Chapter 99 The Part Nobody knew

Chapter 99 The Part Nobody knew

An oppressive silence filled the observatory.

—

No one moved or breathed property.

—

Charles stared at Victor like the world itself had just tilted wrong beneath him.

“No.”

The word came out instantly.

By instinct.

—

Victor held the flash drive with an unsettling calmness.

“Yes.”

Charles shook his head once, then again more emphatically.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

Victor's voice remained infuriatingly controlled.

—

Adrian frowned, almost confused.

“What is he talking about?”

Victor finally looked toward him.

“After the public downfall of Madison Dynamics, Daniel came to me in private.”

A brief pause followed.

“He wanted another chance.”

Charles’s expression burned with fury.

“No.”

Victor continued, unfazed.

“He admitted that the company couldn’t survive legally anymore. Too much damage and too much debt.”

Another pause ensued.

“So, I offered him something different.”

—

Zoe watched Charles intently now, noticing the panic beginning to replace the certainty in his expression.

Real panic.

—

Victor went on calmly.

“A private development fund.”

Lila frowned.

“You funded him after ruining his company?”

Victor's jaw tightened slightly.

“I eliminated a competitor in the public eye.”

A pause.

“But Daniel's work still held value.”

Charles suddenly laughed, sharp and unsteady.

“No…”

He began to step backward slowly.

“No, he wouldn’t accept any help from you.”

Victor's glare sharpened.

“He did.”

—

The observatory felt like it was closing in on them, the countdown clock monotonously ticking behind Charles.

00:57:48.

—

Victor finally inserted the flash drive into one of the monitors, instantly loading a new video.

It was older footage again.

Daniel Madison appeared this time.

Alone.

Tired.

Exhausted beyond words.

—

The timestamp was from months after the collapse of Madison Dynamics.

—

Daniel stared directly into the camera.

“If Charles ever sees this…”

His voice cracked slightly.

“…then I’ve failed twice.”

—

Present-day Charles froze completely.

—

The room remained silent except for the recording.

—

Daniel took a deep breath onscreen.

“Victor King destroyed my company.”

A pause.

“But he didn’t destroy my work.”

Another pause.

“He offered me funding to rebuild independently.”

—

Charles whispered immediately,

“No…”

As if saying it enough times might erase itself.

—

Onscreen,

Daniel went on.

“I loathed him for what he did.”

A weary chuckle broke through.

“But hatred doesn't feed families.”

Another pause.

“And it doesn’t save dreams either.”

—

Adrian stared at the footage in silence.

Even Victor looked unsettled now.

Maybe he hadn't watched this in years either.

—

Daniel rubbed a hand across his face onscreen.

“If you’re watching this, Charles, then something happened to me before I could fix what became of us.”

His expression softened painfully then.

—

“And if that’s the case…”

A pause.

“…don’t spend your life carrying my anger.”

—

Charles took another step back, his breathing was uneven now.

—

“No…”

Zoe felt a tight pain in her chest as she watched him.

Because this,

This was no longer about rage.

—

This was a breakdown.

—

Daniel looked directly into the camera one final time.

“Victor and I were never friends.”

A faint smile appeared.

“But in the end…”

Another pause.

“…he tried.”

Then the video ended.

—

Silence enveloped the observatory completely.

—

Charles remained standing still.

His eyes fixated on the dark monitor now reflecting only his own face back at him.

—

Everything he built his life around,

Shattered in less than five minutes.

—

Victor spoke softly.

“Daniel died before his new company launched.”

Charles showed no reaction.

—

“He had a breakdown after enduring years of pressure.”

A pause.

“I couldn’t stop that.”

—

Still no response.

—

Adrian looked toward Charles slowly.

And for the first time,

The terrifying certainty that had driven him for years was gone.

—

Because now,

There was no clear villain left.

No straightforward narrative.

No single desire for revenge.

—

Only broken men making terrible choices and leaving destruction behind them.

—

Charles finally let out a soft laugh.

But the sound broke halfway through.

—

“So that’s it?”

His eyes remained fixed on the dark monitor.

“My entire life…”

A pause.

“…built around a narrative even my father let go of?”

Victor answered quietly.

“He wanted you freed from it.”

—

Charles suddenly turned violently toward him.

“DON’T.”

His outburst echoed harshly through the observatory.

—

Zoe flinched instinctively.

Lila immediately stepped forward carefully.

But Adrian raised a hand slightly.

Wait.

—

Charles looked utterly defeated now.

Not dangerous.

Worse.

Empty.

—

“All those years…”he murmured.

“All those years I thought he died despising you.”

Victor’s expression tightened just slightly.

“He hated what I did.”

A pause.

“But your father understood survival better than you think.”

—

Charles laughed again.

Tears began to form in his eyes, despite how hard he fought to hold them back.

—

“And I ruined everything for what?”

No one had an answer.

Because no answer existed.

—

The countdown continued behind him.

00:51:03.

—

Adrian stepped forward slowly.

“Charles.”

Charles turned to look at him.

And somehow,

For the first time,

He appeared young.

Not like the calculated monster that everyone feared.

Just a person exhausted from carrying grief for far too long.

—

“You can still stop this,” Adrian said softly.

Charles’s eyes flickered to the countdown clock.

Then back to Adrian.

—

“And then what?”

A pause.

“You rebuild your empire?”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“That empire is already dead.”

Silence filled the air.

—

Victor shot a sharp glance at his son.

But Adrian kept going.

—

“I spent years trying to separate myself from what this company became.”

A pause lingered.

“Maybe the truth is that I can’t.”

Zoe shot an immediate look at him.

“Adrian,”

“But I can decide what happens next.”

His gaze held on Charles.

—

“And so can you.”

—

At that moment, something in Charles visibly shattered.

Not out of rage.

Not seeking revenge.

—

But from grief.

Pure grief.

—

Because for the first time in years,

Someone wasn't fighting him.

Or fearing him.

Or controlling him.

—

Someone was simply imploring him to stop the pain.

—

And just then,

The alarms in the observatory began blaring loudly overhead.

Emergency system warming.

—

Lila turned sharply toward the monitors.

“What now?”

One security feed flashed red repeatedly.

STRUCTURAL FAILURE DETECTED.

—

The old observatory framework creaked violently around them.

Dust falling from the ceiling.

Metal supports quivered.

—

A voice crackled over the comms,

“ The upper dome is collapsing!”
