Chapter 81 Late night talks
Chapter 81 Late night talks
I laid in bed that night, still weeping.
I had never been in a breakup before. I didn't realise it hurt so much. Why was love so painful?
I looked at the clock on the wall. It was 2:00 a.m., and yet I still couldn't sleep. Soon I grew thirsty. I slid out of bed and headed for the kitchen.
The lights were turned off; only a few dim lights remained on. I yawned and made my way to the kitchen. As I turned the lights on, I froze when I saw Salvatore by the sink. He had a glass of water in his hand.
“Salvatore,” I swallowed.
His blonde hair was messy, his grey eyes were fixed on me. He wiped the corner of his lips and tossed the remaining water in the sink, and I watched him move to the cupboard to place it.
I looked away and walked to the refrigerator. I opened it, and cold air hit me instantly. I reached into it and grabbed a bottle of water. I slowly undid the cap, praying silently that he would leave before I finished.
“I don't want to see him in my house again,” Salvatore said.
I knew he was talking of William. “I'll tell him,” I said. “He won't show up anymore.” I placed the bottle into the fridge and shut it closed. I turned around and began to walk out of the kitchen.
“Three days,” he said.
I shut my eyes and exhaled. “Three days what?”
“I left you alone for three days, Lyra. I didn't call nor did I text. I think at least I don't—”
“Salvatore, we can't be together…”
The loud slam of his fist against a table beside us forced me to look in his direction.
“Salvatore.”
“Lyra, why are you doing this to me?” he asked, tears in his eyes. “I love you.”
“And I love you too, but your family,” I sniffed.
“My family, what?”
I exhaled. “We can never truly be happy knowing that we can't end up together.”
“In marriage?” he took another step forward. “Because I don't care what Dad says. I want you. Fuck, Lyra, we are still in fucking high school. Who cares about marriage? When the time comes, I'm old enough to choose who I want.”
He grabbed my arm. “That's you.”
I gently pushed his hand away from me. “This is bigger than the both of us. You know it, I know it, so don't try to deny it. I'm just the daughter of a maid. Mia is the daughter of a wealthy…”
“And?” he cut in.
“And…” I couldn't find the words.
He touched my chin and lifted it to kiss me, but his lips hung over mine. They didn't touch.
“I can't be the only one fighting for us, Lyra. If you aren't trying at all, then…”
I blinked. “Then what?”
“I don't want it either, but if you aren't trying, then I have to let you go.”
My heart felt as if a giant leg had stomped on it. It was what I had wanted to hear from him, that he would let it go, but still, it hurt.
His eyebrows formed a knot, his eyes still only inches away from mine. “You see?”
I gulped. “That you can get over us? Yes.”
His hand moved down my back and gripped my waist so tight you'd think he would die if he let go. “No,” he shook his head. “Not that. You see how stupid that sounded?”
“What?” my throat moved, my eyes growing wide just a little bit.
“I will never give up on us. The thought of me doing that is utterly stupid. Now see how stupid you look?” He brushed my hair, and it slid out of the bun.
“So you are not giving up?” I asked.
He gently pushed me to the side and carried me against a counter. “Never,” he tried to kiss me, but I pushed my head back.
He bowed his head and rubbed his eyes. “Lyra, come on.”
I gently pushed him off, hating that I couldn't kiss him as much as I wanted to. “I'm sorry,” I said and turned away from him.
As I slid off the counter, I could feel his eyes on me. I bowed my head, holding in the tears to stop myself from crying.
A day later,
I left early that day so that I wouldn't run into Salvatore. The school's air felt unfriendly, maybe it was my sad mood.
As I walked deeper into school, my eyes met William by his locker. I quickly turned away and walked into the girls' bathroom to avoid him. I didn't have feelings for him. When would he get that?
I hoped he found somebody soon. He was such a sweet boy, aside from the fact that he wouldn't leave me alone.
As I walked towards the sink, I heard sobs coming from one of the stalls.
I looked back, my eyes narrowing as I began to walk towards it. “Hello?” I pulled the door open. My eyes grew wide as I saw Kate sitting on the toilet seat with tears in her eyes.
“Kate?” I asked in shock.
