Chapter 90 Buried Underneath

Chapter 90 Buried Underneath

The atmosphere in the room didn't just go quiet.

It emptied.

Of sound. Of movement. Of certainty.

Just one sentence from Charles had done what neither threats, explosions, nor manipulation could ever fully manage to do.

It cracked something open inside Adrian.

Something old.

Something buried.

Something he had spent most of his life refusing to question.

\---

At that moment, every instinct in Adrian became sharp at once.

Not to panic.

Not to fear.

But to something colder.

Something more dangerous.

“What does that mean?” he asked.

His voice was low and steady, though the tension beneath it was clear.

Charles didn’t answer immediately.

Of course not.

He took his time, stepping slowly backward toward the narrow hallway, as if time itself belonged to him.

Calm.

Unhurried.

Like a man who had already accepted the consequences of his actions.

Outside, beyond the cabin walls, the distant sound of approaching vehicles grew louder.

Federal teams.

Closing in fast.

Lights flashed faintly through the trees outside the windows.

The operation was tightening.

But somehow,

Inside the cabin, that no longer felt like the real threat. .

“Charles,” Adrian warned, his tone more insistent this time.

A real warning lurked in his voice.

The kind that came before violence.

Charles halted near the entrance to the hallway.

Then he finally spoke.

“Your father hid more than just money and memories in this place.”

A pause.

He eyes lifted directly to Adrian's.

“He hid people toi.”

\---

Zoe frowned immediately.

“What?”

But Adrian reacted first.

Not verbally.

Not with visible reactions at first.

Just,

A shift.

Subtle.

Dangerous.

A flicker of recognition crossed his face, so faintly most people would have missed it.

But Zoe saw it.

And Charles definitely did.

Because suddenly Adrian wasn't looking at Charles anymore.

He was looking somewhere else entirely.

Somewhere years away.

\---

He was twelve again.

Standing outside the same cabin while rain pounded on the roof.

Victor's voice thundered from somewhere beyond the trees.

Furious.

Violent.

Adrian remembered standing near the porch steps, frozen in place while his mother softly urged him to come inside.

Another man had been there that night.

Someone Adrian didn't recognize.

Someone terrified.

Voices had echoed through the dark forest surrounding the property.

Shouting.

Threats.

Then silence.

And afterward,

Victor knelt before Adrian with a disquieting calm that somehow felt worse than anger.

“Never go near the lower storage space beneath this property,” he had ordered.

Not sternly.

Not protectively.

But like an order.

Like a warning.

Like fear.

\---

Adrian's chest tightened sharply in the present.

“No…”

Charles watched him carefully.

Knowingly.

“You remember now.”

\---

Lila’s voice urgently crackled through Adrian's earpiece.

“Teams are almost at the border.”

Adrian ignored her completely.

His eyes remained locked on Charles.

“What’s beneath this cabin?”

Charles smiled faintly.

Not warmly.

Not in a cruel way either.

Just weary.

“Truth.”

\---

Then suddenly,

A sound echoed from beneath the floorboards.

Low.

Mechanical.

Old.

An alarm.

Zoe flinched abruptly, her pulse jumping hard.

“What was that?”

But Adrian stood utterly still.

Because he recognized it.

Not completely.

But enough.

Old private security systems.

Vault locks.

Emergency control mechanisms.

Victor’s paranoia.

Victor's obsession for control.

Victor's desire to bury anything that threatened him.

\---

Charles let out a soft breath.

“I really hoped he would tell you himself someday.”

Adrian’s voice became sharp instantly.

“Tell me what?”

Another pause stretched between them.

Then Charles finally said it.

“That your family was involved in burying one of the largest illegal technology acquisitions of the last two decades.”

Silence enveloped the room.

Zoe stared at him.

“What?”

Her voice barely sounded real.

Adrian's expression had gone completely still.

Dangerously still.

Because suddenly,

Too many scattered pieces began to align.

Old rumors Victor always suppressed before they spread.

Competitors that disappeared overnight.

Corporate acquisition no one could fully explain.

Entire startups that disappeared without a legal trace.

Things Adrian had dismissed for years as aggressive business moves.

Things he had avoided looking at too closely,

Because they belonged to Victor.

And Adrian had spent most of his life trying not to become him.

\---

Charles continued softly.

“There was another company.”

The floor vibrated beneath them again.

Louder this time.

Dust fell from the ceiling beams.

“A small company,” Charles continued. “But brilliant. Advanced enough to threaten Victor’s expansion before his company became untouchable.”

Another pause.

“So he buried them.”

\---

“No,” Adrian protested immediately.

But uncertainty crept into the edges of his denial.

Because part of him already knew.

Or perhaps,

Part of him had always known.

\---

Lila's voice burst through the comms again.

Urgent now.

“Adrian, thermal scans just detected underground structures beneath the property.”

Zoe’s eyes widened.

Underground structures?

Beneath the cabin?

Charles smiled faintly.

“There it is.”

\---

Adrian stepped toward him instantly.

Sharp.

Confrontational.

“What did you activate?”

“Nothing destructive,” Charles replied calmly.

Then, after a brief pause,

“Relax.”

But Adrian no longer trusted any version of that word coming from him.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

For the first time that night, Charles actually looked exhausted.

Completely exhausted.

“The system activated because federal teams breached the outer perimeter,” he explained quietly.

Another vibration rolled beneath the cabin.

Stronger this time.

“Victor designed this place to automatically erase evidence if authorities ever got too close.”

\---

Zoe's blood ran cold.

Erase evidence?

“What evidence?” she whispered.

Charles looked directly at Adrian.

“Everything your father buried.”

\---

The floor trembled harder this time.

Somewhere below them, enormous machinery stirred from years of silence.

Heavy metallic sounds echoed up through hidden walls.

Grinding.

Unlocking.

Moving.

As if the cabin itself held secrets in its very structure.

\---

Lila’s voice cut through with urgency.

“Adrian, get out of the structure now!”

But Adrian couldn’t move.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about Charles.

It wasn’t about investor manipulation.

It wasn’t about media.

Or Clara.

Or the board.

This was about Victor.

His father.

And whatever nightmare he had concealed beneath their family name.

\---

Charles took another slow step backward.

“You spent months back then thinking I was the disease inside your empire.”

A pause.

“But I was only the symptom.”

\---

Adrian's jaw tightened violently.

“You manipulated people. Destroyed lives.”

“Yes.”

No denial.

No excuse.

Nothing defensive.

“But Victor created the environment that made people like me useful.”

Silence settled heavily between them.

And somehow,

That truth struck harder than anger would have.

Because Adrian couldn’t dismiss it.

Couldn't immediately reject it.

Not anymore.

\---

Another violent tremor shook the cabin.

Zoe instinctively moved closer to Adrian, fear finally overtaking all other emotions.

“What’s happening?”

Adrian glanced at the floorboards.

Then toward Charles standing near the hallway.

And suddenly,

Everything clicked into place.

Charles hadn’t brought them here to hide.

He had brought them here to expose the real Victor.

Completely.

Publicly.

Irreversibly.

\---

“You planned this,” Adrian said quietly.

Charles nodded once.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But not in the way you think.”

\---

Outside,

Federal vehicles barreled through the forest edge.

Agents flooded the perimeter rapidly with weapons raised.

Orders echoed through the trees.

Lights violently swept across the cabin windows.

Inside,

The overhead lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then dimmed sharply before stabilizing again.

And beneath the structure,

Something massive opened.

A deep metallic rumble thundered upward through the floor.

Vault doors.

Massive doors.

Hidden for years.

Or maybe decades.

\---

Zoe's breathing quickened.

“Adrian…”

But he barely heard her now.

Because the final pieces had come together.

Charles didn’t disappear after the scandal because he was fleeing.

He was leading Adrian here.

To this cabin.

To this secret.

To the one truth capable of destroying the King family forever.

\---

Charles looked at Adrian one last time.

Not smirking.

Not victorious.

Almost…

Sad.

“You wanted the truth,” he said softly.

A pause.

“Now, go see what your father built beneath your name.”

\---

Then suddenly,

The back door of the cabin burst open behind Charles.

Cold wind rushed violently into the room.

Smoke canisters exploded instantly across the hallway.

Federal agents shouted outside.

“MOVE IN!”

Chaos erupted again.

Visibility was lost almost instantly beneath thick smoke.

Zoe coughed hard, instinctively retreating toward Adrian.

Adrian lunged forward without hesitation.

“CHARLES!”

But by the time the smoke cleared enough to see,

He was gone.

Again.

Vanished into the confusion like a ghost slipping through cracks in reality.

\---

Except this time,

He left something behind.

A small black keycard rested on the wooden floor near the hallway entrance.

Still.

Waiting.

Adrian stepped forward slowly and picked it up.

Cold metal pressed against his palm.

And one word was engraved on its surface.

\---

VAULT.
