Chapter 85: No Traces

This is where the whole issue was meant to end.

Charles getting arrested. Zoe safe and alive. Everything should have been over.

After a relentless weeks of manipulation, fear, lies, pressure, and chaos;

There should have been an ending.

A clean one.

One where the villain was dragged away in handcuffs, the survivors could finally breathe, and the nightmare crumbled under the weight of truth.

And for a fleeting, dangerous moment,

Adrian genuinely thought that was what was happening.

—

Federal agents stormed through the shattered mansion with practiced precision, shouting orders over the chaos as rain lashed against shattered glass.

“Clear the premises!”

“Get everyone out!”

“Secure the suspect!”

Red laser beams cut sharply through the darkness, sweeping across overturned furniture and broken walls. Boots pounded against debris-covered floors. Radios crackled continuously.

Everything unfolded simultaneously.

Too fast.

Too loud.

Too chaotic to fully comprehend.

Charles Madison was forced face-down on the ground, while agents him firmly, pinning his arms behind his back.

For the first time in what felt like forever,

He seemed controlled.

Defeated.

Broken.

Glass littered across the room like scattered ice under flashing emergency lights. Rain poured through shattered windows, soaking the expensive hardwood floors and turning the mansion into something ruined and almost unrecognizable.

But Adrian barely saw any of it.

Because Zoe was alive.

That was all that mattered.

As soon as he reached her, he instinctively pulled her close, gripping her hand tightly, nearly desperate.

Like if he loosened his grip even slightly--

She would disappear again.

And Zoe,

Still trembling from shock,

Held onto him just as tightly.

Because after everything that had happened…

After the fear.

After the betrayal.

After the endless uncertainty,

Being near Adrian still felt safe.

Even now.

Especially now.

“Are you okay?” he asked quickly, his voice raw with concern.

Zoe nodded immediately, although her movement was shaky.

“I think so.”

Think.

Not certain.

That single word cut deeper than any panic ever could.

Adrian brushed damp strands of hair away from her face instinctively, his eyes scanning for injuries, checking her wrists, her shoulders, every visible mark.

The tenderness of the gesture almost hurt Zoe to endure.

Because it reminded her too clearly of everything she had missed.

Everything she had tried to walk away from.

Even after all the hurt,

Part of her still leaned toward him instinctively.

Still trusted him without hesitation.

And that might have been the most dangerous thing of all.

—

Across the room, agents roughly lifted Charles.

“Move!”

But Charles didn’t struggle.

Didn’t fight back.

Didn’t argue.

He simply lifted his head slowly,

And smiled.

It wasn't a normal smile.

Not one of relief.

Not one of fear.

Not one of surrender.

It was something else.

Something faint.

Something wrong.

Adrian noticed it right away.

Every instinct within him sharpened all at once.

Because Charles Madison doesn't smile when he's losing.

And that smile,

That small, quiet expression,

Meant something was terribly off.

Then Adrian heard it.

Soft.

Nearly hidden beneath the storm outside and the cacophony surrounding him.

Tick.

His gaze turned toward the hallway instantly.

Tick.

Cold dread shot through him.

No.

His body reacted before his mind could fully caught up.

"GET DOWN!"

His voice tore violently through the house.

But he already knew.

It's too late.

—

BOOM.

The explosion detonated with terrifying force.

The entire lower level erupted in an instant.

Walls collapsed outward.

Glass flew through the air like bullets.

Fire erupted violently, engulfing the mansion in orange light and smoke.

The floor beneath them collapsed without warning.

Zoe screamed as the blast threw her across the room.

Adrian lost his grip on her hand.

Pain radiated through his shoulder as he slammed hard into the broken debris, splintered wood crashing around him.

Agents shouted everywhere.

Smoke swallowed the room almost instantly.

Another explosion boomed beneath the structure.

Then another.

The entire building groaned violently as it began to collapse inward, piece by piece.

For several horrifying seconds,

Everything became chaos.

Fire.

Screaming.

Crashing metal.

Falling concrete.

Darkness.

Dust.

Confusion.

Adrian forced himself to rise upright despite the ringing in his ears, coughing violently as smoke burned through his lungs.

His vision blurred.

Blood trickled down from a cut near his temple, warmth against his skin.

But he barely noticed.

Because there was only one thing mattered.

“ZOE!”

No response.

Panic hit him instantly.

Pure panic.

Animalistic panic.

The kind that stripped away logic completely.

The room barely existed anymore.

Half the ceiling had collapsed inward. Fire rapidly spread across shattered furniture and broken support beams. Federal agents were pulling injured officers toward exits as the smoke thickened.

Adrian disregarded every command shouted at him.

Ignored the collapsing structure.

Ignored the pain coursing through his body.

“ZOE!”

Still nothing.

Then his eyes caught movement near where agents had restrained Charles moments earlier.

Or rather,

The absence of it.

The restraints lay abandoned near shattered debris.

Empty.

No body.

No blood.

No sign of him at all.

Adrian felt a wave of cold terror wash over him.

“No…”

It couldn’t be.

Charles had been surrounded.

Pinned down.

Controlled.

Unless,

The realization hit him.

The explosion hadn’t come from desperation.

It had been planned.

Charles had anticipated this.

Prepared for it.

Adrian searched wildly through the smoke-filled wreckage.

Then he caught sight of it.

Near the wrecked back entrance,

Movement.

A shadow disappearing into the storm outside.

And in that shadow,

Someone was being taken. P

Zoe.

“NO!”

Adrian stumbled forward immediately despite the crumbling structure around him.

An agent grabbed him hard by the arm.

“Sir, the building is unstable!”

Adrian forcefully shoved him away.

“He has her!”

Another explosion detonated upstairs.

The staircase collapsed completely behind them.

Flames surged higher.

The mansion was crumbling around them.

Outside, the storm had become chaos.

Rain and smoke blurred together beneath flashing emergency lights. Several vehicles had overturned due to the blast. Agents rushed through the area, shouting breaking updates into damaged radios.

Communication was collapsing almost as fast as the house itself.

And somewhere inside that confusion,

Charles vanished.

Again.

Adrian sprinted through the rubble toward the back of the mansion, lungs burning from smoke and adrenaline.

But by the time he reached the tree line,

There was nothing.

No vehicle.

No car headlights.

No movement.

Just rain.

Darkness.

And silence.

His breath came hard now, sharp and uneven.

Not from exhaustion.

But from disbelief.

How?

How the hell had Charles planned this too?

Lila’s call suddenly rang through his damaged phone and he answered the call immediately.

“Adrian!”

He responded instantly.

“He took her.”

There was silence.

Then,

“What?”

“He had planned the explosion.”

Rain soaked his clothes as he desperately scanned the woods.

“Charles escaped with Zoe.”

Lila cursed quietly under her breath, the first genuine crack in composure Adrian had heard from her in years.

“We’ve lost visual completely,” Adrian continued. “No direction. No vehicle. Nothing.”

Behind him, federal agents were desperately trying to regain control of the situation.

But Adrian barely noticed them.

Because one realization crushed through everything else.

Charles had prepared for failure.

Prepared for arrest.

Prepared for the raid.

Which meant;

This was never supposed to end at the house.

“Adrian,” Lila said carefully, “listen to me.”

But he wasn't listening anymore.

Because all he could see was Zoe disappearing into smoke again,

Right after he had finally gotten her back.

A federal officer approached him quickly.

“We're forming perimeter search teams now.”

“It’s too late.”

“We can still track--”

“No,” Adrian snapped sharply.

His eyes remained fixed on the dark forest ahead.

"He thought this through too well.”

A pause.

“He’s leaving no traces.”

And that was the terrifying part.

Charles Madison was no longer acting like a businessman trying to save himself.

He was acting like a man who had already accepted destruction,

And simply intended to control the outcome before anyone else had the chance.

—

Miles away,

Deep within the storm,

A black vehicle slipped onto an unmarked road hidden beneath heavy rain and darkness.

Inside the vehicle, Zoe slowly regained consciousness.

Severe pain pulsed through her head.

Her vision blurred in and out.

The first sound she heard,

Was rain pounding against glass.

Steady.

Cold.

Relentless m.

The second thing she heard,

Was Charles’s voice.

Soft.

Tired.

Almost… disappointed.

“I really hoped it wouldn’t come to this.”
