Chapter 131
Mia's POV
Adrian's stubbornness to this issue has been a source of tiredness to everything that concerned me.
His reluctance to let me go and the desperation he was showcasing was an intruder in the very little life I was trying to build back up.
I had managed to get a safe house, after being helped so graciously by my friend, Sophia, but here he was, here. Right here in my ‘safe house’, not accepting that I did not want anything to do with his world. The Mafia world.
I was not going to let my child grow up in that vile community. The money they made was not enough to make up for ruining almost every member's life.
I was willing to die for my child, but I was also willing to live for him. I could not let Adrian and his glittering attributes block that.
He sat on the sofa, looking uncomfortable from the position he was in, talking to me about how he was willing to go the extra mile to protect us. All I had to was trust him with everything I had in me, after all, if we did not have trust, what then did we have?
I looked on at him. He seemed to think I had distrust.
What he failed to understand was, I trusted him in the sense of the word, I just did not trust his world.
I could not let love or a likeness for someone blind my eyes towards the imminent danger that their world posed and so, I put it out to him, saying it in the most clear words ever, “I need you to leave the Mafia.”
He moved back, reeling from the shock that was caused by my words. I understood those words were heavy.
They were. I was asking him to leave a world he was born into. A world which he has known for a time as long as his existence. The only world he has known. Surely, those words yielded great impact. But the meaning of the words were necessary if we were to go on to be a proper couple.
I was not a member myself, but I was going through it here and I could not let my child experience the same, or worse.
He looked at me, a look of resignation in his eyes and then, it was no longer there.
I needed to know what he thought, but he was not saying anything. He needed to say something, especially since what he said next determines my next step.
“Come on, Adrian. Say something. You are silent and that is not needed right now.”
I sounded harsh, even to my own ears, but I needed to stand on business and be a mother to my unborn child.
He looked on, making it clear that he was not ready to make a decision right now. It was a hard one and I clearly understood him.
He stood up, eyes on me still. He looked dominating and too tall and I stood up to attempt to match his height, but who was I kidding? He was inches taller than I was.
I could never be as tall as he was, even in heels.
“I will see you soon.” Those were his only words and even though I was disappointed a little, I understood him.
I was asking him to take on a new life totally and that has never been easy for any human.
He moved back, making his way towards the door, before turning his back on me. “How much time do I have, to think about this?” I heard him ask me.
Giving him a close ultimatum was going to outright cruel. I needed to give him time to think about it. I only hoped he did not take so much of it, though.
“Take your time.” I responded.
I had no idea the effect my demand had on him. Was he ever going to actually think about it?
What if he takes up too much time than I could actually handle and I end up regretting telling him to take as much time s he could manage?
What if he makes his decision so fast and it's against me, would that not further drive us apart?
Maybe, him taking up so much time was going to be better, since he had a chance to think about our future together.
I did not know what else to think and so I sat back down, not knowing what would make me feel more better; leaving the tears in or not, or just eating up a whole bucket of ice cream.
The latter seemed like the easiest option and I opted for that. I was going to get my sugar levels so high as a result, but I did not care. It had to be better than crying, or holding back the tears and it definitely had to be better than taking alcohol.
I got up from my spot at the couch headed for my kitchen and going straight to the fridge.
I looked through and what I wanted was staring back at me and I reached out for it.
I could worry about the effects later.
I stood by the counter, took out a spoon and dipped in the tub, throwing all caution to the wind.
The first spoon and it melted right in my mouth in the most relaxing and comforting way possible.
The coldness made my mouth almost numb, but I went at it, eating to my fill and to my satisfaction, not stopping till I was on the last spoon.
The tears came then.
What I had asked of him was too much, even for him. Of course, he was not going to pick me over an empire that has been up for decades, over an empire that was passed down and over one that he had toiled relentlessly for.
What was I even thinking, asking him to choose? Who did I think I was?
For a moment there, I never thought about the regret he would feel about being with him if it came to that.
Perhaps, I was being too selfish asking him to pick.
