CHAPTER 43: A Quiet Place to Breathe
CHAPTER 43: A Quiet Place to Breathe
The restaurant Luca brought her to was nothing like what Isabella had imagined it was going to be.
There were no excessive blinding chandeliers littered with diamonds, no valet line filled with luxury cars competing for attention, and certainly no deafening music or unnecessary displays of wealth meant to intimidate or impress. Instead, the car slowed along a calm street that was neatly tucked away from the restless heart of the city, where trees lined the sidewalks and the annoying noise of traffic could barely be heard.
When the vehicle finally came to a stop, Isabella frowned as she looked out the window.
“This is it?” she asked coolly.
Luca followed her gaze, then nodded with a small smile. “This is it.”
The restaurant was modest but elegant…warm lights shone behind wide glass windows, and white curtains fluttered gently in the evening breeze. There was a neat wooden sign bearing the simple name of the establishment, and she noticed that there were no guards stationed outside, or security detail hovering in the shadows.
It made her a little uneasy, and came out of the car hesitantly, surveying the surroundings with a careful, almost instinctive wariness. Years of surviving dangerous men had trained her to notice exits, blind spots, and threats. But this place felt…calm. Disarmingly calm.
“This doesn’t look like your style,” she said as Luca rounded the car and offered her his arm.
He looked at her with amusement in his eyes. “And what exactly do you think my style is?”
“Loud,” she replied immediately. “Expensive and designed to remind everyone of who you are and how much authority you command.”
He chuckled at her honest assessment of what she thought about him.
“You might be surprised, Bella.”
She hesitated, then slipped her hand into his arm, instantly noticing the way his warmth made her skin tingle with excitement, arousing and irritating her all at once.
The atmosphere inside was equally surprising. The lighting was low but intimate, and the walls were decorated with understated artwork and shelves of old wine bottles. A soft instrumental music was playing in the background…not too loud, but present enough to soothe the soul. Even the tables were spaced generously apart from each other, granting privacy without obvious isolation.
Isabella slowed down her steps without meaning to. She had braced herself for irritation, for another display of arrogance that she could tear apart piece by piece. Instead, she felt clueless and unprepared.
A woman behind the host stand looked up…and smiled.
“Good evening, Luca.”
The familiarity in her tone made Isabella bristle with surprising jealousy, but she hid it behind a look of nonchalance.
Luca returned the smile easily. “Good evening, Sofia.”
“It’s nice to see you,” the woman said warmly, then paused as her eyes drifted toward Isabella. Something stirred in her expression…surprise, curiosity, and poorly hidden intrigue.
“And this must be…” Sofia let the sentence trail off politely.
“Isabella,” Luca said. “She’s dining with me tonight.”
The emphasis was subtle but unmistakable.
Sofia smiled at Isabella politely. “Of course. Welcome, Isabella.”
Isabella nodded curtly, carefully making sure that her expression was neutral and did not give anything away. But her pulse had already picked up. The looks were small and quick…but she noticed them.
From the host. From a waiter passing by. From a woman refilling glasses near the bar who did a double take and nearly missed a step.
They were all looking at her.
No…at them.
They were eventually led to a table tucked into a quiet corner near a window that overlooked a small garden patio. Luca pulled out her chair before she could stop him, and for a split second, she nearly refused out of pure reflex.
Instead, she sat down with a huff.
“Thank you,” she said stiffly.
“You’re welcome,” he replied, just as calmly.
As they settled in, a waiter approached…an older man with kind eyes and an even warmer smile than Sofia the host.
“Good to see you again, Luca,” he said. “It’s been a while.”
“It has,” Luca agreed. “How have you been, Kevin?”
“Still standing,” Kevin chuckled. His eyes went to Isabella, lingered for a moment too long, then returned to Luca with something between amusement and disbelief. “May I bring you your usual?”
Luca shook his head. “Not tonight. We’ll order.”
“Of course.” Kevin handed them menus, then smiled at Isabella. “It’s a pleasure.”
She watched him walk away, and irritation blossomed fiercely in her chest.
The moment they were alone, she leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms slowly.
“So,” she said. “You come here often?”
“Yes.”
“With a lot of women?” she added lightly, tilting her head and giving him a suspicious look. “Because they all seem to know you very well.”
There it was…The attack. Carefully wrapped and deployed.
She expected him to bristle. To scoff. To deflect with arrogance or sarcasm.
He didn’t.
Instead, Luca leaned back, clearly unbothered, and instead regarding her with a thoughtful expression.
“No,” he said simply. “I don’t come here with women.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Then what’s with the special treatment?”
“This place,” he replied evenly, “is where I come when I don’t want to be Don Moretti.”
That reply completely caught her off guard.
“I come here to think. To sit in silence. And to remind myself that the world is bigger than violence and power struggles.” He paused, then added quietly, “The staff are friendly because I treat them like people. And maybe because I tip well also,” he finished with a chuckle.
She stared at him, searching for any sign of mockery or deception.
When she found none, she tried another approach.
“And the looks?”
A slow smile touched his lips…not arrogant or teasing. A smile that was almost…shy.
“They’ve never seen me bring anyone here before.”
Isabella stared at him in disbelief, utterly stunned and speechless.
“This place,” he continued, “is mine alone. Not for the Mafia’s.”
He met her eyes steadily.
“Until tonight.”
For a moment, she forgot how to speak.
She had come prepared to provoke him, to probe and undermine him until he snapped or revealed the monster she believed him to be. Instead, he had disarmed her with quiet honesty.
It unsettled her more than any display of dominance ever could.
The waiter returned to take their order, and Luca let her choose first without comment or pressure. When the waiter left again, Isabella sighed slowly and uncrossed her arms.
She felt something dangerous stir inside her chest.
Emotion.
Confusion.
Doubt.
She had come here armed with resentment and suspicion. She had promised herself she wouldn’t let his charm distract her from the truth…from why she was here, from the blood that still stained her memories.
And yet…
This is his safe space, she thought. And he brought me into it.
She forced herself to straighten, to reclaim control. “Don’t think this means anything,” she said coldly. “I’m only here because I decided not to disregard your invitation without provocation.”
His eyes sparked with amusement. “I’ll take that as progress.”
She rolled her eyes and said nothing.
As their food arrived and the evening unfolded, Isabella found herself doing something she hadn’t expected.
She relaxed.
Just a little.
Enough to listen. Enough to observe. Enough to feel the fragile, dangerous pull of a man who didn’t fit neatly into the role she had assigned to him.
And that realization terrified her more than anything else.
Because for the first time since returning to his world, Isabella Lorenzo wasn’t sure if Luca Moretti was her enemy.
