Chapter 86 Jackson leaves
I stayed on the ground crying my eyes out.
How could she be so mean?
My pale skin had turned red from the burn. As I cried, Salvatore rushed into the bedroom. His eyes searched the place before they landed on me. “What happened?” he asked. As his eyes touched my hand, he realized what had happened.
“Becky!” he growled loudly. “Why would you do this to her?”
Becky sat on the bed and crossed her legs. A careless look on her face, she spoke, “She’s only a maid. I was teaching her a lesson. Is there anything wrong with that?” Her tone was calm.
Salvatore moved to me and knelt before me. He brushed my hair off my face. His grey eyes fixed on me, he spoke in a soft voice, “I’m sorry about this.”
Becky raised an eyebrow. “Why do you care so much about her?”
I instantly pulled my hand away from Salvatore’s. “Sorry,” I apologized.
He grabbed my hand again and narrowed his gaze. “What are you sorry about?”
“There was hair in her food. It’s either mine or Mom’s,” I explained.
Salvatore turned to Becky. “It could have been anybody. I have blond hair too.”
“It’s too short to be your hair,” Becky said. “Go to the kitchen and make me new food now.”
I immediately stood up and bowed my head. As I rushed out, I could feel Salvatore’s eyes on me.
Mother had gone to rest. I didn’t want to bother her, so I went straight to the kitchen. As I began to cook, I felt somebody walk into the kitchen.
I turned around. My expression fell as I realized it wasn’t Salvatore. “Jackson,” I swallowed. He had on a black overcoat and a pair of sunglasses. “Are you going out?”
“Spain. Are you willing to come with me?” he asked with a smile.
I smiled back. “I’m guessing your dad’s company needs you.”
“And college,” he added.
“Why did you choose Spain for college?” I asked. “Oh… because you have a company to run.”
He nodded and inched closer to me. I immediately looked away as his lips drew closer to mine. “Don’t start,” I said.
“When I leave, I’m not sure when I’ll return,” he said as he took a step back.
I stayed silent, watching as the water in the pot boiled.
“What happened to your hand?” he asked, his face twisting with curiosity.
I slid the hand into my apron. “It’s nothing.”
He took off his sunglasses and put them into his pocket. He inched closer to me and tried to pull my hand away from my apron.
I tightened my hand so that he wouldn’t succeed, but his strength surpassed mine. “Who burned you?”
I said nothing.
“It looks like a cigarette. Salvatore?”
“You know he wouldn’t hurt me,” I explained. “My Sinclair? Becky?”
I shook my head and finally moved his hand away from mine. “I’m okay.”
“I still can’t touch you? But Salvatore can?” he asked.
“You know it’s not like that.” It really wasn’t. I didn’t want him going berserk and getting into a fight with Becky.
“Salvatore is going to marry Mia.”
My chest tightened as I heard those words. It was as if he was rubbing salt on an open wound.
I grabbed a package of spaghetti and tossed it into the boiling water. “I know,” I said.
The thought of what Salvatore had said in the bathroom crossed my mind again. Would he really give up his inheritance for me?
I didn’t like it one bit.
Is this one of those times where a person has to let the people that they love go?
“Argh!” I grunted loudly. My fingers had brushed against the steel pot and it burned me.
He immediately rushed to me and grabbed my hand. He led me to the sink and turned on the tap. “Here,” he said as he began to pour water on it.
Soon my hand felt better. Jackson drew it to his lips and placed a kiss. “I’ll miss you when I leave.”
I pulled away from his touch and took two steps back. “Thank you.”
He slowly turned away and walked off. For some reason, my heart ached to see him go.
I went back to cooking. It was ready a few minutes later. I put the food on a plate and walked out of the kitchen, but halted as I saw Mia in the room. She was dressed in a pleasant skirt and a pair of purple heels.
What is she doing here?
