CHAPTER 170: Selene Brings Old Enemies Together Under a New Flag

CHAPTER 170: Selene Brings Old Enemies Together Under a New Flag

The wolves were surrounded by the ethereal light of the moon, which was a faint silver sliver hanging low in the sky.  Even though the atmosphere was tense, there was an odd silence in the middle of the crowd.  Selene stood in the middle of a wide-open clearing, staring at the varied pack of wolves, each of which was burdened by their own past and suffering.

This day was a reckoning day.  The once divided packs, enmity-filled rivals who had engaged in combat for decades, were now united under Selene's flag.  Many had thought the danger was impossible.  And yet here they were, assembled under the light of the moon that had created them all.

It was believed that the eclipse kid, born during a unique cosmic occurrence, would either permanently unite or split their planet.  Selene's vision of a society where old differences were erased and rivals might become comrades had already won over some.  However, many others continued to doubt her decisions, even those in her own pack.

Selene held out her hand and demanded stillness as the wind howled gently through the woods.  Her dazzling charisma attracted everyone's attention.  Although her physical and mental wounds from the fight were evident, they had grown to be a strength.  She was more than a leader now.  She represented something more.

"Today," Selene said in a strong, authoritative voice, "we stand together as friends, not adversaries.  Old grievances are no longer relevant.  Too much has been lost by all of us to go on this fight.

There was a murmur among the people.  While some people agreed and others continued to be doubtful, Selene sensed a little change in the energy in the air.  She had bled and struggled for this moment, and now she got it.  She needed to convince them.  She needed to show them the wider picture.

With confidence in her voice, Selene went on, "I know the path I ask you to walk is difficult."  "To those who are presently at your sides, some of you have lost family.  Others have seen friends and allies lose their lives in combat.  However, we no longer live in the same world.  We need to work together to shape what lies ahead.

The wolves looked at each other uneasily, their devotion to their packs showing in their postures, some with their fists clenched, others with their bodies stiff.  They weren't politicians; they were fighters.  However, Selene was aware that they would have to do more than just battle to escape the impending storm.  They would have to comprehend.

"The infant born beneath the eclipse..."  As Selene gazed out at the sea of faces in front of her, her voice stumbled a little.  The secret to everything is her.  She is neither our adversary nor a tool to be used.  She holds the key to our world's destiny, and it is our responsibility to lead her.  to keep her safe.

A profound quietness descended over the assembly.  Now the wolves were paying attention.  Their eyes showed it to Selene.  Although the disbelief had lessened, uncertainty persisted like a dense mist.  She needed to make her message clear.

With an unwavering voice, Selene said, "I will not pretend to know what the future holds."  However, I am aware that the world will descend into anarchy if we remain split and keep tearing one another apart.  An important turning point is the eclipse.  The beginning of a new age.  We may either contribute to it or let it ruin us.

There was a long pause when she finished speaking, as the gravity of her statement set in.  The tension in the air was evident, yet the wolves remained still, their faces inscrutable.  This was a plea, not just a political address.  An appeal for survival and solidarity.

The quiet was then broken by a voice from the rear of the throng.

"This is insane," a rough voice said.  Ferin, the head of the Thunderclaw pack, one of the strongest and most illustrious packs in the kingdom, owned it.  His stern comments reverberated over the area, since his pack and Selene's had been at conflict for years.  You request that we put down our weapons and put aside the blood we have shed and the conflicts we have engaged in.  For what purpose?  A kid?  A foretelling?  Selene, do you believe we are idiots?

Selene did not flinch, but her eyes hardened.  This was what she had expected.  Ferin was a difficult guy to influence, and most wolves were afraid to acknowledge the depth of his pride.  She refused to give up, however.

She spoke calmly but with a hint of anger, "I do not ask you to forget the bloodshed, Ferin."  Please keep it in mind so that we don't make the same errors again.  All of us have made too many sacrifices for a future that, if we don't change, is doomed.  This has nothing to do with a prophecy or a kid.  Our world's survival is at stake here.

Ferin came forward, his huge body throwing a broad shadow across the assembly.  "You talk about survival, but you don't know what you're talking about.  The Thunderclaw pack's wolves will never submit to the authority of another.  We battle for power and strength.

Selene fired back, her voice piercing the tension like a sword, "And I fight for peace."  “I fight for a future free from the shadow of war for our children, your children.  This kid and this new period have the potential to either be the disaster we dread or the redemption we need.  We have the option.

Ferin's sharp eyes met hers for a considerable amount of time, as if assessing her words and trying her determination.  Then, with a grumble, he turned away.

"Calm?  With a tone full of contempt, Ferin mumbled, "You talk of peace, but there is no peace in weakness."  "The world will always be the same.  Not until we demonstrate the might of our claws.

Dissatisfied murmurs echoed across the audience as Ferin backed away.  However, Selene saw something fresh in their gaze.  hesitancy.  I doubt it.  She would take advantage of the weakness in their determination.

She glanced over the group again, looking for the one face that would change everything.  There was Kael, standing at the edge of the clearing.  His face was inscrutable, and his intense gaze fixed on her in a way that both unnerved and comforted her.

Through the suffering, the loss, the conflicts, he had always been at her side.  Selene, however, was now burdened by his silent condemnation.  Was he going to support her?  Would he follow the others' lead?

With each stride, Kael's boots crunched the ground as he advanced.  The air was filled with expectancy as the muttering became louder.  With her heart thumping in her chest, Selene held her breath.

Kael didn't say anything at first when he got to her side.  Rather, he remained still, his eyes scanning the council, the assembly of wolves who had been adversaries but were now a part of something greater than themselves.

At last, Kael turned to face Selene.  His voice was calm yet low as he continued, "I stand with you."

The audience let out a collective gasp.  It was the strength of his words as much as their weight.  Kael was a powerful man; his choice to support Selene would determine whether they won or lost.

However, Selene felt a darkness descend over her even as the wolves started to mutter in astonishment.  There was a problem.  A new presence, one that none of them had anticipated, changed the atmosphere and made it heavier.

Then the earth shuddered.

A harsh, primordial roar reverberated across the area.  A figure stepped out of the shadows, causing the trees to tremble and the sky to become darker.

A huge wolf moved forward, its eyes shining with an odd light, its fur as black as the night.  And then it spoke in a voice that made Selene shudder.

The wolf snarled, its voice like thunder, "The child will not save you."  "You will fail because of your unity."

Selene felt her heart freeze.  The strength in that voice was undeniable.

"Who are you?"  Her voice was a whisper, yet furious, as she commanded.

She was chilled to her core by the wolf's twisted, vicious grin.

It said, "I am the first of many."  "The eclipse was just the start.”
