CH- 45
Lorien POV

The word sears through the hall like a brand.
“SHE IS MINE.”

Aria’s scream still claws at my ears. Students writhe on the floor, sigils burning, their skin blistered with silver fire. Sebastian is grinning like the lunatic he is, drunk on the chaos. And I—
I can’t move.

Because the fire around her crown wasn’t just flame. It was power. Old. Ancient. Wrong.

She collapses forward. My arms are already there, catching her before her face hits the stone. She’s shaking, eyes glazed, lips mouthing words only the Third can hear.
“Aria,” I breathe, gripping her too tightly. “Look at me. Stay with me.”

And then—bootsteps. Heavy. Measured. Unhurried.

Kael Thorne.

The new Trials Master doesn’t flinch at the wreckage or the students groaning at his feet. He doesn’t even blink at the fire still curling from Aria’s crown. He just watches me with storm-grey eyes that say he’s already weighed me and found me lacking.

“You’ve lost control of her,” Kael says simply.

The words dig straight under my ribs. “She’s not mine to control.”

He tilts his head. “That’s where you’re wrong.” His gaze flicks to Sebastian, then back to me. “You think this academy will allow a girl—your bond—to wield that crown without leash or master?”

My fangs ache. Rage simmers just under my skin. But I know better than to strike at a man like him. His stance is too perfect, his tone too calm. Kael Thorne is a predator who’s already thought three moves ahead.

Behind him, Professor Sera Duvall emerges, her usually cold face pinched with something too raw to name. Her eyes meet Kael’s for half a second—half a second too long.

The silence between them is weighted. Familiar.
Sebastian laughs, slow and mocking. “Oh, I like this one. He’ll tear you apart, Lorien, and I won’t even have to lift a fang.”

“Shut your mouth,” I snap.

Kael doesn’t even look at Sebastian. He steps closer to me, close enough that the heat of his body brushes mine. Every muscle in me coils, ready.

“You will report to me at dawn,” he says. Not a request. A command. “We’ll see if you’re worthy to stand beside her when the Trials begin.”

I bare my teeth. “And if I don’t?”

His smile is a blade. “Then you’ll be replaced.”

The weight of the word slams into me. Not just threatened. Promised.

Sera’s voice cuts low, sharp, but not toward Kael—toward me. “He’s right, Lorien. If you can’t anchor her, the academy will bind her to someone who can.”
My grip tightens on Aria’s limp form. Anchor her? She isn’t a storm to be tied down. She’s fire. Crown. Power. Mine.

Sebastian leans against the wall, fangs glinting in the firelight, and drawls, “Careful, Lorien. Sounds like someone’s already circling your throne.”

My vision goes red.

But before I can snarl another word, Aria’s eyes snap open—glowing silver.

She isn’t breathing.

Her lips part, and the Third’s voice pours out again, deeper this time, a growl that rattles the hall’s stone walls.

“SIX NIGHTS. SHE BURNS, OR YOU BREAK.”

Her body convulses in my arms. The crown blazes brighter.

And Kael?
Kael just smiles.

Aria’s body seizes with silver fire in Lorien’s arms, the Third speaking through her again—his voice low and resonant, layered over hers like a second heartbeat.

The words are foreign, guttural, yet they ripple through the hall with an authority that makes even the shadows seem to bow.

Her fingers twitch spasmodically, nails clawing at Lorien’s forearms hard enough to draw blood, but he doesn’t let go. He can’t.

Whatever’s happening isn’t just inside her anymore—it’s spreading outward, reaching for all of us.

And Kael… Kael simply stands there, calm and smiling, as if this is exactly what he’s been waiting for.

His hands rest loosely at his sides, though I notice the faint tightening of his knuckles—as if he’s resisting the urge to intervene or perhaps claim control himself.

His expression remains unreadable, save for the smallest flicker of satisfaction dancing behind his storm-grey eyes.

When Sera steps out of the shadowed alcove, her face is drawn and pale, lips pressed into a thin line that betrays something she desperately wants to keep hidden.

“Kael,” she says sharply, cutting through the tension like glass breaking. Not Professor Thorne. Not Trials Master. Just his name.

It lands heavy in the hall.

His head turns toward her, slow and deliberate, those storm-grey eyes softening just slightly—only for a moment. It’s fleeting, almost imperceptible, but it’s there: a crack in the armor, a vulnerability neither of them intended to show. For the barest heartbeat, the edge of command fades from him, replaced by something softer, more human.

And then, as if realizing how much he’s revealed, he straightens again, his posture rigid, his features smoothing back into their usual mask of indifference.

Too late.

I saw it. Everyone saw it.

Sebastian’s grin widens, vicious and gleeful, sharp teeth flashing in the dim light. “Oh, this keeps getting better,” he drawls, leaning casually against the wall once more, though there’s a glint in his eye that suggests he’s already plotting how to use whatever he’s just witnessed.

His gaze darts between Kael and Sera, savoring the unspoken tension thick enough to choke on.

Sera flushes, almost imperceptibly, her hand moving instinctively to pull her robe tighter at the throat. She avoids looking directly at him now, focusing instead on Aria—or maybe pretending to—but the air between them still hums with something electric, dangerous. Something unfinished.

Kael doesn’t look at her again either, though the set of his jaw tightens fractionally, betraying the effort it takes to maintain his composure. But the damage is done.

Whatever connection exists between them—a shared history, a buried secret, a forbidden alliance—it’s written plain as day across both their faces now, exposed for anyone who cares to read it.

Aria’s body convulses in my arms, silver fire writhing under her skin like something trying to claw its way out.

Her lips part, and it isn’t her voice that spills out—
“HE IS ALREADY HERE,” the Third’s voice still echoing through the hall.

The fire in her crown dies. She collapses, unconscious.

And then at the far end of the hall, the great doors creak open.

A girl steps inside. Silver hair catching the torchlight. A smile too calm for the carnage around her.

Kael’s gaze flicks to her, unreadable. Sera stiffens. Sebastian laughs low in his throat.

The crowd turns toward her, whispering, voices swelling into a sharp murmur—
because of what she’s carrying.
