Chapter 22 (Enzo)

Once he's gone, I brace my hands on the kitchen counter and take several deep breaths. That was too close. If Giacomo hadn't called when he did, I would have had to hurt Ettore to stop him. Which would have blown this whole operation.

I got lucky. Ettore was hungover and sluggish, focused on Aura instead of noticing how close I was to snapping his neck. And Giacomo's timely call prevented an inevitable confrontation.

But I know I majorly compromised things by letting Aura sleep in my bed and shower. I wanted to give her a taste of normal human dignity. Now I have to figure out how to salvage this mess.

Walking down the hall, I open Aura's door. She looks up at me anxiously.

"Is he gone?" she asks immediately.

I nod, and she runs to me, wrapping her arms around my waist. I hug her tightly, feeling some of the tension drain from my body.

"It's okay," I murmur. "I meant what I said. I won't let anyone hurt you."

I kiss her softly. "I keep my promises."

"I know," she whispers.

Reluctantly, I pull away. "I have to go. There's a job I need to handle with Giacomo. You can have free range of the house, but keep these clothes nearby in case someone checks on you, okay?"

Aura nods. "Okay. Be careful."

I kiss her again, then head to the kitchen to gather my things. Slipping my gun into my waistband, I grab my keys and pause at the door.

"Don't go anywhere," I remind her.

She gives me a wry smile. "Where would I go?"

I grin. "Fair point. I'll be back soon."

As I leave the apartment, I'm struck by the certainty that Aura will be there waiting for me when I return. The intensity of our connection is overwhelming. I know without a doubt that if I told her to kneel and wait for me, she would do it without hesitation.

That knowledge fortifies me as I head out to face whatever the day brings. With Aura by my side - or waiting faithfully for my return - I feel like I can handle anything.

I make my way to the meeting spot, pushing thoughts of Aura aside to focus on the job at hand. The usual crew is there - Ettore, Tommy, and a few other guys I've worked with before. Giacomo arrives last, getting straight down to business.

"Alright, listen up," he says gruffly. "We've got a shipment coming in tonight. High-end electronics. Should be an easy job, but security will be tight. Here's how it's gonna go down..."

I listen carefully as Giacomo outlines the plan. It's a fairly straightforward heist - we'll intercept the truck en route, overpower the drivers, and make off with the goods. My role is to handle any security personnel that might show up.

As Giacomo talks, I can't help but think about how different my life has become in just a few short days. A week ago, this kind of job was my whole world. Now it feels almost trivial compared to keeping Aura safe and figuring out our escape plan.

But I know I can't let my focus slip. One wrong move and everything could come crashing down. I force myself to give Giacomo my full attention, asking questions about timing and contingencies.

When the meeting wraps up, Ettore sidles over to me. "Ready for some action, partner?" he says with a grin. "Maybe afterwards we can celebrate. I know a place with some real eager girls, if you know what I mean."

I clench my jaw, fighting the urge to tell him exactly what I think of his "eager girls." Instead, I just shake my head. "Not interested. I've got other plans."

Ettore's grin widens. "Ah, gonna spend some quality time with your little pet, huh? Can't say I blame you."

Before I can respond, Giacomo calls us over for some final instructions. I'm grateful for the interruption - I'm not sure how much longer I can keep my cool around Ettore.

As we disperse to get ready for tonight, my mind drifts back to Aura. I wonder what she's doing right now. Is she exploring the apartment? Reading? Or just waiting anxiously for my return?

I shake my head, trying to clear it. I can't afford to be distracted right now. But I can't deny the pull I feel towards her, the need to get back and make sure she's safe.

For now, though, I have a job to do. I head home to gear up, steeling myself for the night ahead. Whatever happens, I have to stay focused. Too much is riding on this - not just the heist itself, but my entire future with Aura.

As I walk, I find myself hoping that this will be one of my last jobs for the Family. The thought surprises me - I've never seriously considered leaving before. But now, with Aura in the picture, I'm starting to see a different future for myself.

I reach my apartment building and take the stairs two at a time. As I unlock the door, I'm hit with a wave of anxiety. What if something happened while I was gone? What if Giacomo sent someone else to check on Aura?

But when I step inside, everything is quiet and undisturbed. I call out softly, "Aura?"

She appears in the hallway, looking relieved to see me. "You're back," she says, coming over to hug me.

I wrap my arms around her, breathing in her scent. For a moment, I let myself relax into her embrace. But then reality crashes back in.

"I can't stay long," I tell her reluctantly. "I've got to get ready for this job."

Aura pulls back, concern etched on her face. "Is it dangerous?"

I shrug, not wanting to worry her. "No more than usual. Should be a pretty straightforward heist."

Her eyes widen. "A heist? Like robbing someplace?"

"Something like that," I say vaguely. "Don't worry about it. I'll be fine."

I move past her to the bedroom, where I keep my gear. As I'm strapping on my kevlar vest, I feel Aura's presence in the doorway.

"I don't like this," she says softly.

I turn to look at her. "I know. But it's what I do. It's who I am."

She shakes her head. "It doesn't have to be. We could leave, start over somewhere new."

For a moment, I let myself imagine it. A normal life, away from all this violence and crime. But then I remember the reality of our situation.

"It's not that simple," I tell her. "The Family doesn't just let people walk away. And even if we did manage to escape, we'd always be looking over our shoulders."

Aura steps closer, placing a hand on my arm. "But wouldn't it be worth it? To be free?"

I look into her eyes, seeing the hope there. It would be so easy to give in, to promise her everything she wants. But I can't lie to her.

"Maybe someday," I say instead. "But right now, we need to focus on surviving. And that means playing along with Giacomo's plans for a while longer."

She nods, disappointment clear on her face. I hate seeing her like this, but I know it's necessary. We can't afford to let our guard down, not even for a moment.

I finish gearing up in silence. As I'm about to leave, Aura grabs my hand.

"Be careful," she says urgently. "Please."

I pull her close, kissing her deeply. When we break apart, I rest my forehead against hers.

"I will," I promise. "And I'll be back before you know it."

With one last look at her, I force myself to walk out the door. The job awaits, and I can't afford any distractions.

I meet up with the crew at the designated spot. Everyone's tense, focused on the task ahead. Giacomo goes over the plan one last time, emphasizing the importance of speed and precision.

"In and out," he says firmly. "No unnecessary risks. Got it?"

We all nod. As we pile into the van, I find myself next to Ettore. He grins at me, clearly excited for the action ahead.

"Ready to raise some hell, partner?" he asks.

I grunt noncommittally, not in the mood for his enthusiasm. My mind is split between focusing on the job and worrying about Aura back at the apartment.

The drive to the interception point is tense and quiet. I run through the plan in my head, visualizing each step. When we arrive, Giacomo gives the signal and we all take our positions.

Time seems to slow down as we wait for the truck. I'm hyper-aware of every sound, every movement. When headlights finally appear in the distance, adrenaline surges through me.

"Get ready," Giacomo's voice crackles over the radio.

I tighten my grip on my weapon, taking a deep breath. This is it. No matter what happens next, I know my life will never be the same after tonight.

The truck approaches, and chaos erupts. We spring into action, executing the plan with practiced precision. I move to neutralize the security team, my body operating on autopilot.

In the midst of the mayhem, a stray thought crosses my mind - what would Aura think if she could see me now? Would she be horrified by the violence? Or impressed by my skill?

I push the thought away, refocusing on the task at hand. There's no room for distractions here.

As we finish loading the stolen goods into our van, I hear sirens in the distance. Giacomo barks orders, and we scramble to clear out before the cops arrive.

The getaway is tense, but we manage to lose any pursuit. As we pull into the safe house, I feel the familiar rush of a successful job. But it's tempered by a new feeling - a sense of unease, of not quite belonging anymore.

Giacomo is all smiles as we unload the haul. "Good work, boys," he says, clapping me on the shoulder. "This should keep the bosses happy for a while."

I nod, forcing a smile. But inside, I'm already planning my next move. How long can I keep up this charade? How many more jobs before I can safely get Aura and myself out?

As the crew celebrates, I find myself hanging back. The usual camaraderie feels hollow now. All I want is to get back to Aura, to hold her and forget about this world for a while.

Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Giacomo gives us the all-clear to leave. I waste no time heading out, brushing off invitations to go drinking.

The drive back to my apartment seems to take forever. My mind races with thoughts of Aura - is she safe? Has anyone else come to check on her? What if she decided to run while I was gone?
