CHAPTER 172: The Drawing of the Last Battle Lines
CHAPTER 172: The Drawing of the Last Battle Lines
As if the stars themselves were holding their breath, the sky above the moonlight valley shimmered with an odd intensity. Selene stood on the precipice's edge, staring down at the large crowd. The moment weighed heavily on her bones, and her heart thumped in her chest. Under the guise of need, the wolves had united, both comrades and adversaries. There was no amount of training that could prepare them for the impending ultimate fight.
Kael was standing tall behind her, his shadow as long as the night itself. An eerie force, a force that both repulsed and drew, buzzed through his Eclipse-marked body. Unreadable, his eyes locked with hers, yet there was a tension between them that had never been before.
Kael said, his voice just above a whisper, "I never thought it would come to this."
Selene's eyes narrowed as she turned to face him. None of us did. However, there is no other way to rescue everything.
There was a sea of activity in the valley below. Wolves, who had evolved beyond simple animals, were arranged in ranks, each one a ferocious symbol of the tribes from which they sprung. The Moonshadow Clan, the Silverhowls, the Ashfangs, and even those who had vowed allegiance to the ancient gods were among the groups whose flags fluttered in the breeze. All of them were there and prepared to confront the storm. However, the issue persisted there was no assurance that they would live.
The smell of faraway places was carried by a gentle, chilly air that blew through. Selene felt her instincts tingle. There was a problem. Despite their combined energies, she was plagued by a strong sense of disquiet. It was the closest the enemy, whatever they were, had ever been. The presence of something old and merciless was palpable in the air around them.
The tension was broken by Rowan's voice saying, "We're ready, my Alpha." He materialized next to her, his gaze unwavering, his armor shining dimly in the moonlight.
With her eyes fixed on the horizon, Selene murmured, "I know." "However, I'm not positive they are."
Rowan followed her eyes, looking around at the group of wolves below. His mind was etched with the faces of several people, each telling a tale of suffering and survival. They all realized the stakes, however some were excited for this conflict and others were hesitant. The world's existence was at stake in this conflict, not simply the survival of their pack.
Selene had been forewarned of this time by the same heavenly being that had marked her, the one who had tied her destiny to the Moonstone Blade. The evil that had engulfed the realm has only become more potent and cunning. This, however, was her test. She had always had to make decisions, and now that she was on the brink of battle, the decision was obvious: win or lose, the effects would last eternally in both universes.
"Are you not able to sense it as well?" Kael's words interrupted her train of thinking.
Selene gave a nod. Over the previous two days, the weird feeling in her chest had only become worse. The bond with the moon was eroding, sliding like sand between her fingers. She felt as if she was losing control over the Moonstone Blade the more she used it. The power was becoming too strong and unmanageable.
Selene narrowed her eyes and murmured, "That's not the only thing." "I sense the gap. The realm-to-realm barrier is eroding.
Kael's face became serious. "Are you certain?"
She faced him and looked him in the eye. "Kael, I've witnessed it. In the Realm of Astral. It's a thin veil. Too thin.
A distant thunderclap that hadn't originated in the sky reverberated across the valley. Under the ground, something far older than any of them was in motion.
Rowan tensed. "What was that?"
A beat skipped in Selene's heart. Shutting her eyes, she extended her senses. "The Realm of Eclipses. It is tugging at the world's fabric. We are running out of time.
Kael's hands tightened. "After that, we fight. Whatever happens, we're going to finish this tonight.
"But will it turn out the way we expect?" Selene's question was hardly audible above a whisper.
Above them, a person emerged on the slope, its silhouette sharp against the night sky. A solitary man, shrouded in darkness, his presence was obvious. As realization set in, Selene's breath seized in her throat.
The wolf king in exile.
All along, he had been observing them. However, why now? Why appear on the eve of combat?
Rowan's grip tightened around his sword's hilt. "He's present."
Selene held out her hand and cautioned, "Don't engage yet." "What he wants is unknown to us."
With his cloak flapping in the breeze, the figure took a step forward. Selene could feel his presence pressing against the atmosphere as he got closer, his energy strong and unnerving. He had a certain something strange. The fact that he wasn't just any wolf king was what held him together, not the years of exile or the resentment. There was something darker about him.
Selene remarked, "You're still alive," in a calm voice that belied her mounting anxiety.
The wolf king said, his voice silky smooth but with a touch of threat, "I have my reasons." But you're attempting to preserve this world? It's already gone. There will inevitably be an eclipse. No matter how many of your wolves you sacrifice, it will still happen.
Selene squinted her eyes. So why come now? Why come?
The wolf king looked directly into her eyes and replied, "Because I can offer you a choice." "A chance for this to end... your way." No more battles, no more fatalities. Come on over, Selene. We can harness the moon's power if we band together.
With his sword drawn, Rowan took a step forward. "Do you believe we'll accompany you? Considering all you've done?
A wicked, knowing smirk curved the wolf king's lips. "Rowan, you don't get it. You didn't. This goes beyond kingdoms and lineages. It has to do with destiny and power. Whether you're prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice is the true question.
Selene's thoughts whirled. What did he have to offer? Could the Eclipse truly be stopped without destroying all they had worked so hard to achieve? The skepticism was there, yet the notion persisted. She was aware that there had to be an alternative that would not need compromising their core values.
Kael stepped forward, his eyes shining dimly with the Eclipse light, growling, "Get out of our way."
Something older and darker flashed in the wolf king's gaze. "Kael, you'll regret that choice. The Eclipse is unforgiving. I won't either.
The earth underneath them began to quiver, and then it split apart as a black, whirling vortex emerged in the middle of the valley. The smell of decay and the presence of something old filled the air.
They were unaware of the horrors that lay beyond the curtain, even though the battle lines had been formed.
