Chapter 52 This Is Serious

Chapter 52 This Is Serious

Someone laughed.
The sound crawled out of the darkness beneath the ruins.
Slow.
Deep.
Amused.
Not the laughter of a monster.
Not the laughter of a madman.
The laughter of someone who had just walked into a room full of people he already knew.
And that terrified everyone.
Because monsters were predictable.
Ancient enemies were not.
The crack running through the palace floor widened.
Stone shattered.
Dust erupted into the air.
The ruins trembled beneath their feet.
Lena instinctively stepped backward.
Caleb immediately moved beside her.
Not in front.
Beside.
Like he already knew she wouldn't tolerate being shielded anymore.
A small detail.
But she noticed.
The silver mark on her wrist continued glowing.
The light pulsed in rhythm with the tremors beneath the ground.
Almost like it was responding.
Recognizing something.
Or someone.
Then the laughter came again.
Closer.
Much closer.
A hand appeared.
Human.
Just a hand.
Pale fingers gripping the edge of broken stone.
Then another hand.
Then a man slowly pulled himself from the darkness.
The entire ruin froze.
Lena stared.
This was Valerian?
The terrifying name that had made kings pale?
The ancient threat everyone feared?
The man looked...
Normal.
Annoyingly normal.
Dark hair.
Black coat.
Tall.
Handsome in the irritating way mysterious people always seemed to be.
No glowing eyes.
No giant weapon.
No supernatural aura.
Nothing.
Just a man climbing out of a giant crack in the earth.
He dusted off his sleeves.
Looked around.
Then smiled.
"Oh."
His voice was warm.
Pleasant.
Friendly.
"I was hoping some of you would still be alive."
Nobody spoke.
Valerian looked disappointed.
"Come on."
He spread his arms.
"We haven't seen each other in years."
"Centuries."
Jacob whispered.
Valerian immediately pointed at him.
"Thank you."
Jacob looked startled.
"I wasn't talking to you."
"Still appreciated."
The interaction was so absurd that Lena almost laughed.
Almost.
Then she noticed Caelum.
The king looked furious.
Not scared anymore.
Furious.
Pure rage burned in his eyes.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because until now, every mention of Valerian had inspired fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
But Caelum looked like he wanted blood.
Valerian noticed too.
The smile widened.
"Ah."
His eyes gleamed.
"There's the face I remember."
Caelum took a step forward.
The ground cracked beneath him.
"You're supposed to be dead."
Valerian laughed.
Actually laughed.
A genuine amused laugh.
"Apparently I'm terrible at dying."
The stranger from the forest groaned.
"Oh, not this again."
Valerian looked delighted.
"You too?"
The stranger folded his arms.
"I buried you myself."
"Clearly you did a poor job."
"I buried you under a mountain."
"And yet here I am."
The stranger rubbed his forehead.
Like he was developing a headache.
Lena honestly couldn't blame him.
Then Adrian spoke.
For the first time since revealing himself.
"What do you want?"
Immediately the atmosphere changed.
Valerian's smile softened.
Not disappeared.
Softened.
His gaze shifted toward Adrian.
Then toward Lena.
Then back to Adrian.
Recognition flashed through his eyes.
Old recognition.
Painful recognition.
Then he sighed.
"I was wondering when you'd figure it out."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Answer the question."
Valerian studied him for a moment.
Then nodded.
Fair enough.
"I came for her."
Every person in the ruins tensed.
Every single one.
Lena was beginning to get very tired of being the center of everyone's problems.
Valerian pointed at her.
Not aggressively.
Almost casually.
Like he was discussing the weather.
"I came for Lena."
The mark on her wrist immediately flared brighter.
Silver light surged beneath her skin.
Valerian noticed.
And smiled.
Not cruelly.
Not triumphantly.
Almost proudly.
Which was somehow worse.
Much worse.
Then Seraphine stepped forward.
"No."
The word echoed through the ruins.
Valerian looked at her.
For several seconds.
Just looked.
Then his expression changed.
The amusement vanished.
Gone.
Instantly.
For the first time since appearing, he looked serious.
Truly serious.
And suddenly Lena understood something.
Valerian didn't hate Caelum.
He didn't hate Adrian.
He didn't hate the stranger.
But Seraphine...
Something happened there.
Something bad.
The tension between them felt different.
Sharper.
Older.
Personal.
Then Valerian spoke.
Quietly.
"You really think you get a vote?"
The queen visibly flinched.
The reaction shocked everyone.
Including Lena.
Because Seraphine didn't seem like the kind of person who flinched.
Ever.
Yet she had.
Then Caelum moved.
Positioning himself between them.
Immediately.
Instinctively.
Protectively.
Valerian laughed.
"There he is."
His gaze drifted toward the king.
"Always late."
Caelum's expression darkened.
"You disappeared."
Valerian smiled.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"No, I didn't."
The ruins became silent.
Again.
Then Valerian's eyes swept across everyone present.
The Ash Court.
The Wolf Court.
The rescued students.
The stranger.
Caleb.
Adrian.
Finally Lena.
Then he spoke words that instantly changed the mood.
"I was imprisoned."
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody interrupted.
Valerian looked amused by their reactions.
"You all knew that."
His gaze settled on Caelum.
"Some of you arranged it."
The accusation hit hard.
Very hard.
Because nobody denied it.
Nobody.
Lena's pulse quickened.
Another secret.
Another buried truth.
Another lie.
Then Valerian looked at her.
And the smile disappeared completely.
His next words were soft.
Almost gentle.
"Lena."
The way he said her name made something ache inside her chest.
Like hearing a song she couldn't remember.
Like recognizing a face in a dream.
Then a memory hit.
Suddenly.
Violently.
A garden.
Sunlight.
Flowers.
A little girl laughing.
Someone sitting beside her.
A man reading a book.
Dark hair.
Warm eyes.
Valerian.
The memory shattered.
Lena froze.
No.
No way.
That wasn't possible.
Valerian saw her reaction.
And closed his eyes briefly.
Pain flickering across his face.
Real pain.
Then he whispered:
"You remember."
Not a question.
A statement.
The realization sent chills through her.
Because she did.
Not much.
Just enough.
Enough to know she had seen him before.
Long before tonight.
Long before the kingdom fell.
Long before everything broke.
Then Adrian noticed her expression.
And immediately looked alarmed.
"Lena."
Too late.
The memories were already coming.
More flashes.
More fragments.
Valerian teaching her something.
Valerian laughing.
Valerian arguing with Caelum.
Valerian carrying her on his shoulders.
The images crashed together.
Fast.
Confusing.
Overwhelming.
Then one final memory emerged.
Clearer than all the others.
A throne room.
A younger Seraphine.
A younger Caelum.
Valerian standing before them.
Angry.
Furious.
And beside him...
A small Lena.
Holding his hand.
The memory sharpened.
Valerian's voice echoed.
"If you do this, you'll destroy everything."
Seraphine crying.
Actually crying.
"We don't have a choice."
"There is always a choice."
"Not this time."
The memory shattered.
Lena gasped.
The ruins returned.
Everyone staring at her.
Waiting.
Watching.
Then she looked at Valerian.
Really looked at him.
And suddenly understood why everyone was terrified.
Not because he was a monster.
Not because he was evil.
Because he knew.
He knew everything.
The kingdom.
The war.
The memories.
The seal.
All of it.
And judging by the way everyone reacted to him...
He was one of the few people left who remembered exactly how it happened.
Then Valerian smiled sadly.
And asked the question nobody wanted asked.
The question that immediately made Seraphine pale.
The question that made Caelum look away.
The question that made Adrian close his eyes.
The question that froze the entire ruin.
"Lena."
His voice was quiet.
Gentle.
Careful.
"Do you want to know who ordered the seal?"
Nobody answered.
Because everybody already knew.
And from the look on their faces...
The answer was about to destroy what little trust remained.
