Chapter 33 (Aura)
I sit on the couch, trying to keep myself calm. The stress of the past few days threatens to overwhelm me, but I force it down. I need to stay strong, stay focused.
When Enzo walks in, I can tell immediately that something's wrong. His face is grim, his shoulders tense. I stand up, concern and curiosity warring inside me.
"What is it?" I ask. "What's wrong?"
Enzo's eyes meet mine, and the intensity in them makes my breath catch. "We need to leave," he says. "Now."
I blink, taken aback by the urgency in his voice. "Leave? Why? What happened?"
He crosses the room in a few quick strides, taking my hands in his. The gesture is both comforting and unsettling. "Do you trust me?" he asks, his voice low and serious.
The question catches me off guard. My mind races, trying to process everything that's happening. Is this the moment I've been waiting for? The turning point in our relationship?
I think about everything Enzo has done for me. How he's protected me, respected my autonomy even when he didn't have to. He's given me choices, treated me like a person instead of property. And now he's asking me to trust him completely.
"Yes," I say softly. "I trust you."
Relief flashes across his face. "Good. Because we need to go right now. I'm going to pack our things, and then we're getting out of here."
"Where are we going?" I ask, but Enzo's already moving towards the bedroom.
"I'll explain everything soon," he calls over his shoulder. "Just get ready to leave."
I nod, even though he can't see me. "Okay," I say, louder this time. "I'm ready."
Enzo pauses in the doorway, turning back to look at me. He crosses the room again and kisses me softly on the lips. "We're going to get out of this," he murmurs. "I promise I'll keep you safe."
Then he's gone again, disappearing into the bedroom to pack. I stand there for a moment, feeling oddly calm despite the chaos swirling around me. As I look around the apartment, I realize I have nothing to pack. Everything I owned was lost when I was taken.
But maybe that's okay. Maybe I don't need any of those old things anymore. My old life is gone - my family, my home, everything I knew. There's no point in clinging to the past out of fear. It's time to move forward, wherever that might lead.
I know we're in danger. Giacomo is still out there, and he won't give up easily. And Enzo... I can sense the conflict in him, torn between his loyalty to me and his ties to the mob. Something must have happened to make him take such drastic action now.
A few minutes later, Enzo emerges from the bedroom carrying two duffel bags. He tosses one to me. "Clothes," he says. "We'll stop and get more if we need to."
I catch the bag, slinging it over my shoulder. "What's in the other one?" I ask, nodding towards the bag he's holding.
Enzo grins, a flash of his usual cockiness breaking through the tension. "My two favorite things," he says. "Guns and money."
I can't help but laugh. I walk over and kiss him on the mouth, feeling an unexpected surge of excitement and giddiness. It's ridiculous to feel this way given our situation, but I can't help it. Maybe it's the promise of freedom, or just being with Enzo. Whatever it is, I feel more alive than I have in years.
"Come on," Enzo says, smiling down at me. "Let's get out of here."
"Ready when you are," I reply.
Enzo takes my hand, and we leave the apartment without bothering to lock the door behind us. As we walk down the hall, I can't help but look around in wonder. This is the first time I've left that apartment without being tied up or blindfolded. I feel like a normal person again.
Enzo's neighborhood is quiet, almost eerily so given everything that's happened. We walk for a few blocks until Enzo stops in front of a black pickup truck that's seen better days.
"This is mine," he says with a grin. "What do you think?"
I eye the beat-up vehicle. "It's... nice," I say diplomatically.
Enzo laughs. "I bought it used a few years back. Don't use it much, but it comes in handy sometimes."
"Why'd you buy it if you don't use it?" I ask as we climb in.
He shrugs, starting the engine. "Wanted a truck. Seemed like a good idea at the time."
We drive through South Philly traffic, Enzo glancing over at me every few minutes with a small smile. At a red light, I finally call him on it.
"What?" I ask. "Why do you keep looking at me like that?"
"Nothing," he says. "It's just... this feels very normal, doesn't it?"
I laugh, realizing he's right. "Yeah, it does. Except for the part where we're running from the mob."
"Minor detail," Enzo says with a wink.
As we drive, I find myself relaxing despite the circumstances. The familiar sights and sounds of the city make me feel at home again, like nothing bad ever happened. But I know that's not true. We're still in danger, still running from people who want to hurt us.
Still, I can't deny that I feel better than I have in a long time - even before I was kidnapped. My old life might have been comfortable, but it lacked purpose. I was drifting, content to live in a fantasy world where everything was perfect as long as I didn't look too closely.
I was willing to ignore the cracks in my family's facade, to pretend that everything was fine as long as it didn't directly affect me. But after my parents died, it was like I woke up for the first time. I saw the world for what it really was - brutal and beautiful in equal measure.
And Enzo... he brought both of those things into sharp focus. The good and the bad, the light and the dark. He shattered my illusions and made me feel like a real person for the first time in years.
We drive east until we hit the highway, then turn north. As the miles fly by, Enzo fills me in on what happened with Giacomo.
"I tried to buy your freedom," he says, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "Offered him a shitload of money. But he wouldn't go for it."
My heart sinks. "So what happened?"
Enzo's jaw clenches. "Tommaso betrayed us. Went to Giacomo and told him I was getting too close to you. Giacomo gave me three days to 'break you in' or he'd take matters into his own hands."
I gasp. "Tommaso? But he didn't seem like the type to rat us out."
"He didn't outright tell Giacomo about letting you go," Enzo explains. "But he hinted that I might be compromised. It was enough to put us in danger."
I frown, trying to make sense of it all. "But I thought Tommaso didn't want to be a rat. Why would he do that?"
Enzo sighs. "I think... I think he thought he was helping me. Trying to keep me from throwing my life away. But he doesn't understand."
"Maybe he's not as loyal as you thought," I suggest gently.
Enzo nods, but doesn't say anything else. I can tell the betrayal is weighing on him, so I let the subject drop.
We continue north, leaving the familiar cityscape behind. We take I-95 to Knight's Road, then Roosevelt Boulevard. Eventually, Enzo pulls into the parking lot of a seedy motel called the Neshaminy Inn.
I've never stayed in a place like this before, but I immediately recognize it for what it is - a hangout for prostitutes and criminals. As we enter the dingy room, it really hits me. This is who we are now. Fugitives. Criminals.
I wonder if this is how my father felt when he first got involved with the mob. Did he have this same mix of excitement and fear? Is there some part of me that's always been drawn to this life, even if I didn't know it?
Enzo methodically checks every inch of the room, making sure we're safe. When he's satisfied, he flops down on the bed next to me.
"So what now?" I ask, propping myself up on one elbow.
"Now," Enzo says, "we wait."
I groan in frustration. "I'm tired of waiting. That's all I've done for days."
Enzo turns to face me, a mischievous glint in his eye. "I could think of a way to pass the time," he says, leaning in to kiss my neck. "How about I eat that sweet pussy of yours until you forget all about our problems?"
I giggle as his stubble tickles my skin. "That's your solution to everything, isn't it?"
"Can you blame me?" Enzo murmurs, his hand sliding up my thigh. "You taste so fucking good."
For a moment, I let myself get lost in the sensation. But then reality comes crashing back. "Enzo," I say, pushing him away gently. "As much as I'd love to let you distract me with mind-blowing orgasms, we need to figure out what we're going to do. We can't just keep running forever."
Enzo grins wickedly. "Who said anything about running? I've got a plan."
I raise an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? And what's that?"
"Simple," he says, his eyes glinting dangerously. "We're going to kill them all."
