Chapter Nineteen
Chapter Nineteen
Maxon
Ravencrest smells like a pack trying not to panic.
They do a good job of it, but the scent is there if you know what to look for. It hides in tighter patrol patterns, in quieter conversations, in the way warriors glance toward the treeline as if they expect something to step out and announce itself.
Amaris doesn't announce herself anymore. She simply exists, and that seems to bother them more.
It bothers Kenton, too, though he hides it behind discipline and distance. He watches her like a man trying to learn a language he has no words for. He's dangerous in the way he wants without asking, even when he tries not to.
I watch him back.
I also watch her.
Not because she needs a guard dog, but because I know what it looks like when the world decides white fur means opportunity.
I've seen opportunity sharpened into a blade.
We've been here almost two weeks, and the day ends with rain again, fine and cold, and the lodge grows quieter as wolves turn in. Amaris disappears into the hallway that leads to her room, with her shoulders squared, as she refuses to let exhaustion show, even when her hands shake after training.
I wait.
Not lurking in her doorway, or crowding her space, but where she can see me if she looks, because she trusts honesty more than charm.
When she finally steps into the side corridor where fewer wolves pass, she stops and turns to face me.
“You're hovering,” she says, and my mouth tightens.
“I'm standing.”
“You're standing with intent,” she corrects.
She's not wrong. I keep my voice low and say, “I want to talk.”
Her eyes narrow. “Everyone wants to talk.”
“I don't want to talk like they do,” I say. “I want to know if you're all right.”
Her expression flickers, annoyance wrestling with something else. “I'm breathing. That counts.”
“It does,” I agree. “It also isn't the same as being all right.”
Silence stretches between us, filled with the muffled sounds of the lodge settling, footsteps distant, a door closing somewhere down the hall.
Amaris’s gaze drops to my hands, then back to my face. “Why do you care?”
The questions sharp, but it's also honest. She doesn't ask because she wants reassurance. She asks because she refuses to accept unexplained concern.
I answer with the truth I can admit. “Because I know what it looks like when people decide you're something they can take.”
Her jaw tightens. “You tracked me. You found me.”
“I did,” I say. “And I didn't force you.”
Her eyes stay hard. “You still want.”
I let out a slow breath. “Yes.”
The admission sits between us like a match.
Her scent shifts, heat threading through her anger. The wolf under her skin hums, and I feel it the way you feel thunder in your bones before the lightning comes.
She steps closer, close enough that her warmth touches the air around me. “You keep acting like wanting is a sin,” she says.
“It can be,” I answer. “When it turns into a cage.”
Her gaze locks on mine. “Then don't build a cage.”
I hold still, forcing my body to obey my mind. “Tell me what you want,” I say.
Her mouth parts, and for a beat, she looks almost startled, like she didn't expect to be asked so directly.
Then she says it, voice low. “I want you to stop looking at me like you're afraid to touch me.”
I swallow, because she's asking for exactly what I'm terrified to give her. Not because she'll break, but because I might.
“I'll stop if you tell me to stop,” I say.
“I will,” she answers.
The air between us tightens, and I step closer, slowly, and lift my hand toward her face without touching yet, giving her space to recoil. She doesn't recoil. She tilts her head slightly, like she's allowing the approach on her terms.
My fingertips brush her cheek, and heat snaps through me.
Her breath catches, and her eyes darken. The contact feels like stepping into a current that's been waiting for me.
I lean in and kiss her, controlled but hungry.
She kisses back harder, fingers curling into my shirt like she's anchoring herself in the sensation.
My hand slides into her hair, careful, and I keep my grip loose because I refuse to mimic violence even by accident. She tilts her head, deepening the kiss, and the sound she makes is low and frustrated and relieved all at once.
We move, not rushing, but urgently, toward a quieter room off the corridor, a storage space Boone cleared for her training gear. The door shuts, and the sound seals us into a world that's only breath and skin and the way her scent wraps around my control like it wants to snap it.
I press her back against the wall, still gentle, still asking with every movement.
Her hands slide under my shirt, nails scraping lightly over my ribs, and I hiss. She watches my reaction like she's learning my limits.
“Do you want me to stop?” she challenges quietly.
“No,” I answer, voice rough. “I want you closer.”
She presses her body into mine, and the sensation punches air out of me. My wolf surges, demanding more, and I clamp down hard because I won't lose myself and scare her.
My mouth moves to her throat, tasting skin, and she shivers. Her hands grip my shoulders. Her breath turns ragged, and she tilts her head back, exposing more, not submissive, but choosing.
I pause, forcing myself to meet her eyes. “Tell me you're choosing this,” I say.
Her gaze is bright, fierce. “I'm choosing this,” she says. “I'm choosing you.”
The words hit deep, and my control frays in the best and worst ways.
I lift her, hands under her thighs, and she wraps her legs around my hips, pulling me closer like she refuses distance. I carry her to the small table and set her down, then stand between her knees, breathing hard.
Her hands tug at my belt. My hands slide under her shirt, over her stomach, up her ribs, and I feel her tremble. I kiss her again, slower, deeper, and the heat in the room turns thick.
I strip her clothes with care. She strips mine with impatience. The contrast makes something in me soften even as it burns.
When I sink to my knees in front of her, spreading her thighs gently, her fingers tangle in my hair like she's steadying herself. I look up at her, forcing the question out again because it matters.
“Still yes?” I say.
Her voice shakes with anger and need. “Yes.”
I put my mouth on her, and she gasps, head falling back against the wall. Her scent floods the room, sharp and bright, and the wolf under her skin hums louder. I keep my hands firm on her hips, holding her steady, and I take my time, because this isn't a race; it's a choice she deserves to feel fully.
Her fingers grip my hair tighter, and her breath turns into broken sounds. Her body tightens, then trembles, and when she comes, the air seems to flash with pressure, subtle but real, like her pleasure woke something in the space around us.
I feel it too, a surge in my chest that's not only desire.
It's the bond pressure climbing toward something final.
I go still for a beat, breathing hard, because the instinct to push it to completion is loud. My wolf wants to mark her, claim her, make her ours. My body wants to claim it. The old fear in me screams that if I don't make her mine, she will be taken.
I force myself to breathe through the panic.
Completion isn't a safety measure; it's a covenant.
Not here. Not yet. Not until she chooses it with full clarity, not on a night when the pack’s tension fills the air, and the walls feel too thin.
Amaris’s hands slide down to my shoulders, pulling me up. Her eyes are dark, flushed. “Come here,” she says.
I stand, and she kisses me, slow and deep, tasting herself on my mouth. It sends a shock through me that nearly knocks my restraint loose.
She reaches between us, guiding me, and I freeze again, not with fear, but with the knowledge of what one thrust could trigger.
I look into her eyes. “Amaris,” I say, voice rough. “If we do this, I don't know if I can stop it from becoming more.”
She blinks, breath unsteady. “More,” she repeats.
I swallow. “Something that will change you. Something you might not want yet.”
Her gaze sharpens, suspicion returning like armor. “You know something,” she says.
I do, and I can't tell her all of it, not without exposing white truths that get wolves killed.
I choose what I can give her. “I know you and I are pulling toward a line,” I say. “I can feel it. I think you can too.”
Her throat bobs. She doesn't deny it.
I keep my hands on her hips, steady. “We can stop here,” I say. “We can keep it hot without crossing the line until you say you want it.”
Amaris stares at me for a long beat, then nods once, tight and decisive. “Not yet,” she says.
Relief and frustration collide in me.
I kiss her forehead, then her mouth. “Not yet,” I agree.
I kiss her again hard and slip my hand between her thighs, my fingers brushing her opening, testing her reaction. She whimpers and rocks her hips, telling me she wants me inside of her.
That knowledge makes my cock hard. I sink two fingers inside of her slick heat and find her tight, too fucking tight to be anything but a virgin, and suddenly I'm glad that I didn't listen to what my body wanted, because she wouldn't have been ready for me.
I deepen the kiss, relishing in the gift that she's giving me by allowing me to touch her, when she's clearly waited this long. I thrust my fingers gentle and deep, curling them and hitting a spot that makes her gasp.
I keep working that spot as her breathing becomes faster and more labored, and she moans against my mouth, rocking her hips in time with the thrust of my fingers, chasing the release that's just out of reach.
"Come for me," I growl, wanting to feel her come on my fingers more than I want my next breath.
As if her body was just waiting for my order, she lets go with a scream of pleasure as she trembles beneath me.
When I pull my fingers from her, I put them in my mouth, one at a time, savoring the taste of her as she gets her bearings.
She sits up and wraps one hand around my cock, the other diving into my hair as she brings her lips to mine once more, her tongue thrusting into my mouth in time with the stroking of her hand up and down my shaft.
I'm already so close to the edge from making her come twice that it doesn't take much before I'm coming, her hand working every last drop out of me as it lands against my stomach, and when she leans forward, her tongue coming out and licking a line up my stomache and scooping up the liquid slowly sliding down my abs, I nearly lose all restraint.
"Fuck," I growl as I clench my fists to keep myself from shoving her back down and taking what my wolf is urging me to take.
But consent is important, and I don't have it yet.
Not for anything more than what we just did.
When we finally dress, the room smells like sweat and rain and her, and my wolf is restless, pacing behind my ribs.
"Thank you," I tell her, needing her to know that I don't take what just happened between us lightly.
Amaris leans against the table, eyes on me. “You can control yourself,” she says, almost like she is surprised.
“I have to,” I answer.
Her gaze hardens. “Because of your past.”
I don't answer that.
She steps closer anyway, fingers sliding under my jaw, tilting my face up. “Don't make me guess forever,” she says quietly. “If you're scared, tell me why.”
I hold her gaze, and the urge to tell her everything rises like bile.
I swallow it down and choose a smaller truth. “I'm scared because I've seen people hunt what they don't understand,” I say. “And I won't let that happen to you.”
Her expression shifts, something hot and fierce and almost soft. “Then don't,” she says.
It sounds simple when she says it.
It never is.
