Chapter 77 Hidden Desire
Chapter 77 Hidden Desire
The courtyard was quiet, save for the rhythmic thud of their boots on the stone tiles. Lyra and Dante faced each other across the training field, clawing out, but the tension between them was not in their claws it was in every glance, every breath, every subtle shift of weight.
“Careful,” Dante said, smirking, his dark eyes glinting in the moonlight. “I don’t want to have to take it easy on you.”
Lyra raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile tugging at her lips. “Take it easy? That’s hardly your style, Dante.”
He tilted his head, mock-offended. “Excuse me? I’m always fair. Always. I merely let you think you have a chance.”
She laughed softly, the sound carrying through the night air, and suddenly the tension seemed lighter. For a moment, she forgot the weight of the crown, the responsibility of the Underworld, and even the shadows of the Mafia that lingered outside their walls. It was just them, two wolves, two hearts, locked in a dance of skill and subtle attraction.
They moved in sync, circling each other. Lyra feinted to the left, Dante mirrored her, their claws clashing with a sharp ting that echoed in the empty courtyard. She blocked his next strike, stepping closer than necessary, feeling the heat radiate from him.
“You’re getting faster,” Dante said, voice low, almost intimate, as if he were sharing a secret with her. “I almost didn’t recognize you.”
Lyra felt a flush creep up her neck. “Almost didn’t recognize me? Careful, Dante. That sounds like an insult.”
“Maybe it’s a compliment,” he countered smoothly, pressing just a little too close, forcing her to shift her stance. “Or maybe it’s a warning.”
Their eyes locked. The teasing, competitive air between them now carried a subtle undercurrent, something neither wanted to name yet. Lyra’s pulse quickened. She could feel her humanity, soft, tender, fragile, peeking through the layers of the Fire Queen, the Luna Reborn. Her wolf instincts were calm, but her heart… her heart was not.
She lunged suddenly, not with her claw, but forward, attempting a disarming move. Dante countered effortlessly, blocking her with a quick twist of his wrist. He held her gaze as he pushed her back just slightly, close enough that she could feel the heat of his body.
“You’re aggressive tonight,” he said, voice low, teasing. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”
Lyra’s breath caught. “Maybe I just… want to see how much you can handle,” she said, letting her words hang in the space between them.
He smirked, but his eyes softened, almost tenderly. “Oh, I can handle more than you think,” he whispered, the words carrying a weight that made her knees feel weak.
Their training became less about claws and more about proximity, movements almost intimate. Each feint, each parry, was layered with subtle touches, accidental or not, that sent shivers down Lyra’s spine. She was aware of every brush of his arm, every shift in his stance, the way his breath warmed the air near her face.
For the first time in weeks, she felt something other than the heavy responsibility of being Underworld Queen. She felt… alive. She felt human. And it scared her, because she hadn’t allowed herself this softness in so long.
“You’re distracted,” Dante said suddenly, his tone playful but his eyes sharp. “What are you thinking about?”
Lyra hesitated, the words catching in her throat. Did she admit that she was thinking about him? About the way his hand lingered too long on her wrist? About the warmth of his chest so close to hers? About the softness beneath the sharp edge of the man she had been terrified of trusting for so long?
“I’m… thinking,” she said finally, letting her gaze drop just slightly, “that you’re lucky I’m merciful tonight.”
Dante chuckled, but there was something in his expression that made her stomach flutter, an intensity that went beyond training. “Merciful?” he repeated, stepping closer, closing the distance between them. “I don’t feel any mercy from you, Lyra.”
Her breath caught in her throat. She wasn’t supposed to be flustered, she was supposed to be the queen, the leader, the unstoppable force of fire and shadow but here, in the quiet courtyard, with Dante so close, all of that authority seemed fragile.
“You’re… impossible,” she said finally, her voice softer than she intended.
“And you love it,” he replied, a teasing lilt in his voice, but his eyes betrayed a sincerity that made her heart stutter.
They moved again, claws clashing, brushing more frequently, each contact sending a spark that neither could deny. Lyra caught herself staring at him. His face, his eyes, the way he carried both power and tenderness effortlessly. She felt the pull, magnetic, undeniable.
Dante noticed. The corner of his lips lifted in a knowing smile, just slightly, just enough to make her aware that she had been caught. “You’ve been staring,” he said, voice low and teasing, but laced with something deeper, something almost vulnerable.
Lyra’s cheeks flushed hot, and she looked away, trying to regain composure. “I… I was focusing,” she muttered, though the truth of her lingering gaze betrayed her words.
He stepped closer, brushing the tip of his sword against hers, deliberately close. “Focusing,” he echoed, his eyes locking with hers, dark and intense. “I see.”
Her heart raced, a mix of exhilaration, fear, and something she hadn’t allowed herself in months to desire. It was slow, smoldering, a fire that didn’t need to explode immediately but threatened to ignite at any moment.
They continued their training, every move more deliberate, more intimate. Words became sparse, replaced with glances, subtle touches, and the electricity that lingered in the air between them. Each small interaction built tension, each shared smile and teasing remark a step toward something neither dared to name fully.
Finally, they paused, both breathing heavily, claws lowered. Lyra leaned on hers for support, chest heaving slightly, eyes avoiding his but feeling his gaze like a physical weight.
“You’ve been quiet,” Dante said softly, moving just close enough for her to feel his warmth. “Tell me what’s going on in that head of yours.”
Lyra swallowed, heart pounding. “I… don’t know if I should,” she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t… I can’t afford to lose myself.”
“You won’t lose yourself,” he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly against the back of her hand. “Not with me.”
Her chest tightened. She wanted to lean in, to close the distance, to let the tension snap into something undeniable, but she pulled back slightly, trying to regain c
ontrol.
And then she realized with a jolt that she had been caught.
