Chapter 23 (Aura)
I sit alone in Enzo's apartment, a strange mix of freedom and unease washing over me as I take in my surroundings. After days confined to a single room, the open space feels both liberating and overwhelming. My fingers curl around a warm mug of coffee, savoring its rich aroma and comforting heat. Such a simple pleasure, yet it feels like an unimaginable luxury after the harsh conditions I've endured.
The living room bombards my senses after so much deprivation. Colors seem more vibrant, sounds more intense. It's almost too much to process. Seeking refuge in familiarity, I turn on the television and sink into the plush couch cushions. The mundane chatter of a daytime talk show washes over me, grounding me in a semblance of normalcy.
As I sip my coffee, my thoughts inevitably drift to Enzo. Where is he now? What dangerous or illegal activities is he involved in? Part of me doesn't want to know the details, yet I can't help but worry about him. It's a confusing tangle of emotions - concern for his safety warring with anger over my captivity and gratitude for his protection.
The memory of Ettore's leering face at the door's eyehole makes my skin crawl. His predatory gaze and crude remarks left no doubt about his intentions. Yet strangely, I felt oddly calm in his presence. Perhaps I've grown numb to threats after everything I've been through. Or maybe it's a sort of resigned acceptance of whatever comes next.
What troubles me most is the realization that I was willing to let Ettore have his way with me to protect Enzo's cover. The depth of my loyalty to my captor is unsettling. When did I start caring so much about Enzo's wellbeing? How can I reconcile these feelings with the fact that he was involved in my family's murder?
I'm grateful Enzo didn't allow me to make that sacrifice, but the knowledge that I would have done it lingers. I try to imagine enduring Ettore's abuse, the pain and degradation I narrowly avoided. Nausea rise in my throat, yet a small part of me still feels I would suffer it if necessary to keep Enzo safe. This realization terrifies me.
Enzo's fierce protectiveness fills me with warmth even as I question the wisdom of feeling this way. The way he was ready to hurt Ettore to defend me speaks volumes. Thankfully Giacomo's intervention prevented violence, but Enzo's willingness to risk everything for me is both touching and concerning.
I shake off the unpleasant memories and try to focus on my current comfort. The stark contrast between my previous conditions and now is striking. No more dirty room with just a water bottle, bucket, and lumpy mattress. I have coffee, television, a proper bathroom. It's hard not to feel grateful, even knowing the circumstances.
My eyes drift to the front door. I could simply walk out if I chose to. Nothing is physically stopping me from leaving. So why don't I? I stare at the door, contemplating my options. The truth is, I want to stay. For Enzo. To see where this leads. The realization should probably frighten me more than it does.
Settling back on the couch, I lose myself in mindless TV. At some point I must doze off, because I'm startled awake by a sudden knock at the door. Disoriented, I stand quickly, heart racing. What should I do? Enzo told me to go into a room and lock the door if anyone came, but I can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I creep cautiously toward the door, moving as silently as possible.
Peering through the peephole, I see an elderly Italian man outside. Before I can decide what to do, he speaks.
"You're not Enzo, are you?" His voice is gruff but not unkind.
I freeze, horrified at being detected despite my caution. The old man chuckles.
"I know you're in there. Enzo would've opened up by now. He was never any good at being sneaky. Don't worry, I won't rat you out."
I remain motionless, torn between wariness of this stranger and curiosity about his apparent knowledge of Enzo. He seems harmless enough, but appearances can be deceiving. For all I know, he could have armed accomplices waiting to ambush me.
The old man continues talking, seemingly unbothered by my silence. "Look, I'm retired. I don't give a shit what you two are up to. But I know you're standing there listening, so you might as well say something."
I wish he would leave. His voice carries, and I worry about drawing attention from the neighbors. Are they involved with the mafia too, or just ordinary people? The uncertainty gnaws at me.
After a moment's hesitation, I decide I need to engage before his talking attracts unwanted notice. "Who are you?" I ask cautiously.
"Name's Tommaso," he replies easily.
The name sparks recognition. Enzo mentioned a Tommaso in some of his stories about his early days in the mob. "You know Enzo?"
Tommaso chuckles. "Know him? I practically raised the kid."
I weigh my options. Do I trust this man or hope he goes away? Despite his reputation as a former mafia boss, the fact that he's retired and apparently trusted by Enzo sways me. Taking a deep breath, I unlock the door and open it a crack.
Tommaso raises his hands disarmingly. "Easy there, sweetheart. I come in peace."
Slowly, I open the door wider. "Come in," I say, stepping back to let him enter.
Tommaso smiles and walks past me toward the kitchen. I quickly shut and lock the door behind him before joining him at the table.
