Chapter 87 Grades
Chapter 87 Grades
Salvatore’s POV
Hours earlier
“Why did you do that to Lyra?” I asked, my chest heaving as I spoke.
Becky’s eyes narrowed, her gaze fell on my trembling hands. “Do you like the maid’s daughter?”
My chest froze. “W…what?” I stuttered.
“It’s a simple question,” she stood and walked to me. “Do you like the maid’s daughter?”
“Of course not,” I lied.
I never thought there would come a day when I would deny my feelings for Lyra, but if Becky knew she would tell dad and that meant trouble.
“Better,” she spoke. “That still doesn’t explain why you are so protective of her.”
“We don’t hurt our maids,” I growled.
Her eyebrows rose. I noticed a wrinkle from the corner of her eyes. “Really?”
“Yes.”
“Well, it’s a new era, don’t you think?”
My head tilted to the side. She felt no remorse whatsoever?
She suddenly erupted into loud laughter. “I surely hope you do not like her. You seem to care too much about her. You’ll marry Mia, you know that, right?”
I stayed silent, my throat dried up as I parted my lips to speak, but the gentle knock on the door cut me short.
I turned and watched Lyra walk in. She bowed her head and placed the tray of food on the table.
I heard loud laughter downstairs and suddenly realized that it was Mia and her friends.
I sighed loudly and walked out of the room. “Tell her I’m sick and cannot come out,” I said to Lyra and walked into my bedroom.
All I could do was pace around the room like a madman. Lyra was in my head.
If only Lyra was born in a wealthy family, things would be easy. I slumped into bed with my eyes fixed on the ceiling.
Should I tell dad?
He would be furious.
A gentle knock on my door made me sit up. “Mia?” I hesitated before I spoke, but the words slipped out.
The doorknob twisted and Lyra stepped in, her face downcast. “…she left.”
“I wasn’t…,” I sighed. “How is your hand? How does it feel?”
I wiggled it. “Fine.”against
I didn’t like how far away she stood from me. I stepped forward to inch closer, but she pulled back the door. “Salvatore, we can’t be together…”
The loud slam of my fist against a table beside us forced her to look in my direction. “…Salvatore,” her eyebrows furrowed.
“Lyra, why are you doing this to me?” I asked, tears in my eyes. “I love you,” I said with all the strength I had in me.
“And I love you too, but your family,” she sniffed. “Do you know that your dad hurt my mother?”
My eyes widened. “Today?”
“Does it matter what day it was?” She shook her head. “Back in London…” her voice cracked. I watched her cheeks turn red. “I remembered a burn on her wrist. She hid it from me, but I said nothing because it’s not your fault.”
“Lyra, I don’t know what to say.”
“Nothing you say matters, Sal.”
Sal… she has never called me that before. I watched with gnashed teeth as she took off the necklace Nana gave her and placed it on a table beside her.
“Lyra…”
“Don’t make this harder than it has to be, Sal,” she begged. “Mother was right. Rich people hurt poor people.”
“You are not poor, Lyra,” I rubbed my eyes as I spoke.
“Your family has Mia for you.” I walked to her. She immediately tried to open the door, but I kicked it shut. She turned her back to me and wept.
My hand slowly brushed her shoulders. “I don’t want Mia… only you.”
“You can’t have me. Mia will keep coming and…” she choked.
I placed a gentle kiss on her shoulder. She brushed me off and stormed out of the room.
I wanted to follow, but somebody could see.
I stepped back into the bedroom and walked to the desk where she had placed the necklace. I grabbed it, unable to control my sobs. I walked to the bed.
Two days later,
I hadn’t stepped out of my bedroom, nor had I seen Lyra these past two days.
I avoided Mia at the school’s entrance and walked into school.
“Mr. Salvatore, just who I wanted to see,” a voice said behind me. I turned and saw my homeroom teacher behind me. My heart skipped a beat as I saw Lyra behind her.
“We need to talk about your grades.”
Oh… that’s right. I have been failing classes.
