Chapter 82 The kiss that broke a heart

Chapter 82 The kiss that broke a heart
“Kate, why are you crying?” I moved closer.

She sniffed and wiped her nose with the tissue in her hand. Her eyes were red from tears. “I don't want to talk about it,” she said.

I knelt in front of her. “Nonsense, you can always talk to me. What is it?” I thought for a second. “Mia?”

She shook her head. “My dad's sick,” she sniffed.

Oh, I had thought Mia bullied her.

I patted her back. “Oh my God, what happened?”

“Stroke,” she said, wiping her nose. It had turned red now.

“A stroke? Oh my God, how is he?”

“The doctors said he's going to be alright. It's just sad to see him like that. He's suffering.”

I leaned in to hug her. “I'm so sorry.”

I stayed in the hug for a few seconds before I moved away.

“Can I have a few minutes alone?” she asked.

I pouted. “Yeah,” I said, looking at her pitifully.

I stepped out of the stall. I walked towards the bathroom's main door. As I pulled it open, my legs came to a halt. Before me was William.

He smiled as soon as his eyes met mine. “I thought I saw you walk in,” he said.

“Were you just... waiting here for me?” I stepped out of the bathroom and shut the door behind me.

“I was walking past and heard footsteps.” He leaned in and slid his fingers into mine.

I pulled my hand back and sucked in a breath, my eyes scanning the place.

“Why? Because of Salvatore?”

“Huh?”

“I can't touch you because of him?” he asked.

“You can. It's just...” I swallowed. “I would rather not be held.”

He stepped back. “Can we have dinner at my place today?”

I tilted my head to the side.

“Come on.”

“No, it's not a date. Just dinner with me, a friend. We have a pool and everything.”

“I'm not interested, William,” I said and walked past him.

He followed closely behind me. “Please.”

“No.”

“Please,” he repeated.

“William.”

I felt his hand on my back. “Lyra...” His voice grew raspy, a hint of yearning. I turned to face him, and he gave me cute puppy-dog eyes. “Come on.”

I shook my head. “No.”

As I walked into class, I found Mia sitting beside Salvatore, his hand laid on his chest. Immediately his gaze met mine, he looked away.

Of course he was mad at me. I shattered his heart.

Before I could look away, I caught him grabbing Mia's hand and gripping it tightly against his chest. I felt my chest clench tightly. I was the one who broke up with him. Why am I so jealous?

I looked away and began to walk towards my seat. My head turned to him again. Her hand was still against his chest.

Was he really going to move on?

Oh God, Lyra, of course he did. You pushed him away.

But why did it still hurt so much?

Throughout school that day, her hands were all over him, and he didn't bother to move away. When school ended, I clutched my book against my chest and walked out of school.

I didn't bother to wait for Salvatore to drive me. I headed straight for the road. As I walked, William's voice called out for me.

I stopped and turned. I looked around and saw him walking towards me. “Hey.”

My eyes strolled to Salvatore's car. Instantly, tears clouded my eyes. He stood before Mia, his hand wrapped around her waist and his lips on hers. My lips parted, and I gasped loudly, my hand flying to my mouth.

It felt as if the world was crumbling around me.

William looked back, and his eyes widened with shock. “That prick!” he cursed. He rushed towards Salvatore. “Salvatore!” he shouted. He clenched his fist and landed a punch on Salvatore's face.

Salvatore stumbled backwards and smirked. He wiped his lips with the back of his thumb, and blood followed it.

I saw William shouting. His voice was inaudible from where I stood, but his eyes had turned red, veins popping out from his forehead. He angrily pointed at Mia as he spoke and then back at Salvatore.

Salvatore's eyes met mine. He smiled and winked before he walked towards his car and shut the door. He honked, and Mia quickly got in the car.

William watched as they drove off.

The car sped past me. I instantly dropped to my knees, regretting all my actions. Why did I break up with him?

William rushed to me and knelt before me. “Lyra?” He pulled me into a hug. “Hey, it's okay. It's fine.” He patted my back.

“They are getting married,” I choked.

He pulled away. “What?” He looked into my eyes.

“Salvatore and Mia are engaged,” I sniffed. “They are going to get married once college is done.”

William looked puzzled. “I don't understand...”

“Their parents ordered it. I think Salvatore has finally accepted it,” I said, hot tears strolling down my cheeks.

He cupped my face in his hands. “It's okay. I'm here.”

He lifted me up and led me into his car. I sat in the passenger seat, weeping my eyes out. He said nothing. He just stared quietly at me. He knew I needed the silence.

After a few minutes, I finally stopped sobbing.

“Do you want to sleep at my place?” he asked.

I looked at him.

“It's not a date or whatever. I just want to make sure you are alright. Also, you and Salvatore live in the same home. I'm sure it would be uncomfortable for you.”

I wiped my eyes, but more tears strolled down my cheeks.

“Do you want to think about it?” he asked.

I shook my head. “I shouldn't go home. You're right,” I sniffed.

He grabbed my hand, bringing it to his lips. He kissed it. “Alright.” He started the car and began to drive.

“Do you want to call your mom and tell her you won't be coming home today?” he asked.

“I will,” my throat cracked.

Soon, we arrived at a large white mansion.

We both stepped out of the car. He walked around to me, stood before me, wiped the tears from my eyes, and grabbed my bag. He wore it on top of his own bag, held my hand, and led me inside.

His home looked expensive and large, although not as large as Salvatore's. As we reached the door, he clenched his fingers into a fist and knocked.

I heard immediate footsteps, and the door pulled open. A woman in a maid's uniform stood before us. A smile curved at her lips. “Mr. William, you are back from school.” She stepped out of the way for us to step in.

William led me in, and the woman shut the door behind us.

“Prepare a room for my guest,” he said, his fingers getting tighter around mine. “And get her something to wear,” he said, and the woman bowed.

He soon began to lead me upstairs. The halls echoed as we walked. The house felt empty.

“Where are your parents?”

“Oh, Mom and Dad live overseas,” he said and opened a door, leading me in.

It was a large bedroom with a flowery smell. His bed was large and properly made. He shut the door behind us and tossed our bags on the bed. His hands slid into his pockets as he turned to face me.

“You live alone in this large house?”

He nodded. “Mom and Dad are busy people.”

“Oh...”

He smiled at me. His brown eyes seemed to adore me. I hoped someday his feelings for me would go away and he would find a girl who would love him as much as he loved me.

I tucked my hair behind my ears.

William was a good guy. Too bad my heart was taken, crushed, but taken.
