Chapter 297 THE PLAN SHE LEFT BEHIND

Chapter 297 THE PLAN SHE LEFT BEHIND
POV: Zuri

I stare at Marco.

“My mother planned this?”

He doesn't answer immediately.

He looks at the open grave.

Then at me.

Finally, he nods.

“She knew Antonio would come for you.”

My chest tightens.

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

Marco's eyes drop.

“Because she knew you wouldn't remember.”

The words hit harder than they should.

My mother didn't abandon me.

She prepared for the day someone would take everything from me.

Even my memories.

I look at her grave.

For years, I thought this place held the end of her story.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if it held the beginning of mine.

Ghost and Rex spread through the cemetery, checking every entrance.

Amani stays beside me.

Close enough that I can feel him without looking.

Marco crouches beside the open grave.

“Our mother created several hiding places before she disappeared.”

“The estate,” he says. “The Silver Wolf safehouse. This cemetery.”

I look at him.

“Why so many?”

“Because she didn't trust anyone with the whole truth.”

That sounds like my mother.

Careful.

Always thinking three steps ahead.

Marco points toward the empty compartment beneath the coffin.

“Each location contained a piece of the plan.”

I stare at the opening.

“So nobody could find everything.”

“Exactly.”

A strange thought settles inside me.

“What if it wasn't meant for nobody to find?”

Marco looks at me.

“What do you mean?”

“What if it was meant for me?”

Silence.

Evelyn slowly turns toward us.

My heart starts beating faster.

My mother had hidden pieces of her plan across different places.

The estate.

The safehouse.

The cemetery.

And every clue had somehow led me here.

Only me.

I whisper,

“She knew I'd come back.”

Marco doesn't deny it.

“She knew you might.”

My throat tightens.

“She planned for me to forget.”

Marco's expression changes.

“She planned for you to survive.”

Marco reaches into the space beneath the coffin.

“There was something here.”

“What?”

“I found the compartment years ago.”

He runs his fingers across the dusty metal.

“Whatever was inside is gone.”

I kneel beside him.

The inside is almost completely empty.

Almost.

There is a faint rectangular outline in the dust.

Something had been there for a long time.

A box.

Or an envelope.

I touch the mark.

The world suddenly tilts.

I gasp.

A memory.

My mother.

Younger.

Alive.

She's kneeling in this same cemetery.

Her hands are shaking as she places a small envelope inside the compartment.

I'm standing beside her.

Small.

Confused.

She looks directly at me.

Her eyes are full of tears.

Then she smiles.

“If you ever come back here…”

Her voice trembles.

“…it means they failed to keep you away.”

The memory flickers.

My mother's hand touches my cheek.

“You're stronger than you know.”

Then darkness.

I jerk my hand away.

Amani catches my shoulder.

“Zuri.”

I breathe hard.

“She knew.”

“Who?”

“That I would come back.”

Marco closes his eyes.

For once, my brother looks like a man carrying a weight he has carried for too long.

“She believed you would survive.”

Marco reaches inside his jacket.

“I kept this.”

He pulls out a tiny piece of paper.

My eyes narrow.

“What is that?”

“It was caught beneath the coffin lining.”

He unfolds it carefully.

Most of it is destroyed.

Only three words remain.

TRUST THE KING.

My eyes move to Amani.

He is already looking at me.

Neither of us speaks.

Marco shakes his head.

“Don't assume it means the Iron Kings.”

“Why?”

“Mother used code.”

He points at the words.

“King wasn't always a person. Sometimes it meant a position. Sometimes a location.”

I take the paper from him.

“Then who was the King?”

Marco's jaw tightens.

“I don't know.”

For a man who always seems to have an answer, that scares me.

Amani steps closer.

“Then we find out.”

Marco looks at him.

“There may be another clue.”

“Where?”

“The mausoleum.”

Ghost immediately turns toward it.

“Already checked.”

Marco shakes his head.

“Not the outside.”

His eyes move to the stone.

“Look for a crown.”

Ghost and Rex search the mausoleum again.

Minutes later, Rex calls out.

“Found something.”

We move toward him.

Near the bottom of the stone wall is a small carving.

A crown.

Underneath it is the Silver Wolf symbol.

My stomach twists.

“I've seen that before.”

Evelyn looks at me.

“Where?”

“In Father's records.”

I remember the old ledgers.

Rows of names.

Accounts.

Businesses.

Numbers.

Some entries had symbols beside them.

The crown.

I never understood what it meant.

Until now.

“It marked accounts Antonio considered untouchable.”

Marco's expression darkens.

“Untouchable?”

I nod.

“People he couldn't threaten. Businesses he couldn't control. Places he couldn't simply take.”

Evelyn studies the symbol.

“Your mother wasn't only hiding from Antonio.”

A cold realization moves through me.

“She was building something.”

A network.

Safe places.

People.

Money.

Information.

Protection.

A system strong enough to survive Antonio.

My mother had been preparing for a war I didn't even know existed.

And somehow...

I had been part of the plan.

Amani turns toward me.

“We can leave.”

I look at him.

“We investigate this later. Tonight has already given us enough.”

I shake my head.

“No.”

His expression stays calm.

“Zuri.”

“I spent years being told who I was.”

I look at the grave.

“My father decided what I knew.”

“My family decided what I remembered.”

“Other people decided where I belonged.”

My fingers close around the torn message.

TRUST THE KING.

“I won't let them decide what happens next.”

Amani studies me.

Then he nods.

“Then we do it your way.”

Something inside me softens.

He doesn't tell me what to do.

He doesn't try to protect me from the truth.

He simply stands beside me.

For once...

the choice is mine.

Marco takes out his phone and studies the crown symbol.

“I know where this points.”

Ghost looks at him.

“Where?”

“An old Moretti property.”

My pulse quickens.

“Where?”

“Outside the city.”

Marco looks uncomfortable.

“Antonio stopped using it years ago.”

“Why?”

“Our mother controlled it.”

That gets everyone's attention.

Amani steps closer.

“Does anyone still use it?”

Marco shakes his head.

“Not officially.”

“Unofficially?”

He looks toward the road.

“I don't know.”

Ghost's eyes narrow.

“You think someone is still there?”

“I think someone may have been protecting the place.”

I stare at him.

“Who?”

Marco doesn't answer.

Instead, he looks toward the cemetery entrance.

“But someone knew we'd come here tonight.”

A cold feeling crawls down my spine.

The open grave.

The missing compartment.

The hidden symbol.

The gunshot.

Someone had been watching.

And they knew exactly where we'd be.

Before we leave, I walk back to my mother's grave.

Everyone gives me space.

I kneel.

For years, I couldn't say anything to her.

I didn't know what to say.

Now I finally do.

“I don't remember everything.”

My voice shakes.

“But I'm going to.”

I place my palm against the cold stone.

“And this time…”

I swallow.

“…nobody gets to choose what I forget.”

The wind moves through the trees.

For one second, I imagine her beside me.

Telling me to be brave.

I close my eyes.

“I'll find the truth, Mom.”

Then I stand.

Amani is waiting.

He doesn't ask if I'm ready.

He already knows.

We are almost at the cemetery gate when Ghost stops.

“Wait.”

He crouches.

Something is tucked beneath the gate.

A small black envelope.

No name.

No address.

No fingerprints.

My heart starts racing.

Ghost hands it to Amani.

Amani opens it.

Inside is a photograph.

I take it.

My breath catches.

My mother.

Young.

Alive.

Standing beside Marco.

But they're not alone.

There is another man in the photograph.

His face has been scratched out.

I turn the photograph over.

One sentence is written across the back.

YOUR MOTHER TRUSTED HIM WITH YOUR LIFE.

My fingers tighten around the picture.

At the bottom is a date.

SIX YEARS AGO.

The same year I disappeared.

I slowly look at Marco.

His face has gone completely pale.

“Who is he?”

Marco says nothing.

Not a word.

Amani steps toward him.

“Marco.”

Still nothing.

I look at the scratched-out face again.

Something about the man's shape feels familiar.

Too familiar.

“Marco…”

My voice drops.

“Who is he?”

Finally, my brother looks at me.

Fear fills his eyes.

And that's when I know.

He knows exactly who this man is.
