Chapter 86: The Edge of Ruin

Zoe's eyes fluttered open slowly.

Everything hurt.

Her head.

Her ribs.

Even her mind.

—

Rain blurred across the windows of the vehicle, while darkness swallowed the road ahead.

The interior lights were dim.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

—

Charles was sitting beside her again.

As if this was ordinary.

As if explosions, abductions, and shattered lives were ordinary conversations waiting to happen.

—

Zoe pulled herself upright sharply.

“What did you do?!”

Her voice cracked with panic and disbelief.

—

Charles looked tired now.

Not polished.

Not composed.

Just exhausted.

—

“I simply created an exit,” he stated softly.

“You blew up a house!”

“It was already compromised.”

Her breathing quickened again.

“There were  people inside!”

“I know.”

The calmness of his answer made fear crawl colder through her chest.

—

Zoe looked toward the doors instinctively.

Locked.

Of course.

—

“Adrian could’ve died.”

For a brief moment, something shifted in Charles’s expression.

Barely noticeable.

—

But Zoe Adrian saw it.

—

And in an instant,

She understood something horrifying.

—

Charles never truly meant to kill Adrian.

Not really.

—

Everything else?

Collateral damage.

Manipulation.

Control.

But Adrian,

Adrian was personal.

—

“You don't hate him,” she whispered.

Charles gazed out the window.

“No.”

After a pause, he added, “Which is exactly which this became dangerous.”

—

Back at the destroyed house,

The situation had descended into complete chaos.

—

Firefighters battled the collapsing remains of the house while federal agents set up wider search zones across the surrounding area.

News helicopters circled overhead already.

Emergency lights illuminated the storm with harsh colors.

—

And in the center of it all,

Adrian stood completely still.

Drenched in rain.

Blood trickling faintly from his forehead.

Watching the flames consume what should have been the end of this nightmare.

—

But instead,

It transformed into something worse.

—

Lila arrived nearly forty minutes later.

As soon as she stepped from the vehicle and spotted Adrian,

Her chest tightened.

Because he looked terrifyingly calm.

—

“What’s the update?” she inquired cautiously.

One federal officer responded before Adrian could.

“No confirmed direction. Charles devised multiple escape plans.”

Lila muttered under her breath.

“Vehicle traces?”

“Minimal.”

Another agent stepped forward.

“One car abandoned twelve miles east. Likely a decoy.”

Adrian finally spoke.

“he had been planning this weeks ago.”

His voice sounded hollow now.

Controlled beyond normal control.

Which worried Lila more than rage would have.

—

“He knew someone would eventually corner him,” Adrian continued quietly.

“So he created layers of escape.”

—

Lila glanced at the burning remains of the house.

“He detonated a property linked to Victor King.”

A faint, humorless smile flickered across Adrian’s face.

“Poetic.”

—

Another silence settled.

Heavy.

Then Lila stepped closer.

“You need medical attention.”

“No.”

“Adrian--”

“No.”

This time sharper.

Not loud.

Just definitive.

—

Because at this moment,

Pain felt irrelevant.

—

One federal investigator approached holding a recovered device bag.

“Mr. King.”

Adrian turned to him.

“We retrieved partial communication equipment from the house."

“Anything of use?”

“Possibly.”

The man hesitated.

“There’s evidence suggesting Charles had outside assistance.”

Adrian’s expression darkened immediately.

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

As expected.

Nothing involving Charles was ever simple.

—

Lila observed Adrian closely now.

Because she recognized the dangerous shift happening inside  him.

The guilt.

The self-blame.

The obsession beginning to take form.

—

This had long stopped being about winning days ago.

Now,

It was about getting Zoe back alive.

—

And Adrian would be willing to destroy himself in the process if necessary.

—

Meanwhile,

The vehicle finally slowed near dawn.

The rain had weakened into soft mist now.

Trees stretched endlessly around them.

Remote.

Hidden.

Impossible to navigate blindly.

—

Zoe anxiously stared out the window.

Trying to memorize routes.

Turns.

Landmarks.

Anything useful.

—

But Charles noticed.

“It won’t help.”

She looked away immediately.

“I wasn’t,”

“You were.”

A pause.

“But honestly? I’d expect less from you if you didn't try.”

—

The vehicle came to a complete stop moments later.

Another secluded property.

Smaller this time.

It looks older too.

A cabin-style architecture hidden deep within the woods.

—

Charles stepped out first.

Then looked back toward her.

“Come inside.”

Zoe didn't move immediately.

Exhaustion finally mixing with anger now.

“You can’t keep doing this.”

Charles’s expression remained unreadable.

“Actually,” he said quietly,

“I can.”

—

Inside the cabin,

Everything felt strangely normal.

Lights on.

Furniture clean.

Fireplace burning softly.

No signs of panic.

No visible weapons.

—

That scared Zoe even more.

Because it meant preparation.

Long-term preparation.

—

Charles slowly removed his soaked coat.

Then finally looked at her properly again.

“You should rest.”

Zoe stared at him as if he had lost his mind.

“You kidnapped me.”

“And you're injured.”

“I don't care.”

“But Adrian would.”

The words hit unexpectedly hard.

—

Charles noticed immediately.

He sighed softly.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“That look.”

A pause.

“The reason he keeps choosing you.”

—

Zoe folded her arms tightly around herself.

“You’re obsessed with him.”

Charles shook his head slowly.

“No.”

Then more quietly,

“I’m fascinated by what people become when love matters more than ambition to them."

—

Zoe frowned.

“Why does that bother you so much?”

For the first time,

Charles hesitated.

Real hesitation.

—

Then he diverted his gaze to the fire instead of her.

And when he finally spoke,

His voice sounded distant somehow.

Older.

—

“Because people that want power don’t survive that way.”

Silence followed.

Then softly,

“My father instilled that lesson in me very early.”

—

Zoe watched him carefully.

And suddenly,

The image shifted slightly.

Not enough to forgive him.

Never that.

But enough to see the brokenness beneath the facade of control.

—

Charles noticed the change in her expression and almost smiled.

“Don't feel sympathy for me.”

A beat passed.

“You’ll regret it.”

—

Back at the ruined property,

Adrian finally received a lead.

A private analyst Lila had employed rushed toward him quickly.

“We recovered fragment from traffic feeds fifteen miles south.”

Adrian turned immediately.

“What kind of fragments?”

“A vehicle matching one of Charles’s escape patterns.”

“Where?”

The analyst handed him a tablet.

“Forest routes near the state border.”

Adrian stared at the map intently.

Remote terrain.

Sparse surveillance.

Old private land holdings.

—

Then,

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Because one area stood out.

A cluster of properties connected years ago to abandoned corporate retreat acquisition.

Shell-owned.

Hard to trace because it is located deep in the woods.

—

Victor’s network once again.

—

Adrian looked up slowly.

And for the first time since the explosion,

A clear course began to take shape.

—

Charles left no traces.

—

But he left one thing,

Habits.

—

And Adrian was finally starting to understand them.
