as it rolled past the clearing gates and swung north toward the highway.
