Chapter 84: Face to Face

Rain poured relentlessly across the house.

Chilly.

Fierce.

Unyielding.

—

Adrian continued his approach to the house.

Every part of him screamed to sprint faster.

Break down the doors.

And drag Zoe out himself.

—

But another part of him,

Sharper.

Colder.

More dangerous.

Warned him that Charles was expecting exactly that.

—

So Adrian forced himself to stay controlled.

Even as rage burned beneath each breath.

—

Federal agents rushed after him from the roadside.

“Mr. King!”

“Wait for a strategic move!”

“Do not approach alone!”

—

Adrian ignored all of them.

Because no strategic team in this world understood Charles quite like he did at that moment.

—

Inside the house,

Zoe stood still at the center of the room.

Her heart racing violently as Adrian's silhouette appeared through the rain-soaked windows.

—

He came.

—

Even after everything,

He still came for her.

—

A sharp pain twisted in her chest.

Because she suddenly realized she had never truly doubted his commitment; she only doubted whether the world around him would once again tear them apart.

—

Charles adjusted his cuffs calmly.

“Interesting.”

Zoe shot him a piercing look.

“What do you mean?”

“He didn’t bring an army.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“He came here himself first.”

—

The front door opened.

Not kicked in.

Not forced.

But carefully opened.

—

Adrian stepped inside slowly.

Rainwater dripped from his coat onto the dark wooden floor.

At first glance, his expression was unreadable.

—

But Zoe saw it immediately.

The fury beneath the calm facade.

The fear lying deeper.

—

And somehow,

Seeing both nearly broke her.

—

Their eyes locked instantly.

In that fleeting moment, everything else surrounding them faded away.

The room.

Charles.

The guards.

The months spent apart.

—

Just the two of them.

—

“Are you hurt?” Adrian asked softly.

Zoe shook her head immediately.

“No.”

His tensed shoulders relaxed slightly.

Just slightly.

—

Then his gaze shifted toward Charles.

And the room temperature seemed to drop instantly.

—

“Move away from her.”

Charles tilted his head slightly.

“You came here sooner than I expected.”

“I said move.”

The sharpness in Adrian's voice made even the guards glance at each other anxiously.

—

But Charles remained composed.

Always composed.

—

“You know,” he stated casually, “most men in your position would have let the authorities handle this.”

Adrian stepped further inside.

“Most men aren't me.”

“Clearly.”

There was a pause.

“You've become reckless.”

"No," Adrian replied coldly.

“I've become honest.”

—

Silence settled heavily.

Rain hammered against the windows.

—

Federal agents had finally surrounded the outside perimeter now.

Red and blue lights flashing through the storm.

Commands echoed softly beyond the walls.

—

Charles glanced toward the windows.

Then back at Adrian.

“It looks crowded.”

“You're finished.”

A faint smile appeared on his face again.

“That depends on your perspective.”

—

Adrian's patience began to wear thin.

“You kidnapped her.”

“And yet she remains unharmed.”

“You even used explosives.”

“That's a controlled distraction.”

“You manipulated an entire corporation.”

Charles shrugged lightly.

“And it worked.”

—

Zoe stared at him in disbelief.

How could someone speak about destruction so nonchalantly?

Lives were ruined.

Fear all around.

—

And Charles still spoke as if it were just a strategy on a chessboard.

—

“You've destroyed yourself,” Adrian said quietly.

For the first time,

Charles's smile faltered slightly.

—

"No," he replied.

“You did that the moment you started choosing emotion over power.”

Adrian let out a soft, but humorless laugh.

—

“You still don’t understand.”

Charles’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Then enlighten me.”

Adrian looked toward Zoe briefly before answering.

And the softness in his gaze during that single glance changed something in the room instantly.

—

“Power means nothing if there’s no one left you’d willingly sacrifice it for.”

Silence.

A real heavy silence stretched across the room.

—

Charles stared at him for a long moment.

Then finally smiled again.

But this time,

It appeared weary.

Almost like pitying.

—

“There it is,” he murmured.

“That very thing that destroyed you.”

Zoe shifted her gaze between them anxiously now.

Because something dangerous was shifting beneath their conversation.

Not physically but psychologically.

—

Adrian took another step closer.

“Tell your men to stand down.”

Charles remained motionless.

Instead,

He looked at Zoe.

“You know what's fascinating?”

Her stomach twisted with unease.

“Charles--”

“He's ready to sacrifice an empire for you.”

Adrian's expression darkened instantly.

“Stop talking.”

“But will he survive what comes after?”

Zoe frowned, confused.

“What does that mean?”

Charles paid her no attention.

His eyes fixed entirely on Adrian now.

—

“The media will bounce back. Investors will bounce back. The company will bounce back.”

A pause.

“But him?”

Another pause.

“He’ll live the rest of his life being feared by the people around him.”

—

Adrian's jaw clenched.

Because some part of that already felt undeniably true.

—

Charles stepped slightly closer as well.

Two dangerous men stood in silence while the rain crashed around the house.

—

“You publicly exposed your own father,” Charles continued quietly.

“You destroyed your board. Your investors. Your reputation.”

A slight tilt of his head.

“And for what?”

—

Adrian answered immediately.

“For the truth.”

Charles smiled sadly this time.

“No.”

He eyes shifted toward Zoe briefly.

“For her.”

—

The silence that followed afterward felt endless.

Because no one denied it.

Not even Adrian.

—

Outside,

The federal agents were gearing up for a forced entry.

Weapons drawn.

Commands being relayed rapidly through radios.

—

Meanwhile, inside,

The tension reached an unbearable peak.

—

Then suddenly,

One of Charles’s guards moved nervously toward the window.

“They’re moving in.”

Everything changed instantly.

—

The room snapped tight with panic.

The guards instinctively reached for their weapons.

Zoe gasped softly at the sight of that.

Adrian stepped forward immediately.

“Don’t.”

Sharp.

Commanding.

Dangerously calm.

—

Charles raised a hand slowly toward his men.

And surprisingly,

They stopped.

—

Another loud command rang out from outside.

" EXIT THE PROPERTY IMMEDIATELY!”

—

Charles glanced toward the door calmly.

Then back at Adrian.

—

And for the first time,

He looked truly worn out.

—

“This was never meant to escalate this far,” he said quietly.

Zoe stared at him in disbelief.

“But you kidnapped me.”

“Yes, I did that for a reason.”

His answer came too quickly.

—

An odd silence lingered.

Then Charles looked directly at Adrian again.

—

“You know what the worst part is?”

A beat.

“I almost held you in enough regard to stop.”

—

Before Adrian could respond,

The front windows exploded inward.

Federal agents stormed the house instantly.

“DON’T MOVE!”

“EVERYONE GET DOWN!”

Chaos erupted once again.

Guards tackled immediately.

Weapons were seized.

Commands blared everywhere.

—

Zoe flinched hard at the commotion.

And Adrian instinctively moved toward her.

—

But across the room,

Charles didn't flee.

Didn’t fight back.

Didn't resist.

—

He simply stood there quietly while agents encircled him.

Rains and shards of glass scattered around his feet.

—

And as the officers forced him to the ground,

His eyes remained fixed on Adrian.

—

Not angry.

Not scared.

—

Just… disappointed.

—

Like a man witnessing the ending of something only he fully understood.
