Chapter 452
Chapter 452
N'zar
The car came to a halt with the precision of vehicles driven by those who have learned that the way one stops conveys information that certain ways of stopping reveal something about the person inside, and that the stop is therefore not merely the end of movement but the beginning of a presence.
The door opened.
And N'zar descended with that quality of movement of N'zar in open spaces that was different from the quality of his movements indoors, that there was in him when he was outside any built structure a different lightness, as if the sky above and the space around him created a geometry that he inhabited in a way that ceilings and walls did not fully allow.
The savannah existed all around with that presence of landscapes that don't ask to be noticed because they don't need to be, that exist with the authority of things that were there before anything else and that will be there afterward, and in that expanse of dry land and grass and scattered trees that spread as far as the eye could see and beyond, there was a quality of permanence that gently contradicted the impermanence of everything that happened within it.
The sun was scorching.
It wasn't the late afternoon sun with that golden, revered quality that had graced the property earlier; it was the peak sun, with all the authoritative heat that peaks possess, descending from above with a verticality that leaves no shade sufficient for anything to escape completely, existing as a physical presence over the shoulders and over the head and over any exposed surface with that insistence that the scorching sun has of not being ignored.
N'zar showed no sign of discomfort.
There was something about him that existed within the extreme heat without the air of someone suffering from it; having grown up in climates where such temperatures were the norm rather than the exception, he moved through them with the natural ease of someone who belongs to an environment before even stepping into it.
His wrist was exposed. With that automatic gesture of someone checking their watch, which exists before any conscious decision to check because the checking had already been decided before the gesture arrived, N'zar's eyes met the watch face with that quick reading of someone who needs no more than a second to process the information the display offers.
"He’s late."
The words came out loud, but with the quality of words spoken to oneself, existing in the space between thought and conversation, having no recipient beyond the surrounding air, and there was in them a quality of realization that wasn't exactly irritation, but which carried within it the record of someone who had calculated a time and had arrived at that time, and who expected the same respect for punctuality to exist on the other side.
The surrounding savannah possessed a specific silence characteristic of open landscapes, distinct from the silence of enclosed spaces. The silence there holds within it the sound of the wind through the grass and the distant sounds of something alive somewhere unseen yet audible. Within that inhabited silence lay the quality of a place not empty, but waiting, existing in that specific state before something happened.
And then, the voice came.
Not from the car, not from a direction that had been monitored, but from somewhere in the savanna that had been empty when N'zar arrived, or that had seemed empty with that quality of certain presences that exist within open landscapes without being identified until the moment they choose to be identified.
"No, I’m not."
The words came across with a specific quality of voice, that of someone young but who had developed within that youth a layer of something that wasn't youth, something that existed with a presence that contradicted the expectations created by age, and there was a lightness in them that was also, beneath the lightness, a confidence.
N'zar turned around. With that kind of movement, as if turning around not because they were surprised, but because the direction of what deserves attention has changed and attention is going where it deserves to go, and there was in the turning around the absence of surprise that would be expected in anyone else who had heard a voice coming from a direction they hadn't been monitoring, communicating that N'zar had calculated the possibility of this arrival before it arrived.
The young man approached.
He possessed that quality found in people who inhabit such environments with the natural air of someone raised within them people who didn't need to learn the ways of the savanna because the savanna had been their first lesson, moving across the land with the lightness of someone who belongs there before they even dwell there. She was young, with that youthfulness that hasn't quite finished arriving at what it will be, but that has already left behind what came before, existing in that specific interval between the two things with a quality that was itself a form of presença.
